- Join me at the Bluebell Railway for a Driver's Eye View of the Line with No.80151 a member of the BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T class of locomotives. If you are able to visit the railway you can be sure of a warm welcome from the staff and volunteers who keep this wonderful railway operating just as it did back in the days when steam was still king of the rails.
The Bluebell Railway is an 11 mile (17.7km) heritage line located almost entirely in West
Sussex, England with Sheffield Park being the exception as it is located just over the border in East Sussex. The railway is managed by the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society using steam traction to operate trains between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, serving intermediate stations at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote.
It was the first preserved standard gauge steam-operated railway in the world to operate a public service. The society ran its first train on 7 August 1960, less than three years after the line from East Grinstead to Lewes had been closed by British Railways. Today the line is managed and run by volunteers supported by a team of full time employees. The railway began amassing its collection of steam locomotives before steam had stopped running on British mainline railways in 1968, today it has over 30 steam locomotives, the second largest collection in the UK after the National Railway Museum. The railway is also home 150 carriages and wagons, most of them pre-1939.

Super great video 👌BIG LIKE 😊
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride 😊👍.
A nice train ride. Very nice and picturesque valleys! Cheers mate!❤😊
Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride 😊.
Unprecedented,,, Your efforts are appreciable.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video 😊.
It's a long time since I've been to this line. What a massive change! All for the best.
It's a nice ride, well worth another visit if you get the opportunity
I am very lucky to have this beautiful preserved railway very close to where I live in the gorgeous West Sussex countryside. It is simply stunning when all the namesake bluebells are sprouting alongside of the track in the spring.
I have travelled up and down that line on numerous occasions
Once I was lucky enough to blag an end of the day footplate ride on the then in steam 92240 9F loco. The line only went as far as Kingscote back then and we ran round the train and all the way back to Sheffield Park tender first, I shall never forget it! 😊
Hello Pete, I'm also lucky enough to live in West Sussex and I love to see the Bluebell Railway in all seasons. I have visited when the lineside is carpeted in primroses leading me to speculate that "The Primrose Line" would also have been a suitable name for the Railway. You were lucky to have enjoyed a footplate ride with the 9F, I hope it isn't too long before she's back in steam.
All Aboard. All Aboard. Enjoy the ride.
Hello Rob, a ride on the Bluebell Railway is always an enjoyable experience.
Thank you.
That was without doubt one of best coverages of the Bluebell I have seen Tim. But then it would be. As I follow you in your travels I know what to expect. Hope it was a nice day out for you, my local line, All the best .Mick
Hello Mick, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I have regularly visited the Bluebell Railway since the late 60's and I love to look back at my photo collection to see how the railway has developed and flourished into the first class attraction it is today.
Been there and walked the track a couple of times and now sat right up front thanks to you. 👍👍
Hello Keith, I'd like to walk the Bluebell Railway one day, you get to see things from a different perspective with time to take it all in. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride 😊.
Tim, what a pleasant journey. The last time I visited the Bluebell Railway was well before the mammoth work to re-open the line beyond Kingscote and reach East Grinstead. Indeed when my family lived closer to that area, than now.
The weather & sunlight complemented the setting & views. I especially appreciated the addition of your ‘as a passenger’ shots. It was all magnificent. Thank you, for sharing, again.
Hello Peter, the extended part of the railway is blending in nicely with its surroundings. At 11 miles long the railway is just the right length for families visiting with children as I was just this weekend. The volunteers have and are still are doing a great job, we owe them a big thank you for making this trip possible. Cheers. Tim.
Lovely video of a very picturesque line. Great to see so many wildflowers along the sides too. It inspired me to go poking around on maps and tracing more of the former line. Beautiful sound of the engine too. Thanks for sharing!
I love the forward view because it's a complete view, both sides along with the front view. In spring the railway is lined with primroses as well as bluebells and wild lupins. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I agree, it's lovely to see so many wild flowers.
I hope all those lineside fires are because of vegitation clearance , rather than in spite of it.
@@arch9enius I think the fires seen in this video were all controlled fires burning recently cut lineside vegetation.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I guessed so, otherwise that many fires would suggest Sir Beavis of Buttheadia was at the... handle thingy.
