Why The Final Day CHANGED Mikel Arteta For The Better.

  • Disappointment, frustration, pain - and excitement? The latter term is still the prevailing emotion for the majority of Arsenal fans, myself included, as we look back upon the 2023/24 Premier League season. How do we put things into perspective? How do we look forward whilst keeping ourselves grounded in what has to be done to continue improving? Well, Mikel Arteta's post-match comments after Arsenal beat Sean Dyche's Everton 2-1 at the Emirates stadium on the final day of the season on Sunday afternoon may give us an indication of HOW to answer these questions.
    That is what today's video is on. Not so much about the tactics, but the season, and title race more specifically, as a whole.
    Arsenal fell behind after Idrissa Gueye scored a deflected free kick off Declan Rice, before Takehiro Tomiyasu instantly responded to make the game 1-1 before half-time.
    Arsenal huffed and puffed and even hit the bar twice through Kai Havertz and Emile Smith-Rowe. Finally, though, with his second assist of the game, Martin Odegaard set up Havertz to mean that Arsenal did their job.
    Bukayo Saka missed the game due to an injury, Gabriel Martinelli replaced him. Leandro Trossard retained his place, along with Thomas Partey, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, and David Raya. Their were also other substitute appearances from Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus, as well as the much anticipated return of Jurrien Timber.
    Manchester City defeated David Moyes on his final match managing West Ham United, beating the hammers 3-1 thanks to goals from Rodri and two from Phil Foden. Mohammed Kudus pulled one back, but it was not enough and Pep Guardiola and his side lifted the Premier League trophy.
    The gunners will be looking to bounce back next season. Can Arsenal win the Premier League title in 2024/25?
    This channel covers the entire Premier League, including Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola, Manchester City, Manchester United, who defeated Roberto de Zerbi's Brighton and Hove Albion 0-2; Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou, Aston Villa, Unai Emery, Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, Newcastle United, Eddie Howe, Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea, the Europa League, Champions League, Conference League, and the whole world of football or soccer!

    We love you Harvey! Good video as always.
    I think the clicking part is characterized by the difference in Arteta's body language right after the game ended and he spoke to the crowd and the post match presser.
    In the former, he looked like he could barely speak. He was so down. Then, when he ended that speech, something snapped, and he said,'we are gonna get it'. That defiance continued in the post-match presser, where he seemed like he was already planning for next season. I think next season will be the one.

      @harveygration  Před 13 dny +7

      So good I’m gonna pin it. Think that summed it up better than I could. I couldn’t put my finger on it. It was like something just correlated in his head-there wasn’t just defiance, it was conviction. It was like the Arteta of December 2019 when he joined. It invigorated me.

    • @kennethm.4998
      @kennethm.4998 Před 13 dny +5

      @harveygration Agreed on the conviction part. It was like when Arsenal in 02/03 were absolutely superb but they lost out to Man Utd for the title. Wenger then said Arsenal would go unbeaten with such conviction that he sounded crazy. That pain was harnessed and the rest is history.
      Yesterday felt the same for me. I even watched City lift that title and told my friends who were with me that we're the ones who are going to break their streak.

      42 yo, transformed a whole institution, 3rd youngest squad, 5th highest wages in league (2nd lowest in big 6), most wins, goals, and highest GD in a PL campaign to date. He deserves more than one 👏. He’s got a long way to go too! Which is even more frightening.

    Bro!! Thank God for Mikel Arteta... Here's a crazy thought; imagine it's the olden days and it's wartime, all foott managers are generals which country do you reckon would win that war? Them latin countries got me spooked for real (wow Spain! right?) I would definitely watch that😉
    Back to arsenal, I love you guys, I'm a fan from Nigeria and I must say I appreciate the clarity of Arteta's vision, the unwavering backing of the owners ( Remember wen kroenke out😂?)
    I love the mindset of the squad, we're not victims; we are the arsenal, we don't stop trying! We got our resilience back back baby!
    I believe the fans were too nervous, understandably, at the Emirates this season and it affected the team's performances. We've gotten the experience we needed, now we've gotta turn tt Emirates into a fortress. That's the next step as fans, show up loud and ready on game days.
    I've been a chatterbox, . I heard the emotions and I hug you Harvey, no diddy.

