  • Inspired by a Ted talk on throat singing I recently made a journey across Russia to the small republic of Tuva to hear the native style of singing called 'Khoomei'. This is the story of that journey.

It was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary back in the 1990s. I saw the movie at the time and a couple years later I was in university studying World Religions. Because of that movie I decided to write my senior thesis on the Tuvan religion. I've wanted to go to Tuva ever since. Great to get a traveler's perspective of it. That "khoomei " singing is really cool .
The school looked in very good condition and the pupils even more so ,a hub of activity .
If that is the standard in TUVA , they must have a very high standard right throughout Russia .
The education and schooling is excellent in a Soviet built town ,the Public buildings, monuments and areas look huge , the whole of Russia looks never ending ,it goes on forever.
Those idiots Napoleon and Hitler who thought they could conquer the place had no idea how big the place was , serve them right, the brave Russian people put them back in their box and saved humanity imo .
Good to see the young people maintaining their cultural traditions and enjoying them ,not being discouraged by modernity and the state ,so friendly the people , what an interesting and enjoyable invitation to a part of the world most of us in the West didn't even know existed , thank you for the information and showing us your experience , all strength and safety to you .

Yes the school was as good as what we have back home. The headmaster however said that half his budget is stolen by the education department in the capitol ( Kyzyl ) sl it should be even better. They even had a students therapy room for the few disabled kids and a psychology office to help kids cope with issues, and this is the poorest region of Russia so must be even better elsewhere. I was very impressed by the facilities and dedication of the teachers. Yes it's great that they still preserve their traditions. People wear local clothes and speak Tuvan among themselves. They are incredibly proud and there is a desire for some form of independence but that seems highly unlikely. Glad you found it interesting, I certainly had a great time there.

I am addicted to these videos! To see a refreshing change from our western lifestyles and see the roots of life in a sense. I feel like I’ve been in a damn box after watching most of the videos, realizing how diverse the world is and how much I have yet to see with my own eyes. Thank you Mr Bald!

I love this. I hope to go one day myself. I have a deep interest in the cultures of both Mongolia and Tuva (and their differences too), and have a love and appreciation for their music, heck I'm learning Khoomei myself and to play Morin Khuur and intend to get an Igil eventually. It's cool you got your own private concert. The guy teaching me to sing lived in Tuva until 2 months ago.
But I was surprised to learn that Russia's most dangerous city was in Tuva. However, I generally believe most people don't tend to want to do harm and are the opposite. Whilst I don't doubt there is truth to these reputations, the reality of place might not be as dire or you may not find yourself in the circumstances where it gets its bad rep.

Mr. Bald, I simply can't help but love the videos I'm watching from both of your channels and this one is especially one of the most inspiring ones. You show people's native hospitality in the best possible ways. You always manage to make a nice path from rumors to reality. The world needs more travellers of your kind. You might bring the world a bit closer to each other. The voice perhaps unheard by many, yet when it is heard, it inspires. Returns the faith in humanity. The world needs more Balds and the Tuvan hospitality. This video, I believe, should be a lesson to the entire planet. If I ever stumbled upon you at the land of the southern slavs, you'd deserve the best treatment.
However, I wish you best luck and lots of great people wherever you're still planning to go. Thank you for sharing all the experience. It's just priceless.

@@Danny-vl2ym he's trolling. you can literally get a train ticket for the next day and travel from Moscow to Vladivostok for a fairly cheap price. (cheap in a sense that it'll be afordable even for the average russian loans).
My experience: train Moscow-Arkhangelsk, my station is called Nyandoma, around 1000km trip, ca. 12 hours, cheapest berth ticket for 1200 rubles = less than 20$ (and if you book in time you could get it even cheaper). So yes you can travel anywhere you want in russia, if you only wanted to!

I've been in most of those places on vacation trips over the years. I live in Krasnoyarsk, that is basically 1 day bus ride from them. There are lots of lakes in south siberia for camping and mountain ranges for hiking. Sayany and Altay are probably among the best places for hiking of all. You can find there green lakes with marbel covering the bottom and all other interesting places. But damn it's fuken cold there at night in July. In the morning there is frost istead of dew.
