The fact that Joe has to point out that CZcams's algorithm is steering away from his content because he won't extrapolate fact shows EXACTLY what type of world we live in. Stay strong and keep up the great work!
Just a thought, but could it be due to you breaking up your videos into multiple topics? Personally, I enjoyed your videos more when you did a deep dive into the specifics of everything you talked about. That might just be my personal opinion though.
@@GuitarXXXPlayer so, being a good guy with no assumptionâs gets you a big one? The world is really broken⊠and not to bash, but he does lightning rounds like this to answer questions that he canât do when the episode is a deep dive đ, the channel is getting bigger and I respect him for doing a video for just to answer questions that are worth doing so đ€đŒ
Agreed. Shame as his content is really what media like CZcams were/ should be for.
@@GuitarXXXPlayer This type of video doesn't seem to be his usual fair. I like the the deep dives too, but it's pretty awesome that he takes the time to answer the questions asked by viewers. There's just no way to get very many without doing this type of composite video, at least occasionally.
Well, he didn't actually say that. I think his point was more that he doesn't use the super click baity titles. Everyone hates them, but the fact is that they work.
Hey Joe! Algorithm report here!
Just so you know, Iâd never seen you in my life up until about a week ago and CZcams knew Iâd been watching more science and âscience adjacentâ content and it suggested a video of yours with a topic Iâve been really into. Since then Iâve probably watched about 40 of your videos and subscribed! So hopefully thereâs more people like me and your metrics start to look up! Hey joe, I love the channel, maybe more videos about history, oddities and mysteries would help, they're by far my favourite.
The more popular recent content seems to be emotionally charged for people. Like the aging video and asteroid video have much more overall views due to how they personally effect people.

Yours is the most varied (and humorous) science video series available today. Thank you for being there for us, Joe Scott. The variety of this "answers" show was impressive. I've got solar panels on the roof of my house, here in Denmark, and the government charges you for producing more power than you use. Their reasoning behind it is, that houses with solar panels, are putting extra stress on the grid. This seems completely illogical in my mind, not to mention very counterproductive. When we initially got the solar panels, they we're a great investment, but the government realized how much money they were loosing to private solar installations, so they changed the rules. Why can't we just move towards green energy, without having to shoot ourselves in the knees at every turn. Metaphorically speaking of course.
Oh no! That makes no sense! Are you supposed to unplug the panels or the grid? What nonsense! đ
@@tawnya0627 as far as I can tell, you're supposed to use as much as you produce. But how am i supposed to use the energy of a family of 4, while no one is home during the day? It makes no sense
In that case it would make sense to either turn the panels off if that's possible, or simply release the current into the ground instead of feeding it into the grid. Still wasted energy, but it wouldn't use the power grid.
@@magnuskaadner5246 Is is possible to go completely off grid? I'm not on the grid here in Texas, but I don't have appropriate storage either. When people in my state are living without electricity I have electric, but I have to use a generator to use my AC in the summer heat. The logic of the government makes no sense. They can store the energy you're producing and sell it back to you when you need it! And probably are.
@@tawnya0627 whole battery setup. Tesla sells batteries but most home will need to 2-3 to be self sufficient in sunny/hot climates.
Happy summer to Joe Scott & everyone!!
You have no idea how much I appreciate your content man! I found your stuff about a month ago and I don't think there has been anything else on my TV since, lol. Also a total upside is finding this kind of great content from a fellow Texan!
Man, if I wasnât still just a teenager I have no doubts Iâd be a loyal patreon member of this channel. I can affirm, with honor, that this dude makes my lunch and dinner times exponentially tastier.
Thanks Joe, just realized how long I've been watching you! Enjoy your escape from the summer heat â€ïž
I think we really need to see a proper break-down of the costs of launch rather than what SpaceX charges per launch. It could be that the numbers are amazing, but currently we do not have any information on whether the launches are profitable or running at a loss.
There are definitely reasons why SpaceX might choose to run losses on each launch, if that means they look more competitive than they actually are. Let's remember that most of SpaceX's market value lies in its percieved future potential, not as a consequence of any profits achieved. That's fair enough, of course, but it also means that before it goes public (which it looks like it's going to) the current owners might have an interest in inflating its value as much as they possibly can before selling and only then publish more correct numbers.