      There was also a level of clinicality to Arteta yesterday that I haven’t seen in a while. Almost like it took yesterday to convince him of something. What that may be will all be covered later 😉

  • @socialjoins
    @socialjoins Před 13 dny +6

    Why is everyone so down? It was 100% over from the villa home game. And I didn't have us down winning the league cause the squad overall quality is not there. Can we contest without saka/odegaard playing for months like city do when KDB is out.There's years of data that shows city not dropping points near the end of seasons. Our teams not there yet. Once the right pieces are in.We will all know when that squad looks like winning.Heck the rivals will know it before arsenal fans. It's on its way im not worried. People stop being down this all part of the projections.

    Even a quarter of a season from Timber & Partey; and we'd have won it.
    Technically, our only addition was Kai.
    We were more or less left with the same option in midfield and at left back as last season.
    I'm sure we get it done next season barring a massive injury crisis.

    • @harveygration
      @harveygration  Před 13 dny +2

      It’s certainly a case of what could’ve been. The Partey stuff relates to the margins. We ultimately couldn’t replace him for whatever reason and we suffered with no replacement.
      Timber was much more uncontrollable. But lessons and more lessons. Look how close we were even with these two massive blows.

    That was motivational Harvey, even I as a simple remote fan who barely attends games was feeling deflated but your video that's an aggregation of all that has been said has pulled me up and looking forward defiantly. We need to buy better in the summer and I hope no first team player will be sold. I believe selling Xhaka set us back because we couldn't just build on from what we had done on the previous season. It took until January to find our groove, that's why I would not sell Gabi Jesus or even Partey. Better sell the fringe players like Reece Nelson, Nkentia, Ramsdale but keep ESR...

    • @harveygration

    Arsenal's focus this transfer window should be raising the floor, not the ceiling. Pep is able to consistently push for titles due to his rotations keeping his players fresh, as long as we invest in some long term competition for very shallow positions (RW, CDM, CB etc.) I believe that we'll be able to push for a title. We've already seen this year we have a title winning starting 11

    • @qwerty1994ize
      @qwerty1994ize Před 13 dny +1

      You’re right. I think that’s why we were able to compete this year. We have players who can play across multiple positions which in turn gives our “starters” time to rest. Seeing Timber and Zinny invert at the same time was a lovely sight.

Haaland, Salah, Vardy and even van persie come to mind as the most recent winners who finished their puzzles with that final cog in the wheel. We need someone who will get us 20 goals a season guaranteed. That can be the difference between 28 wins and 29 wins.

    Let me first give Mikel Arteta his flowers, what a job he has done and he's still doing at Arsenal!
    Now, for me 2 things are important, first Arteta must be brave and ingenious such that he has to beat City home and away next season.
    Second he has to avoid the kind of results we had against Newcastle at St. James in the 1 nil loss and the loss to west Ham and villa at the Emirates. For me those are the aspects and moments of the Just concluded season that Arsenal must review and be determined to correct.
    It's not impossible to stop Pep's dominance, it's all about being a little smarter and ruthless.
    Things are obviously going in the right direction and it's only a matter of time before Arsenal win the league again.
    All the best in 2024/2025 season God willing.

    1) When Newcastle scored from a dead ball against us earlier

    Have enjoyed all your vids this season. One of my favourite things to do over a cuppa. First thing Arteta needs to do is take the pressure off them so they can play freely and with the knowing that they are good enough. They have played with such intensity and stress that it may need an opposite mental approach. I hope to see them play with freedom and belief. Would love a video on your overall reflections on how the season went. What are your thoughts on our mentality (both a reflection on this season and going forward), particularly after Rodri's comments. Did we have a champion's mentality this season? Was it only in parts? Is there an adjustment we need to make mentally going forward or are we on the right path and simply need tweaks player/tactics wise?

      Interesting. Definitely thinking of doing a whole season-reviewy thing. As for mentality. Emotionally the team has matured so much, we are definitely ready in that regard. I think anything else is just letting the team and manager grow, but Rodri’s comments missed the mark in my eyes.

      @robinflakes I believe Chelsea will be a surprise package next season. People are sleeping on Chelsea but once all their players get fit, some of whom barely played this season like Lavia and Fofana, they will be a force. Poch is a tactically savvy coach, even Chelsea fans don't recognise this but he has coached average Spurs team to beat Gadiola in champions league. He beat Bayern Munich in their prime with PSG. With Chelsea he won't have premadonas to please but young coachable players...