@@arch9enius 'Sir Beavis of Buttheadia' this one's got me beat, the closest I found was this, but I think it might be the wrong 'Sir Bevis' - reflection.eleusinianm.co.uk/medieval-literature/white-book-of-mottistone/sir-bevis-of-hampton
Another great video Tim, you always seem to catch the good weather😜Thanks for sharing. All the best.
Hi, I was lucky with the weather, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. Cheers. Tim 😊.
Excellent video, Tim. Thank you for sharing it with us. I have never been to the Bluebell Line, but I now feel I have been there! 😀
Hello James, I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊.
This clear view in this film must be much better than the view that a driver of a steam locomotive would see.
You are correct, the driver sees far less than the camera and at times he has to rely on the fireman to look for signals on corners where the driver doesn't have a clear view ahead.
Another great production with very pleasing editing. Weather was great as well. I must visit the Bluebell Railway. Why was it so quiet considering the weather?
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride and 'Yes' I was lucky with the weather. I deliberately chose a quiet week day when I knew the railway wouldn't be busy because it is easier to place a camera on the locomotive when the crew are more relaxed and able to spare the time, on busy days the footplate crew have far more to do such as showing people the inside of the cab and hopefully encouraging youngsters to become tomorrow’s volunteers.
Einfach CZcams von feinsten und eine Freude anzusehen! Vielen lieben Dank!
Thank you Tim for another wonderful video. I thoroughly enjoyed this train ride traversing the beautiful country side. Very lovely scenery passing through the meadows and fields. Great production and again thank you so much.
Hello, I'm pleased you enjoyed this ride through the gentle Sussex countryside. We owe the volunteers past and present a big thank you for making this trip possible.
Beautifull p[resentation of a beautifull line, Thank you
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.
🇬🇧 Hi Tim, many thanks for an absolute little gem of a ride chugging away on a fabulous train through the beautiful English countryside down in West Sussex on a lovely day and passing through fine looking stations. Outstanding 5*+.
Seasonal greetings to all from South Yorkshire.
Hi, thank you for the season’s greetings and kind comment. It's nice to hear from South Yorkshire, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride, although the real credit belongs to the volunteers and staff, past and present who have made this railway the wonderful attraction it is today. Best wishes from West Sussex, my home county.
Hi Tim, lovely to say 'hello' at Kingscote station.
Good to see our railway from the driver's view. I want a ride in the cab one day, maybe when it's a bit cooler outside.
I know there was disputes over West Hoathly station from the residents - there's been more new houses built now so maybe another station can be built as you say nearer Coombe bridge.
Can't see me but never mind, next time
Hello Cathy, Kingscote station looked lovely with its well stocked flower beds and beautifully restored station buildings. I hope you get that cab ride one day. A station at West Hoathly would be nice to see, but realistically its not going to happen any time soon, there is too much to be done elsewhere on the line and who knows, I might get to ride a Bluebell train to Ardingly before my time is up.
@@Timsvideochannel1 thanks for your appreciation of our station. I love working there, it's the best job I've ever done! I'm not sure what's happening with the Ardingly line, think they want to expand to Haywards Heath so can make contact with the main line as with East Grinstead. Who was it that came from Australia? Your mate Pete I assume
@@cathybonner7888Its always nice to do a job you love doing. I'd like to see the National Railway Museum and the Bluebell Railway get together to establish an outpost dedicated to electric trains, both overhead and third rail. I know there would be Health and Safety issues, but such problems are overcome elsewhere in the world. I'd love to once again hear the sound of one of the 2 Bil or 2 Hal emu's I used to travel to school on. The use of electric trains would make operations at Haywards Heath station much simpler. I was travelling with my mate Pete from Australia's Puffing Billy Railway when the Bluebell Railway kindly allowed me to mount the camera that shot this video. When I visited last weekend, I was travelling with my wife and a family from Perth, Australia. The Bluebell Railway is very popular down under with a good number of Aussie tourists visiting the Bluebell Railway when they holiday in the UK. Keep up the good work. Tim.
I have done a lot of work on that engine.. Over 30 years ago when she was in Colchester!..
The standard of restoration is superb, you must feel proud to know that the work you put in more than 30 years ago is part of the reason she looks so good today.
