      There was also the fact that Jeff Rice, who wrote the original "Kolchak" novel that became the basis for the two prototype "MOVIE OF THE WEEK" films in 1972 and '73, claimed he never gave Darren McGavin and MCA/Universal permssion to produce a weekly series based on his characters....and threatened a lawsuit. That was a good enough reason to abandon production after 20 episodes.

    Another great clip fest, Fred!
    0:10 - I was expecting Ms. Montgomery's intro to end w/ her heavily accented "in cullah".
    0:16 - The new timeslot must not have worked well enough, as ABC cancelled LMaD the next year.
    0:33 - NBSeeUs, the last NBC season slogan before the return of the Peacock. This was a local promo, probably for WNBC-TV, NYC, or KNBC-TV, LA.
    3:55 - I'm confused about whether his name is pronouced KOL-SHAK or KOL-CHAK. Most people seem to say KOL-SHAK, but it's spelled KOL-CHAK, and his boss pronounces it that way.
    4:16 - Pete Porter's acting a lot sillier in this sponsor promo than he acts on the sitcom, where he usually plays straight man to his wife.
    7:35 - Fortunately for Patrick Duffy MAN FROM ATLANTIS was cancelled early enough for him to play Bobby Ewing on DALLAS the next spring.
    9:13 - John Travolta was rarely on WELCOME BACK KOTTER by its last season, and I understand the same was true for Gabe Kaplan.
    9:25 - OPERATION PETTICOAT, w/ most of the cast from the previous season replaced, was cancelled after just about 5 weeks of this season.
    11:27 - I remember Archie's line to Maude there most from that AITF episode, which served as a pilot for MAUDE.
    12:18 - CBS recovered WONDER WOMAN from ABC's cancellation pile, insisting on moving the time setting from WW2 to current day to save on production costs.
    13:13 - This time ABC rescued GHOST & MRS. MUIR from NBC's cancellation pile. CBS did the same for GET SMART the same season. Both shows lasted just 1 more season.
    13:39 - That's 1 of my favorite moments from the entire series.
    13:40 - That bit where Dick Sargent separated into 2 people was a recycled bit from a great Dick York episode, which I think was done much better the 1st time.

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines Před rokem +2

      When Fred Silverman left ABC for NBC in 1978, the network seemed to lose interest in "OPERATION: PETTICOAT"- and so did viewers on Mondays. That's why it was cancelled after a little over a month. "WELCOME BACK, KOTTER" suffered the same fate {and then there was Gabe Kaplan's power struggle with producer James Komack; Kaplan lost, and appeared in only a few episodes during the final season, as did John Travolta, who was becoming a movie star because of "Grease"}.