      @harveygration  Před 13 dny

      I’ve always said you’re not as bad as people think. And w/ Poch’s changes re the system (Cucurella role change, good balance of interiors vs width holders etc etc), the youth of the squad and more £ in the bank, you should be T4 next season (will be v competitive though). Title talk is still on the horizon only. But get yourself a Toney/Osimhem type up front and that’s another positive. BUT BUT BUT-let the team grow! They are so young, don’t heap even more expectation on them than there already is. They just need to grow.

  • @markpotter544
    @markpotter544 Před 13 dny

    Here is my opinion on the season. First, let me be clear that I ve never been part of the Arteta out club, in fact I was in opposite, and I am not arteta out now. Although Arteta has done really well, I believe that his team selection and squad management this season resulted in second place again. You can look at it glass half full or empty but I think there was an opportunity this season to win the league, and instead of taking it Arteta was preoccupied with Havertz in 8, and that’s frustrating. In the beginning of the season, I thought that Arsenal will win the league. However, the league for me was done in the first game vs villa in December 2023 (not second one, the first one) as it was the game where I realized that Arteta won’t let go of this Havertz in 8 thing, i e Willian thing all over again. I can accept experimenting for a few games but villa game was game #16, while Havertz in 8 hasn’t really worked since PRE-SEASON. Now I agree that Arteta and the team have done EXTREMELY well in the second half of the season but the end result is same as last year bc in order to win the league in the current environment you have to be good throughout the season, not just half of it. If you do your job throughout the whole season, you wouldn’t need tottenham to help you, as Liverpool has done in 2019/20. Why does all this matter? bc the league was lost by 2 pts, and if those two points were recovered, then probably goal difference would have adjusted in our favor too. You cant win every game, there will be pts lost along the way. However, you have to make sure that you put your maximum into winning those points, and for me playing Havertz in 8 is not maximizing you chances of winning the league bc city or Liverpool will punish you, and that’s what happened. Sure you ll win games bc your overall team is still good and havertz in 8 does contribute still, especially against lower teams, and other players will put in a double shift (Odegaard, Rice) but it wont work throughout the whole season. Also, it’s ok to use Havertz as second striker sometimes, like against Brighton, but it should not be base case. On the dropped pts, we have 5 draws and 5 losses in PL (last year we had 6 draws and 6 losses, so an improvement). The only points dropped when Jorginho, Rice and Odergaard STARTED in midfield was Chelsea away draw (for which I thought Arteta chose the wrong tactic in my opinion, should have done same as away vs Tottenham) and draw away to city. The only pts dropped was TWO AWAY DRAWs vs CITY and CHELSEA. While in all the LOSSES in PL, except for West Ham (where trossard was in 8), Havertz STARTED in 8. Arsenal btw lost more games than city and Liverpool in PL this season. To the people who still believe that Havertz in midfield works, the biggest indicator that it doesn’t is the fact that Arteta has pretty much given up on it himself. It’s not a coincidence that the only two teams that we haven’t won against this season in PL were Villa and Fulham, in all those 4 games, Havertz STARTED in 8. Also, what a coincidence that the only game we lose in PL in the second half of the season (Villa) is the game where havertz starts in midfield. Out of the dropped pts, if we had turned 1 draw into a win or two losses into draws, we would have been champions, that was the difference. In my opinion, if Arteta went with jorginho instead of havertz in those games, we would have achieved it, and probably more. It’s not a coincidence that Arsenal went on a run when arteta started using jorginho more. The fact that Jorginho started only 10 games this season is crazy, he started 9 in half of a season last year. To the people who point to Jorginho mistake vs tottenham, that was from rustiness from not playing, you cant expect a player who hasn’t really played to start playing really well from the start, he played well since. You don’t just have to look only at dropped pts, eye test, personal stats of Havertz in 8 (not great), the fact that in the first half of the season Arsenal were struggling to create chance from open play (those stats miraculously improved in second half of season, when Havertz played more up top), it all points to the same conclusion. Therefore, in my subjective opinion if Arteta gave up on Havertz in 8 earlier, we would have been PL champions. On Havertz, unlike many fans earlier in the season, Havertz was never a bad player for me, he was just played out position by Arteta. Since the moment he joined, I knew that he was a false 9 bc it suits his profile given how Arsenal play, and up front is where he played for every previous club, and for the national team. Also, for every previous club, he was tried in several positions before settling up front, so Arteta naively went through the same process again. However, even I was surprised how bad havertz was in 8, but like I said before it was clear in pre-season already, and you could argue it takes time but game week 16 is too long for me. Also, theoretically you can convert a forward into a midfielder (why you d do that in season where you can win the title is a different question), and I have no problem with that, but if it’s not working, just play him in 8 at the end of the game when the result is secure, and don’t play him EVERY game. Havertz STARTED 30 PL games this season, and played in 37 out of 38 PL games in total. Based on starts, he is part of the core group of players but have his performances, especially in midfield, justify being part of that core because every other player in this core has justified his inclusion throughout the season. The core players based on starts (30+ starts) were Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Rice, Odegaard, Saka. Just to clarify, jesus, zini, trossard, jorginho STARTED less than 20 games each, martinelli started 24, and all are therefore not part of this core starters list this season. Trossard btw has 12 goals in 18 starts, and should have played more. In my opinion Havertz should have been part of the latter list rather than the first one, unless he played as a false 9 during the whole season. Second part of season, Havertz deserved to be starting, but that’s because he was playing up front. On Raya vs Ramsdale, I really don’t care because in either case it’s a good goalkeeper playing as a goalkeeper. Now on the excuses: on depth, clearly the run in the second half of the season points to the fact that there is depth in this team, why for example ESR got man of the match one game then haven’t really played since. Same for partey and timber injuries, somehow team managed a good run without them. Obviously, having them would help but it could have been done without them, city played without KDB for half of the season. To the people who say that it was always arteta s plan to play partey and rice together in midfield, before his injury, partey played at rb, so you cant claim that. On Arteta saying that in any other league, he d win, well we knew this when Liverpool got 97 pts and haven’t won, so no news there, arteta recently said it himself. Also, Inter won with 90+ pts this season, Leverkusen 90 (34 game season), real madrid 90+, so arteta with 89 pts wouldn’t win in those leagues either, and those teams also have good coaches. George Graham won against then mighty Liverpool, wenger vs Fergie’s United, so it was tough for everyone. In the beginning of the season, pundits were saying that the Havertz purchase would make or break Arteta. I could never understand why, bc no one was forcing Arteta to play havertz, especially in midfield, but now I understand why. Arteta has done really well overall and has generally done well with transfers, but when you go against Pep’s city you have to be on point, and Arteta just simply wasn’t. At some point, he has to make that shift from a promising manager to title winning manager, and he has to stop making silly/unnecessary mistakes, NO excuses. I still think he can win a major trophy, but the risk of him being a Poch of Arsenal is NOT OFF the table. Having said all that, the club has made a choice to go with a promising but inexperienced manager and mistakes are part of the process. His potential to win PL is still there and Arteta should continue trying, and he and the team should get all the support in next few seasons. I personally think that the teams needs a good 8, a piece that is missing

