Amy Shira Teitel is a historian and journalist who made a name for herself as a blogger and CZcams creator focusing on mid 20th-century history, specifically the space race with her CZcams channel, Vintage Space. But her interests go well beyond rockets and moon landings (she can read ancient Greek, which is insane). Today we talk about the frustrations of being an online creator, the dangers of being pigeonholed, and the amazing past and future of space travel. Her newest book, Fighting For Space is available in bookstores and online.

I have a love hate relationship with the algorithm, but I found these channels by clicking on the channels tabs of presenters who are really good at what they do:
(All these channels have produced content about space)
      - (Audience Q&A) Fraiser Cain
      - (Niches) John Micheal Godier (and his second channel Event Horizon)
      - (Future) Issac Arthur
      - (History) Amy's channel (then called Vintage Space)
      - (Cosmology/Astrophysics) PBS Spacetime
      - (Cosmology/Astrophysics) Paul M Sutter
      - (Physics) Sabbine Hossenfelder
      - (Physics) Fermilab
      - (Engineering) Curious Droid
      - (Wildcard/Trivia) Joe Scott

It makes you wonder how many other channels are out there for you to binge watch the whole catalog, but you just don't know about it yet. I average about one channel a month, discovering and binging almost everything, then being forced to wait a week for the next bite like every other subscriber.

I always admired your poise and ability to communicate subjects about the space program. I often try and think of "space" questions which haven't been asked yet (I get so tired of the toilet inquiries).
If I was before several Astronauts who were onstage taking questions, I would bring up a couple. 1."Claustrophobia, where are you on the subject and why do Astronauts appear unaffected by it?"
    2. When an Astronaut dies, I would expect the Space Medicine crowd would naturally have their minds on an autopsy, especially if the person walked on the Moon. But that's not my question. I wonder what kind of mechanism does NASA employ if, say, an Astronaut dies unexpectedly somewhere in the United States, do they send a specific team to secure the remains? Just wondering... Again, you have a lot to be proud of... don't let the bastards get you down. Go slow. Oh, and like I always say, "The Crew of Apollo 13 proved Survival is the BEST Success"
    P. S. Deke Slayton sent me a typewritten letter in response to one of my inquiries. He explained he had grown a "thick skin" in dealing with negative People.

I watched some of Amy's videos a few years ago and found them interesting. Her separate interests in 1) vintage stuff and 2) space exploration is an unusual combination. But there's an inevitable tension between the two since space exploration continues to develop and do new things, which by definition aren't "vintage" (yet!). The newer a space exploration mission is, the less Amy seems to like it. It's odd to find someone so passionate about vintage space and so dismissive about current space exploration.

I've followed Amy and Vintage Space since about 2014 and I was really surprised and disappointed at how other long term viewer took her change in direction. I don't actually see how it was much of a change at all. I can't think of a more logical direction for a channel focused on the Apollo era to spread horizontally into content about the many other big technology projects going on in the US at the time alongside a wave of social, economic and political upheavals both in the US and globally. I thought the spy plane series was a great way to start down that path. Some of the complaints were frankly ridiculous. People were literally mad at her for taking time away from YT to write. You know, like what you do when you have a contract with a publisher.

Love the new show! I only found myself disagreeing with Amy on the moon thing for the main reason being a push in the innovation needed for all future deep space travel. Especially testing regolith with 3d printers, sending autonomous robots for testing. But yea no cold War so to speak but...there is still a space race, just a commercial one. For her question, why are we so fixated about putting people on Mars. With it's low gravity well (and currently thin atmosphere) it's the perfect place for other launches to the rest of the solar system and beyond. (Mining the asteroid belt for example)(The Expanse, anyone?)

  • @dustyWayneJr
    @dustyWayneJr Před 2 lety

IMO, we need get back to the Moon & the need to build more Space Stations is because, we have not solved the Planetary Collision Event issue that plagues all "advanced" civilizations.
Example: We do not know how plate tectonics got started because, IMO, Geophysicists do not learn more about Active-phase Comets, or when they transition to Impact-phase Comets. Also, the subject of Plasma Physics would help.
And, speaking on the Apollo program, Neil Armstrong became obsessed (look it up) with learning about Indigenous history for the Americas, after, he returned from his Moon trip. Why? And, he refused to discuss both topics beyond standard PR.
If you want a challenge to present an 80 year plan for Space exploration/expansion and to have the United States leading in this field, is for the President to enact a new three(3) Space Stations project, built within 10 years after 2025. This includes additional launch facilities here on Earth. Because ALL government programs are factually "jobs" programs.
Furthermore, comet impacts have smashed Earth before, cracked plates, relocated megatons of crust & vaporized as much. Impact-phase comets are Mother Nature's erase/reset civilizations button.

