  • On the 24th of June 2024, just south of Sines in Portugal, we experienced a fierce interaction with a huge orca.
    The rudders have been damaged. We will have the yacht hauled out and make the necessary repairs to continue the journey.

    Yikes. One note. I don't know where the orcas were when you were reaching between the wheel spokes to interact with the screen, but I suspect your arm was in serious danger if an orca had grabbed the rudder at that moment.

      They made almost everything wrong and I can’t really see the attack here. I have seen videos where the wheel has been shaken and turned completely around so this was more a small interaction and nothing scary.

      @@chrisdickinson1762 believe me, I’ve been in more dangerous situations than you are though. I dived with sharks of all kind and I got my own interaction with the orca pod there as well, I just don’t like to pull it onto CZcams because humans are getting mad with the orcas already, no need for that. If orcas want to sink a boat they easily do. I’m pretty sure that even a Garcia won’t be standing the punctual force when an orca decides to throw itself onto a deck but for sure no glass fibre hull will stand this force. And that is what orcas do with whales. And a 6 ton orca nibbling on your rudder will definitely destroy the rudder or even more.
      So I’m thankful for your comment but I know how it feels to be on the helm and crossing even an ocean. I’m not just a keyboard warrior

      If you feel that the safety of your vessel and therefore your life is in danger, then you have a right to take whatever action is necessary to deter the Orcas. Orcas, although a protected species, are not protected from a threat to human life. It’s simply a matter of self defence.

    The Orcas are not attacking, from their perspective they are plying with the funny thing that points down under hull. It's so boring swimming around in the ocean.

    I think that last week a sailing boat sank after encountering orcas, it all started during the first wave of COVID, the corpse of an adult orca with deep cuts washed up on the Portuguese coast, the orcas don't know their way "home" and go up and down the coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Before COVID there were no orcas there!

    • @AbNomal621
      @AbNomal621 Před měsícem +2

      What is your source for anything stated? First, the orcas have been in that region for a very long time. And while I have followed the situation for so,e time this is the first time I have EVER heard of the supposed dead orca. And if you take ten minutes of research you can find that the behavior started with no damage to boats. And that these are equivalent of a pack of teens.

      @@AbNomal621 Firstly, I'm Portuguese, so if there were orcas in Portugal a long time ago, I'd know about it! The dead adult orca washed ashore near Viana do Castelo... By the way, they're dwarf orcas, not the famous killer whales! Inform yourself first before writing rubbish.

    Its worrying if this behaviour spreads to different pods.
    We've heard people being told to turn off electrics, I wonder who is collecting data on whether boats being attacked had auto pilots or depth sounders running, something that might be causing annoyance under the water or is it as simple as the orca getting bored?

    • @cornelisvanderbent8569
      @cornelisvanderbent8569 Před měsícem +1

      Depth sounders make sounds in the audible spectrum, at the least a clicking sound when switching frequency. Heard a guy in a recent Raymarine video say this. Had to immediately think this might be reason for the attacks. Attacks could have gotten worse because of the immense acoustic pollution caused by ramming in these ridiculous windmill pipes in the seabed; these sounds above water can be heard up to 20 or 30 miles. Now imagine the energy levels in the water! Remember that whale species can communicate over very large distances, so they will for sure hear these nature destroying/disturbing sounds for so called 'helping Earth' from very far away.