I don't know either way but it wouldn't be the first time Musk did something of that sort.
If you reuse a rocket only once. Thatâs a savings of hundreds of millions worth of hardware, that wasnât thrown away. Sure it costs to recondition the boosters, but creating new ones requires a lot of raw material. I donât see how it couldnât save money. Imagine the cost of a plane ticket if they threw the plane away after every flight?
@@alphagt62 well, it sounds like the difference is that it's $62million for a launch with a new rocket and $50million with a re-used one.
Also, SpaceX's COO said, last year I think, that the re-use option only really saves money if the rocket can be made ready again within about 24 hours. Currently it takes 27 days.
It's not all about materials cost. In fact, that part is probably the least of their worries.
As I said though, I don't know what the true cost of launch is, but I do know that the true cost isn't made public. Until it is, we don't really know.
@@alphagt62 having said that, sometimes re-conditioning can be pricier than buying new. It really depends.
Absolutely agree with you.
Yeap, until we see SpaceX's ledger it is kinda speculative to find out if SpaceX reusability is profitable, having only contract prices some of which are available.
Nevertheless, in 2015 WSJ got some leaked papers from the SpaceX insider, which shown that SpaceX barely floating near breakeven and(at that moment) has been planning to start launching Starlink for getting "enormous profitability".
Why it is so?
IMHO, reusable rockets are extremely expensive. For reusability rocket needs very expensive rocket engines, which must take huge stress (while for none reusable rockets everything is designed to serve once but well), overcomplicated avionics, additional parts like landing legs and aerodynamic frames with further complication of hydraulic system, and always search for compromise in so many parameters that's it is truly a masterpiece of the rocket design. However, there is launch market and suddenly it is not that big to fulfill needs of reusable rockets. In other words despite existence of reusable rockets there is no much need to launch anything so often. That's why Starlink appeared - to bring launches for SpaceX. Almost every SpaceX launch beginning back from 2020 is a Starlink launch. While giving launches for company, Starlink also provides additional investments for Starship (ultimate reusable rocket, which doesn't have any launch market at all, so lately became another Starlink career).
What about Starlink? Official data and expert opinions say, that it is SolarCity-alike money pit with unclear financial future.
Does SpaceX get any profit? If any - it is highly questionable.
@@Immanatum I agree. Having looked at what Starlink costs to set up and run, it really doesn't look like a viable business. Just a big back hole into which billions will have to be poured every year. I mean, 42000 sattelites that need to be replaced every 4-5 years. That's in the region of launching 100k sattelites per decade for Starlink alone.
The only reason anyone thinks this is a good idea is because it's Elon Musk doing it. This is such a poorly developed idea I simply can't fathom why people aren't laughing hysterically over it. It genuinely sounds like one of those 'future ideas' from the late fifties, or like if you locked twelve engineers in a room and briefed them to manufacture the least practical, least affordable, most complicated to implement, and most burdensome ongoing solution to providing internet connectivity to consumers who mostly won't be able to afford the product.

I agree about the graphics from solar apps. I got my system activated in early 2020 and definitely enjoy looking at what we use and when. It would be much more useful if everyone could track what they use and when; maybe even make electrical panels much smarter to where they can be controlled at a level that diverts power from less used areas in the house to more occupied areas.
Anyhow, great video as always and have fun being away from the Texas oven, the rest of us will stay HERE AND SUFFER the firey death heat without you! đ€Ł
When we got our panels installed we bought a cheap $35 tablet during Black Friday that just shows the energy usage and set it out like a piece of art.
I got my panels 6 years ago and my app is garbage and stopped working. I got it fixed once and it broke again. Is there a 3rd party company app you can download or use?
@@bryanshealy1260 I have Tesla's Solar panels and the app works fine. I can't view previous output or data but I can see the use during an individual day; that's the only flaw I found for solar only.
@@josephdavis9204 You know what would be awesome? If someone invented a game for renewables, where the more you reduce a given building's energy requirements the better your score. So installing solar panels would be the biggest win, followed by points for installing smart lighting, switching the AC off while at work, etc.