Great video! I need to go back to the line. Very much like 80151. I hope to volunteer one day at the railway.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and the railway is always ready to welcome new volunteers, who know's you might get to work on 80151.
Yes, that would be very amazing!@@Timsvideochannel1
Fascinating to see once again the remains of the "exploded" bridge at around 8.50. Somewhere in my box of sleeping VHS tapes I have a video of a year at the Bluebell with footage of the actual demolition. By golly the army types had fun that day...
I also remember seeing the demolition on a DVD or VHS tape. I have taken video at the Bluebell Railway ever since I bought my first video camera in the early 1980's, when I'm watching my old videos it's fascinating to see the changes over the years. When I'm too old to travel any-more, I'll edit together videos documenting the development of some of our heritage railways. I remember watching the army guys relaying part of the Ffestiniog Railway at the point where it leaves the cob to turn inland near the locomotive depot.
Thank you for the information and explanation.
G'day from Menzies Creek Tim. Another great video of your usual high standard.
Fancy seeing that scruffy bearded bloke in the
striped shirt appearing at East Grinstead Station during your first arrival. I enjoyed my trip with you on the train and also my Cab ride on the loco back to East Grinstead on the second trip.
Usual greetings from Downunder Tim - Cheers Puf'n-Pete.
Trust you to get in the picture Bro 🚃🚂
Hello Pete, I was at the Bluebell Railway again yesterday with a couple Australian girls and their Mum to take them on a real live steam train, they enjoyed themselves, but it will be the ice creams and children's interactive displays that they will remember.
That bearded bloke crops up in my videos all over the world 😉. It was nice to meet up, hopefully it won't be too long before we meet up again and is that a comment from your Bro? Take care. All the best from Tim and Karen.
Great video, nice scenery 23:59
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. The tunnel at 23:59 is the longest on a heritage railway in the UK.
Lovely, thanks for the upload Tim.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊.
Great video! Surprises me that the Bluebell Railway hasn’t rebuilt West Hoathly station yet.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. West Hoathly station is unlikly to be rebuilt on its current site, as it is located on a gradient, hence the society believes that any future station at West Hoathly would most likely be built a little to the North, on the level stretch from the end of the goods yard towards New Coombe Bridge
@@Timsvideochannel1 That’s a shame.
Witaj, Tim ! Serdeczne pozdrowienia. Tim 😊.
Hello, I am lucky to live just over 1 hours drive from the world's first standard gauge preserved railway, the 'Bluebell Railway' . I have seen it develop over the years from a little railway in the middle of nowhere into the wonderful tourist attraction seen in this video. The steam locomotives and carriages are beutifully preserverved, still preforming the same job they were designed to do more than 100 years ago. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Kind regards. Tim 😊.
@@Timsvideochannel1 Dziękuję, pięknie napisałeś. Pozdrawiam.😀

Well spotted, I missed that one 😊.
From what can be seen from 23:51 to 24:58, now we should all know that "the light at the end of the tunnel" really exists.
It's nice to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel 😊.

Hi Tim and your lovely wife. It's Jane here, from the Roses holiday, how are you both doing? Sean shows me your videos now and again so I keep up to date of where you're both off to. Are you doing anymore Railway discoveries holidays? The bluebell line is great isn't it? I was on the `Gloucester and Warwickshire' last week.....
Hello Jane, it's nice to hear from you, we are both keeping well. We took two Australian girls and their Mum to the Bluebell Railway yesterday, to see their first steam train and to travel in carriages that were more than 125 years old, they enjoyed it, but I think it will be the ice-creams and children's activities that they will remember. I will be spending a week visiting Welsh railways with my eldest daughter towards the end of this month. As yet I haven't booked anything overseas because our youngest daughter is getting married later this year, although I do intend to book the Gulflander and Savannahlander trains in Australia on my way to visit my son in New Zealand before the end of this year. The `Gloucester and Warwickshire' is a lovely railway, I must visit it again sooner rather than later. Next year we intend to book another Rail Discoveries holiday, but for the moment the only thing on Karen's mind is her daughters wedding. I hope you are both keeping well and please say to Sean from me. Cheers. Tim.
