    Great video and interesting topic Nils! I totally agree that there is no point using big gear in higher winds when you can ride both faster and more comfortable on smaller gear. But as a relatively big guy (96 kgs) I have experienced that big boards can be a lot more rewarding to use when conditions are not so good/ wind is up/ down/ variable and gusty. Before I started foiling my favorite slalom combo was a Falcon 138 (2015) with a Loft RacingBlade 7,8. This combo simply gave me a lot more time flying on the fin than using the medium board (a Ray 111 for me at that time) for the same sail under similar conditions, like a typical professional rider may have preferred. I never experienced any control issues with the Falcon 138 with this combo, and to be honest - I often regret that I sold the board (and the beautiful fins I used with it). I would really recommend the combo - a big modern slalom board and medium sized rig - in gusty conditions. They are much easier to control than most windsurfers think. But sailing beyond 40 knots on them is really pointless, unless you accidentally end up doing it if you get surprised by a sudden gust or something... :-)

    I did 40knots...and then I woke up :/ I really hope to achieve 35knots on my Manta 71cm. But it's gonna be a hard one to achieve for me. Great video again with detailed explanation and reasoning behind set-ups.

    According to the GPS speedsurfing site, that board Edwin Harteveld uses has the details:
    Brandname Van den Berg
    Length 244
    Width 70
    Volume 115
    Production Year 2016.
    The spot Grevelingenmeer - Herkingen - Have you seen videos from there? There is a very low wall in the sea and the water is incredibly flat there.

    at speeds of 35+ kn aero drag becomes a big factor. So while the board is hardly touching the water and reducing drag it is catching the wind and causing aero drag. Same goes for the big sails.

    Nice video. Not so big riders such as Malte Reuscher are using an 80cm wide board as a big board. Considering your weight, and supposing you're using boards from the same year, what do you think it'd be faster? An 80cm or an 85? 🤔

      I saw a picture of Matteo Iachino doing close to 36 on choppy water, i would assume most PWA guys can push it to 35-38 knots in good conditions... in Race I think most PWA riders go around 28-30 average, maybe 32-34 top 🤷‍♂️

    • @WindsurfingNils
      @WindsurfingNils  Před 3 lety +1

      On a downwind you can take a smaller fin and it still holds, but i think around 30cm and smaller on the big one will not work anymore, the board is just much to wide in the tail and the piwer on the fin to high for a smaller fin to hold a 85 wide board...

      @@WindsurfingNils I remebered Craig Spottiswood wrote about this when taking an 82 cm wide mistral and a 23 cm asy fin with an 5.4 sail.
      his speeds were impressive with such a wide board:
      Mistral 137L 82wide Slalom, Doppler:- peak 42.5, 2sec 42.48, 10sec 41.07, 5x10 38.82.

    • @JDGSharpe
      @JDGSharpe Před 3 lety

      Provides a good example for your opinion that the wider boards doen't actually create a lot of drag and the fin probably contributes more drag.
      On GPS speedsurfing Graig posted the same story but actualy went faster (obviously) after changing to a speedboard. www.gps-speedsurfing.com/?mnu=user&val=107147&uid=831
      No way to verify but I would think that Graig is to be believed and others present will testify when asked.

    Just look at all the Strava times. People are riding with eBikes, Motorbikes.. Virtual speed events using a simple measuring device make no sense since people are cheating. Unless e.g. a standardized drone would record footage and measure the attempt.