My company decided to go solar and we just finished the setup and configuration in May. Our building is for office work and manufacturing so we use a LOT of power; fortunately our roof is completely flat so we get the same sunlight throughout the day and changing seasons. We only used half of our roof for solar panels so we could double our output if it ever became necessary or profitable. Unfortunately Florida sucks for renewable energy and the government lets power companies do what they want a lot of the time. We have more power than we need, so the owners decided to put in some EV charging stations for employees to use free of charge. I was hoping we would have batteries installed so we could still operate if the power grid went out, but apparently there are issues with batteries and 3 phase power or something? I don't know...it just sucks to sit in the dark when you are producing megawatts of solar power a day. We'll get to 100% renewables one day, I just hope I am alive to see it.

8:30 I donât find it plausible that we know more about Mars than about the ocean floor. This has to be one of those motivated factoids that laments a wish for more knowledge of the ocean, without actually quantitying anything to justify its claims.
We have photographed nearly every square meter of Mars, but there are places in the ocean that no one has ever seen, even with a robotic probe submarine. Really. So yeah, visually, at least, we know more about Mars than about the ocean floor. Sad, isn't it?
I like how the saying has moved on from "The far side of the Moon," to "Mars." Probably quite true; there are and have been a lot of orbiters around the red planet.
An EV advocate on twitter has a similar system to the app you show and his system includes electric water heating. Which to me seems like a great place to store excess sunlight! I need a new hot water system so maybe I should do some feature creep and install solar too haha

I can attest to the Hello Fresh meals being huge... I used to buy the 4-person meal box and each meal easily fed 6-8 people.
11:45 yeah, the energy independence thing always surprised me, in that people in the Midwest weren't just gung ho for it.
Like, I don't know how many what if Apocalypse games I played with people, that the fact that you could just stay home and charge your car, while others had to scavenge or fight for gas was a game changer in my mind.
Or just not wanting the government and big corps controlling your life, and how owning your own power production put the power (pun intended) back in your hands.
I mean you see it, but being anti-green has been more important to more people where I grew up than being self-relient despite what they say.
Self reliance is always a good thing. Hunting, fishing, and generating your own power, all good things. I think the issue is the outlay of cash. Itâs super cheap to get connected to the power grid, it costs a fortune to outfit a system with solar panels and batteries. While it may save in the long run, having the cash to do it is another story.
@@alphagt62 definitely more than a normal hunting kit, and even that can be pretty pricey
In what way is it energy independent? Does Silica magically transform itself into Silicon with hopes and dreams? Are the manufacturing plants for other components run with energy fairies? Do the cargo ships transporting all this together running on bio-oil?
Oil/Gas has far more energy density than Solar. Tidal, water, Geothermal have more as well. I don't mean to be argumentative but I just never understand the compartmentalisation of how this is all made, the returns, maintenance etc..
@@Erebusmc Because I, a real person, can't realistically own an oil refinery, nor do I own any oil or natural gas wells.
But I can for ~20-30 years at a time, more if products improve, own my own production of energy.
Geothermal is great too, same thing, I own land I can draw water from and pump water through allowing me to regulate temps with less power (future increase efficiencies with heat pumps for heat storage and reduced needed flows). Though fewer people have this than roof space, unfortunately.
Admitally wind is far better toward personal reduction on society. I could reasonably build a wind turbine from raw materials, even easier for upcycled parts. Though for safety and ease of maintenance, I probably will buy those as well. Again though I am lucky to have a few points of high wind capture to take advantage of, that fewer people have compared to roof tops.

Good to keep in mind that there's a difference between launch cost and launch price (at least from the perspective of the launch company). If SpaceX cuts their launch cost by half with Starship, do they have any pressure to reduce their price accordingly, or just pocket the difference? Until other companies can do the same thing they don't really have any price pressure at the moment. Reducing prices would be competing with themselves.
It's not like when they were trying to prove themselves & low prices was how they got customers to bite. Now they're a known quantity in the market.
How true. But keeping the launch price high encourages the competition to try for a piece of the pie, while limiting your profit margin would only slow down the development of better launch systems.