      Heck of a lot to get into there. First of all, the point of this video is that something seems to have flipped with Mikel-there was a conviction to him, a ruthlessness-and for me, this could very well foreshadow a more ruthless approach to how he uses the squad.
      This has literally been my main critics of him the WHOLE season-his squad management. Normal for a 42yo but also something he quickly needs to move on from.
      I don’t know if you have seen my videos from the start of the season, but to summarise: Partey still inverted into midfield alongside Dec + our early season set up was largely to help us get used to attacking in different ways. For example in transition with the two SS’s.
      This isn’t a compliment to Arteta, our attacking dynamics were off. But as I maintained the whole time, Havertz at CF has been where he will play the majority of his minutes for Arsenal; or the tip of a diamond in a 3-diamond-3.
      Partey’s injury and Jorginho playing with one hip HAS made Kai play more mins in midfield than he would have. This is where we differ, yet are still of the same opinion. It is on Arteta and the leadership group for trusting TP to be available for 25 games plus.
      For me, personally, I’d rather turn all the room for improvement into a massive positive in a year where we have just come up short. But I reason with your sentiments all the same-although there is still no reason to not be positive overall going into next season.
      The PL is the most competitive league-18 teams are able to take points off anyone-the only league to say that is a possibility. In my pre season predictions I said Arsenal and City would both finish on 89-93 points. Spot on (humbly hahahaha). Next season improvement is a must. A big trophy is a must. Again what I’m hinting at in this video. But it seems like (hopefully at least) that’s the natural progression we can expect next year.
      I’ve probably missed a lot, sorry, but thanks for commenting again.

      Valid argument. Our midfield control without Zinny and another pivot along Rice was truly awful. Havertz as a rigid 8 will never work and that should be considered a universal truth. Even as a SS… it’s an unconventional tactic for a 433, and one more suited for a diminutive playmaker like Trossard than a poacher like Havertz.
