    One of those vaults was from 2010. That's a lot of neglect in just 9 years.

    "abandonment of a corpse" is a federal law so the owner of this property or establishment should be held accountable. If not it would fall back on the stat to relocate the remains to an active cemetery.

      TheBlackKnight My thoughts exactly! How does a building deteriorate this badly in such a short amount of time. Surely it didn't look anything like this in 2012 when that person was entombed. If it was starting to look bad in 2012, why would anyone bury a family member there?

    Most likely the cemetery company went bankrupt and the money for maintenance and everything dried up. This is a good example of “ nothing lasts forever “. Besides, when the cemetery gets full and no one is buying any plots or crypts, the cash flow must stop. This is an eventuality for all cemeteries. Only cremations can go on forever.

  • @mikesuprys
    @mikesuprys Před 4 lety +5

    As a cemetery owner and manager here is some possible reasons why this happened. In some cases unscrupulous managers steal the money from the organization. On another note in most cases in older cemeteries grandad bought eight graves for fifty dollars. Many plots were sold like this. In 1940 this accounted for something in perpetual care however this is 2019. One percent interest on invested funds barely buys gas for mowers let alone maintenance costs. Some cemeteries also incur property taxes by the municipalities. A season of mowing in summer, which can get outrageous when there is a lot of rain followed by hot sunny days which Pa had a lot of. Then there’s winter maintenance. A major portion of cemeteries use the money from funerals as operating expense. Traditional burials are declining to cremation so When a cemetery charges $900 interment fees for a cremation and family members complain it’s expensive to dig a small hole one has to stop and think do you want the grass mowed and the grounds maintained. Another thing that happens is lawsuits incurred by cemeteries sometimes which are for frivolous reasons. I don’t know where this cemetery is located but this is an insight into some problems faced by cemeteries as they are very expensive to maintain.

    The sad truth is that a cemetery is real estate that has to be managed and maintained. This brings to mind a valuable point that nothing is forever. When the end of the family line comes for so many cemetery “residents,” there is no one left to make sure the graveyard is maintained in its entirety. This looks like abandoned property. Perhaps, before investing in burial space, it would be wise to check out the business background and ongoing management operations.

    I don't know anything about the laws of Pennsylvania, where this video was taken, but most states -- California certainly -- maintain trust funds or insurance provisions for perpetual maintenance of cemeteries and mausoleums. Authorities can and do step in when a facility becomes insolvent. This is sometimes administered by a state commission or agency, and if that's the case in PA then that agency should be notified about this terrible situation. If there is no such thing in PA, then concerned folks should raise hell with the County Board of Supervisors -- or whatever county elected officials are called in that state -- demanding action. (Or the city or town council if it's their jurisdiction). The bodies in the mausoleum should be removed to another facility until a new on-site facility can be built and the remainder of the cemetery should be repaired and start getting some regular maintenance. If I had a family member there, I'd be furious over this.

  • @georgestuffer6505

    There's not a lot you can do about the mausoleum take the remains out and bury them in open land in the grave yard. The township should step up and at least maintain the grass and other growth.

(St Peter's Church, Frimley, Surrey, U.K.) Now it's a nice and tidy place to visit. I know this, 'cos I looked it up in the parish records, that are on the church vestry shelf.

    The best way to be taken care of after you die is cremation and your ashes scattered in the ocean.
    Above ground mausoleums have to be the very worst way.
    Eventually everything that goes up is going to come down.
    Even being buried in the ground is a waste of real estate.
    Fifty years after someone is buried there is no one left to remember who they are.
    Everyone who knew them are dead.
    It's just a name on a stone that no one remembers, unless the person was famous.