Me again again...I'm not suggesting or implying anything, but West Hoathly looks much more like a station than it has before in my memory. I haven't been keeping close tabs on the railway for some years, so am I missing anything? It would be a marvellous addition to the line and completes the original station complement of the line to Sheffield P. Of course, if they kept the track and points they pulled out when the Kingscote extension was completed...but probably not.
I agree that West Hoathly should be reinstated as a station..Perhaps the local residents were against it? I've no idea, but it'd give them a handy ride into East Grinstead for shopping, schools etc. Perhaps the residents could even be given discount tickets to use when travelling by train..
@@trevordance5181 Well instead of a spot for a picnic they've now got a PW depot , so well done .

Hi Tim! I see this great video and enjoy a Hirter 🍺, wonderful👍. Yesterday I have sended to you a picture of my 6 1/2 ft cactus. Best regards from Hans and Cheers 🍻🇦🇹.
Hello Hans, I saw the picture of your flowering cactus, two years is a long time to wait, but it was worth it. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers 🍺 Tim.
We have seen several small buildings on either side of the track. Most appear to be 1 room, very old & look to have chimneys. Some have windows. They do not appear near most stations. What are they used for?
Hi, most of those little buildings a permanent way huts, they are used by track workers to store equipment, take a tea-break and shelter during bad weather.
I think our family in the UK want to take us on this railway when we come over to the UK next month, is this the one that does the Christmas Special with the train all lit up with lights?
They may do that, but if so, pretty sure they aren't the only one....
Hi, if you do visit this railway, I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience. The train of lights is a feature of the Bluebell Railway Christmas timetable. I hope you enjoy your UK visit.
Absolute electric single track block or tokens block? Thank you for your patience
Hi, I saw the locomotive crews exchange tokens at both ends of the line and at the intermediate stations. Please click on this link to learn more about signalling at the Bluebell Railway - www.bluebell-railway.com/brps/signal-boxes/
The railway line is only 17km plus, why do you take more than 55 minutes to complete the journey? How fast can the steam engine goes??
The video does include more than just one ride and the locomotives are limited to 25 mph.
17:00 brighton royal pavillon , is this lady still on the run?!
parzival is waiting for her. bonandagon
Me again. Obviously very dry judging by the little spot fire sites. Were you being followed by a spotter trolley?
Some of the spot fires were deliberate to get rid of debris in a controlled way before a spark from one of the locomotives does the job in an uncontrolled manner. Trains are not followed by a fire control trolley, but the railway does have a tank wagon on standby and their own fire engine if required.
Bijzonder fraaie tenderlok. Rijtuigen met een smaakvol interieur.
De Bluebell Railway rijdt prachtige authentieke treinen. Ik ben blij dat je genoten hebt van de rit.
@@Timsvideochannel1 Dank u wel !
Beautiful, lush country we are driving through here Tim. Thank you muchly for the picturesque video. 🫠💖🙋🏻♀
Hello, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video 😊.
If this is the Driver Eye View, is he strapped to the front bumper?
I use the term "driver" to indicate it’s a "forward" facing view, The CZcams algorithm ignores "forward facing", but it loves "Driver's Eye View" and "Cab View". I know the description is a bit cynical, but I have to play by the CZcams algorithm’s rules otherwise few people will get to know of the existence of these videos.
Seems to life is blank here, rail line running lonely through the greenish land what it means!
Hello, this video was filmed on a very quiet day and the railway traverses pretty countryside, the only town is East Grinstead.
I see the traveling crane has had some cosmetic work done at least.
Are you referring to the crane at 16:04? It looks much better now, although I don't know if it is in working order. I did find this article -
www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/wagon/rs1083.html
@@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks. I've seen a modern version of these cranes operated by Balfour Beatty, though it seems to be for construction rather than breakdown s. Too bad, it might make it unnecessary to build roads all the way to an incident .
@@arch9enius I've seen the modern version of road crane used on the railways today and was left wondering what happened to the foresight and ingenuity of past generations, there is already a railway to the scene of the incident, why build a road just for a road crane? There are times when the army should be called in; they have the equipment to lay temporary roads and what better way to prepare for the day when they are needed in the field of combat.
