In my Facebook knitting/crocheting groups, Baby Yoda amigurumi patterns are super popular... There is no way Disney could produce a satisfying puppet in a near future - amigurumis is one of the easiest way to get one quickly.

Disney has issues strikes against some of the larger Yoda fabricators on Etsy, last I heard.
Having thousands of knit baby Yoda out there is just a big free commercial for Disney+ . Disney could have spent millions on developing toys and merchandise for the Mandalorian before the launch of the show and if it was a flop, they lose. Instead they took a wait and see approach, see what the public likes. They are smarter than you think
And when Disney saw the demand, they shut us little guys down.

Disney has gone after some creators for their Child creations.
I postulate that Disney had zero idea baby yoda would explode and take the world by storm. They were utterly and completely caught by surprise that such a thing would take off like that. It doesn't have to do with taking pictures in front of a wall at Disney and posting it to Instagram.
It's not that they didn't want to spoil it, it's more likely they were just totally clueless and caught off guard.

Oh, I have little doubt he's an integral plot point. It's good writing, and better than the last 2 starwars movies by a fair margin.
BUT, I personally doubt they understood that baby yoda would explode the way it did. I think they were unprepared for baby to even be a thing. So they didn't have anything in the pipeline to capitalize on it. I think they were caught with their pants down.

Legally it is, but if anyone deserves to have their copyright infringed it's Disney because of their history of bribing US politicians to change copyright law in their favour. And not just US law but also the law of most other countries through trade agreements.

It's not really "ambiguous" legal territory at all, they are definitely violating copyright law. The question is whether Disney will actually pursue legal action to protect their copyright, and in this case I think they will. Unlike a bunch of Harry Potter fan art on Etsy, there is a boatload of cash to be made off of Baby Yoda merchandise.
It's illegal under the laws Disney bribed politicians to make. I support anyone who violates Disney's copyrights