At 20:00 ish, regarding comments feedback.
Wouldn't it be great if platforms has a community feature the creators had full control over. Where these supportive fans could self organize moderation features to the point the entire task could be offloaded from the creators. Then comments could be flagged by the supporters who care and may have the time to improve the feedback, especially for the creators sanity...
Comment: "bangs suck" (hide demotion: from commenter, so they don't know they were blocked and thus explode more.
Comment: Got 4k "are you sick", (Flag: health comment. And choose the one most empathetic).
Comment: "What about ___", (Flag: Off Topic Critical), doesn't contribute to the theme.
Comment: "Your great, good show." (Flag: generic praise).
Comment: "Some interesting question or expansion to the topic" (Flag: star as good for feedback).
Then the creators can just ignore comments that suck as curated by their chosen fan bases who want to help. And they could pick to "like" all praise, and can look at and maybe respond to the stars.
I feel your pain though don't experience it myself.

It's a fine line between filtering out toxicity and creating an echo chamber. I agree comments like "I hate your hair" are useless and shouldn't happen, but if you have fans that are filtering comments, there is the possibility that any criticism will get deleted or blocked, turning it into an echo chamber run by a bunch of sycophants.

It is great to be pigeon holed, and also not so much. Its why FOX NEWS or MSNBC stick with only a certain slant. Once you have your audience curated, do not mess with it. The last thing a curated audience wants is something new from you. They want to see variations on the same subject matter over and over again. It also helps the advertiser since they too want to know exactly the demographic you curate. I know CZcams is a bit different than TV, but the bottom line is the same. For a content creator to branch out for their own satisfaction, it is going to be not fun since their audience expects certain things done in a certain way. You can opt to abandon them, but then you have to accept curating a new audience.

AST is being a little presumptuous with the "expert" commenters commenting on educational CZcams.
There aren't many experts who click on a video just to display their intellectual superiority over the creator. Most experts want to watch a video because to complete their knowledge on a subject, to fill in the gaps in their understanding, to find simpler ways of explaining its more complicated portions, or even to listen to a fresh perspective.
The most common case of comments is the one where the viewer knows A, B, C, D about a subject, the video discusses C, D, E, F on the subject, and the comment wants to talk about A & B. In this case, nobody can claim intellectual superiority over the other. In fact, the commenter is grateful that they have learned E & F about the subject (which they never knew before). They're certainly not mad that you dropped A & B out of the video. How much better would things be if we all knew A, B, C, D, E and F about a subject?
That is what the "expert" is trying to get across.
You can choose to take on their comment with wisdom, which means thanking them for the comment. Now that you have more information about a subject, use it to refine your understanding of the content and post a follow-up video expanding on the new parts.
Or you can take the egotist's approach, where you dismiss the comment with scorn, call the commenter a loser, sometimes include a hate-based comment based on stereotype, have them shadowbanned, and wonder why you're losing viewers on your channel / followers on social media.
This applies to both the commenter and the creator.

The subject of going to Mars in the ensuing conversation is flawed perspective imo. For two people with above average history and space knowledge they seem to not understand the repercussions of not doing aggressive space exploration or the repercussions of delaying it in any way. It's like they don't know or care what the implications are in putting off the inevitable. Like there is no additional risk or cost for not progressing sooner rather than later. I attribute the lady's lack of insight into not living long enough to have learned by experience and wisdom, just by books and other people's biased agendas. I'm not sure what to attribute Joes casual attitude to since he's older and wiser and more open minded. I'd prefer to be wrong about both of them.
I personally like both Joe and Amy. Their conversation reminds me of the wisdom of iron versus stone. But from a practical and logical point, how do you decide to run public comment and not expect a good deal of of idiocy from the average public? If you want cerebral responses you wouldn't publish on YouBoob. If you can't easily handle stupid comments or even intelligent rebuttal or opinions then turn comments off and/or move to another platform to broadcast your message. Whining about negative comments is pointless.