Elon does have specific goals in mind, and plans to get there within his lifetime. Let him charge whatever he wants.
Huge profits = more competition.
Innovation, Reusability & Competition. Those are the factors to help us to become a truly spacefaring civilization, and those are driven by profits.

1:58 - that graph, obviously, misses many many launchers. For example, for a smallish satellite to SSO, Chinese hypergolic fueled, nor-reusable (that is, as bad as it gets) Long March 2D costs about the same per kilogram as Falcon 9.
The question is, how much of the cost saving does SpaceX transfer to customers, that is, how much lower they _could_ go and still stay profitable? Don't forget that Falcons finance Starship development.
(SpaceX is exaggerating like any company trying to sell a product.)
Reusing rockets is kind of a bad idea. Repairing a rocket is is full of problems .
I bet it turns out the rate of explosion over 100 launches is so much higher than ever. The costs will shoot back up.
Can we at least agree it is cheaper than anything else just by observation. How much ship goes up and how much ship comes back.
@@criticalevent Thst is easy to answer. They have been for sure. It takes almost a week to make one Raptor engine. Three launches last week is more than half a years worth of Raptor engines. 27 weeks.
Thank you so much for your content, I look forward to watching every one.
I love your channel. Been watching for a couple years now. I enjoy the charisma and the subjects you talk about. Iâll support you no matter the changes.
I find for-profit companies rarely bring down costs in any long term sense. Whether looking at public utilities which have gone private or healthcare providers that have gone from non-profit charities to private for-profit companies, it never seems to be cheaper in the long term. Kill out competition and get some public support, then ratchet up the costs to those paying (taxpayers in this case).
Those services aren't comparable to this. SpaceX is not a public service, it is a government contractor. They are cheaper because they can provide a service at a lower cost than Soyuz. There was No competition before SpaceX at all.
Ladies and gentlemen and other... it's time to smash that like button.
Could you do an episode of your solar power journey? Nothing super personal, but like the company you used or researched, any battery storage, pros and cons. Did it meet your expectations?
When you started talking about fecal transplants the first thing I thought of was South Park. Specifically the episode where Kyle's mom gets a fecal transplant and goes around town talking it up, while simultaneously people are chasing Tom Brady (because a winning athlete has to have the best butt microbes right?) and poop quickly becomes the Spice from Frank Herbert's Dune. love it!
10:19 Absolutely. Monitoring and measuring feedback is great for everything. Having a way to see your electric usage makes it so much more tangible how much you use and much more provoking to turn stuff off. Using a scale to weigh yourself or biofeedback devices to see your glucose or blood-pressure or heart-rate, etc. make it so much more motivating to try to manage them than being in the dark about it. This goes for pretty much everything. In fact, it can get to the point where it feels like a game, trying to get everything to the optimal points, trying to get your electric usage as close to 0 as possible, trying to get your bio-stats to stay in the healthy range and such like it's a challenge.
10:56 There's no reason to feel guilt about using renewables and being less affected by oil-related problems in the world. That's the whole point, if oil-people hadn't opposed green-energy so vehemently, we would be using orders of magnitude less oil right now (if at all) and wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place. The only solution is to get off it ASAP. Righties are the ones whining about high gas prices, as well as the ones criticizing Biden for going to Saudi Arabia to try to fix the prices, and also the same ones who refuse to switch to renewables and thus causing the problem in the first place. đ
The ârightiesâ want things done their way. Itâs a trend or pattern you see with lots of people with everything from environmentalism to gun control to economics. And with any issue, there are idiots on all sides who refuse even the best compromises. People donât want improvement, They want their ideas implemented which they believe to be best. In this case, the righties want domestic drilling and fracking within the US.
Don't know if this is a thing in other coutries aswell (probably) but smart thermostats are pretty common in the netherlands. If one of my kids turns on their pc i can see the meter going up. Makes you aware of how much power your equipment is using (the oven/mircowave is shocking)
I HAVE INCURRED SO MUCH LOSSES TRADING ON MY OWN...I TRADE WELL ON DEMO BUT I THINK THE REAL MARKET IS MANIPULATED... CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT OR AT LEAST TELL ME WHAT I'M DOING WRONG ?
