    I am a Bootuber from Germany, a friend recommended your channel and I am so happy that I discovered you. What a great channel, I love your style, your sophisticated book taste and your substantial speech without bla bla bla.. I love it. Please keep going like this. You have a fan in Germany 🤓

    Really lovely to hear your reaction to the list and plans for future reading. I also just finished reading Shuggie Bain recently and loved it. Such a moving story. I was more positive on Reid's novel than you were but I get that the big coincidence in the story made the plot feel more controlled. Excited to hear what you think of Ward's novel - I think you'll love it. 😄📚

      Ohhh so glad to hear that you enjoyed Shuggie Bain, Eric! I thought you would😊 I'm very excited to read Love and Other Thought Experiments - will be picking it up soon! Thanks for watching, Eric x

    Interesting thoughts on the long list. Apeirogon is utterly utterly AMAZING. The writing is shocking, beautiful and unforgettable. It is going to be up there with my favourites ever. Regarding the own voices issue...I would say that this book is about humanity..it is so so rare to get a writer who can change minds, open minds and leave the reader a different person almost. I will never regret reading it and because McCann worked with the protagonists in the story and has written so well...I think he is qualified in every respect, I know you will love it. Sorry to run on...just a little Apeirogon support.

      I'm with you on this one. Don't really get the blinkered 'own voices' approach myself - much prefer to judge a book on it's individual merits and Apeirogon has plenty of merits, that's for sure. It is going to be near the top of my favourites list for this year, without a doubt.

      Great to hear that you loved Apeirogon so much! I'm interested to see how I feel about it if I pick it up ☺️

    I've been reading through the Longlist and I absolutely loved Burnt Sugar! I'm glad you're excited about it :)
    Also, I wanted to say about Apeirogon, that it is based off of 2 real mean who gave McCann the okay to write their story and collaborated with him. In this specific instance, I feel like it's okay, mostly because it would be tough for a book like this to be written from one side or the other since it is such a divisive situation, so having the outsider's perspective is I think a good thing to keep it unbiased. (Obviously the ideal choice would have been an author from each country cowriting it, but I think this is a good second option).
    McCann is still a tough one to talk about right now though, as he does have some allegations against him. I'm on the side of innocent till proven guilty, but I also think it's good to be aware of those things. I didn't know until after I filmed my initial thoughts about the list and wish I had haha

    I was also a philosophy major and just finished Love and Other Thought Experiments. I was mesmerized and even puzzled by a few sections. Loved this book for its daring and imagination.The section called Zeus is where I was a bit puzzled. Would appreciate your insight if you have read the book.

    the booker prize isn't usually something i'm super into although i love the commentary always! but there are definitely reservations i have with it as you mentioned. there are definitely quite a few i'm interested in this year; i'm currently reading Such A Fun Age, and i'm interested in reading Shuggie Bain, The Shadow King and How These Hills Are Made of Gold (I just got a proof of this through work!). Super interested to hear your thoughts on some of these and what the shortlist will be!

    I’m more of a Women’s Prize girl, I think. I’m really hoping that Hamnet takes that prize. As far as the Booker list, I’ve read How Much of These Hills is Gold and absolutely loved it. It’s my #2 favorite so far this year behind Hamnet. I just ordered Burnt Sugar last night after seeing the review done by KDBooks on his channel. Had to order that edition for the cover and now those amazing endpapers! 😍 I will definitely be reading Maaza Mengiste’s book too, but I think that’s about all. Shuggie Bain sounds like a sure contender but doesn’t really interest me. Great video!

    After the bullshit of last year surely they won’t just chuck the award at Mantel again. The longlist has so much innovation, would love to see a slightly left-field win. I am concerned on the judges’ part that Mantel, like Atwood (adore Atwood btw) is ‘too big a name’ not to win.
    Edit: btw bought Real Life, Love and Other Thought Experiments and Redhead at the Side of the Road off your vid 😊

      I feel you. If the book is as brilliant as everyone says, then it may deserve to win - but it does make the whole process a little less fun, knowing it's coming! So glad you liked the sound of a few of the books! Happy reading💞

      It was enjoyable, just didn't feel the best executed up to the end for me! Most people don't seem to have read much of this list tbh😅

      @itsflowerside Před 4 lety

      i also didn’t like Such a Fun Age at all, in fact in DNF’d it at around 25% in. The beginning is strong but then it absolutely diverses into an extremely boring narrative. I understand what the themes were supposed to be but they were just not executed very well and i’m really shocked to see this book on everyone’s lists at the moment.

    Is there an anywhere near major national or international book prize that doesn't have issues or controversy? And anything that is judged that involves $$, fame & prestige opens the door to politics and sometimes to darker stuff.

    • @JasmineReads
      @JasmineReads  Před 3 lety

      It's an annual literary book prize which seeks to find the 'finest fiction' book published in the past 12 months - the books have to be written in English and published in the UK or Ireland 😊

    I’ve heard some comments about Colum McCann being sexual abusive, so I definitely won’t read his book. I always like to see the Booker’s list, but I’m also a bit disappointed!

    • @tumblyhomecarolinep7121
      @tumblyhomecarolinep7121 Před 4 lety +2

      goodbyefrida I don’t know about this or if this is a matter that has been investigated with all concerned allowed to speak up. But the book is worth a read because it is about conflict and how we need to talk...it also made me see the situation in that part of the world so much more clearly. I just felt I understood more. That is something I a grateful for. Every single page is breathtaking. I think reading, even if it is by authors we don’t align with, (maybe especially) is always a good thing..

    I completely agree that it is an utter crime that Hamnet isn't on the list, and while I do think quite positively of Such A Fun Age for its exploration of less overt, insidious forms of racism as a Black American woman, I don't think that it is Booker material, exactly. The writing, while it had its strengths, just wasn't quiiiite there for me. Like you, I have a degree in philosophy, so Love and Other Thought Experiments is my most anticipated book on this list and I think I should be delivered tomorrow so I can tuck into it!

    • @JasmineReads

    Crazy, anyone can write about whatever they want to write about. It's fiction. Stop with this made up BS. It's boring.