@Ajiboye Mike I strongly advise you against self trading, it's really dangerous and had brought so many investors down, you need someone with the knowledge and strategies, someone dedicated to the crypto currency market business, and I will strongly recommend expert, Mrs Linda Raschke
@@anthoniaellen7553 Wow I'm just shock you mentioned and recommended Expert Mrs Linda Raschke,I thought I'm the only trading with her
I'm a huge fan of crypto, I hold few coins in my wallet, while I trade the rest with my Expert, Mrs Linda Raschke she's really Good.
You can trade with Expert Mrs Linda Raschke , she's really good at crypto trading and also in Bitcoin mining
I only trust Mrs Linda Raschke with my investment. I am now able to send my kids to great school in US.
I hope you're enjoying your travels. Bon voyage and stay safe.
Hi Joe!! All I can say is to keep it up!!! Your videos are more educational than anything on youtube. Being a physicist myself, I enjoy your videos a lot. Not only that, I and everyone in the science community are indebted to you to popularize science to the common society that we, scientists, could never do. We thank you for that. We will be always with you!
Re _Hello Fresh_ - how about transport footprint - this is probably substantial? Why not simply shop at your local farmers' market, just like most of us in Europe do?
Hellofresh is a German company, this is hardly "how most of us in Europe do", it literally comes from here. They expanded into the US from Europe, not the other way around. And Hellofresh for a big part sources locally as well.
So, you can cool it with the US stereotypes lol
Because America doesn't have small local markets that are easily accessible for most people
It gets shipped by shipping companies that are already in the area shipping other things. Around here the postal service delivers hello fresh, they're already going to be in neighborhoods every day anyway. So it's not really adding anything to the footprint that isn't already going to be there. So if there are 50 people getting hello fresh that just start going to the farmers market that they may not actually have locally, that's possibly 50 cars driving some distance that otherwise wouldn't be.
@@NURDVEVO Yeah - it is packaged in recycled paper, but has been trucked from across half the continent (if not more...)
HelloFresh's main appeal for US consumers is the pre-planned aspect of the meal. Cooking at home is seeing a huge decline, most of the upcoming generation can't make anything other than box foods with simple instructions. Also most adults in any given household usually work 40 hours a week and doing that plus housework plus cooking plus child-rearing etc is exhausting and time-consuming. Instead of using time to plan/shop/cook, HelloFresh and other meal plan kits allow someone to skip the plan/shop stage and spend 20 mins for a fresh meal. It makes the consumer feel good about themselves i/o going out to buy fast food. I'm not advocating for/against this mentality and this is personal opinion of course. Honestly the whole gogogodon'tstopworkworkwork thing here is getting worse, but that's a whole other discussion.
Probs not. Elon Musk is a massive grifter
The most successful grifter in history, with a half dozen successful companies. Just because you don't like him doesn't make him a grifter. Con men don't produce successful products. They run for public office and pay the media to lie for them.
You sound talentless and jealous.
@@sebione3576 What's you're point? Bernie Madoff was considered one of the most successful traders until he wasn't.
Thank you patreon! I can't afford to sub right now but you guys are great for supporting Joe!
I have been watching this channel for 3-4 years, and yeah I have subscribed and I like most of the videos, but that's pretty much the extent of my commitment. After listening to the beginning of this video, I think this will be my first patreon subscription in youtube. Well done Joe.
You're one of like 3 channels I click the bell for, not sure if that's enough to help but I will never miss one of your videos either way. Keep being amazing! :D
I really like your videos and I regularly check to see what you have made. Keep being yourself and going your own direction. Love you back, thanks.

From one Joe to another; thank you!
Before watching this video, I used your code with Henson Shaving and just used their razor for the first time. Thank you so much for having them as a sponsor previously! Their razor has given me the best, closest shave I've ever had. I always have problems with reddened, irritated skin after shaving, but not this time!
Keep doing what you do. I discovered your channel in the past year or so and have literally watched I think every single video from start to finish that you've released since then. I will provide monetary support when I can afford to do so.
Another good video. Nice job, Joe!
Awesome as always, Joe.
