In the 2nd grade I had a teacher that had a tattoo on her arm. I asked her what it was and she replied "Its nothing" and pulled her sleeve down to cover it. As I grew older I remembered her and the tattoo. I learned what it meant and what it represented, 20 years later I searched for and found her and had a long talk about her memories of Auschwitz, we became friends. For that I will forever be thankful. It was an eye opener to talk to someone that lived through it. The stories she told me were terrible. But fascinating, How could a human live through what she did. In 1979 I went to Auschwitz (while in the Military) and it chilled me to the bone remembering my teacher and seeing what was on display. She has long since passed and I thank her very much for what she told me and taught me. Not only as a 2nd grader science teacher, but as a young adult. I will always remember her and what she taught me. She was a wonderful woman and a beloved friend. Her last words to me were "Never forget GOD does and will forever love you". She passed three month after i last saw her. I attended her funeral in 1991. RIP

I agree. During the 8th grade, specifically in a pre-internet, Midwestern history class, I asked about a missing topic - the holocaust. I'll never forget the instructor who looked me in the eye and said, "There's no room for fiction in my history class." Some years back I was doing some home maintenance for my best friend's father. It was Saturday, and he did not think it worthwhile to open his watch making and jewelry store in down town Melbourne. He suggested we break for lunch. He had his housekeeper cook up bacon and eggs.
As we began to eat I remarked "this is a bit odd, not only are we working on Sebat, we are eating bacon". He looked up at me and replied, "there are some things about being a Jew I take more seriously than others". He then looked me in the eyes with his 80 plus years of wisdom, and posed the unanswerable question. "Where was God for me when I was in Auschwitz".

Where they came from; their history, what countries did they live in, what was their culture all about, why they were so hated by the Nazis, what horrors did their specific group have to endure. We know nothing about them other than they were there by being hated by the Nazis. 🤔

I guess it was mostly just nazis and Kapos that visited those places and that ordinary jews were rare.
However, people do exploit other people when they live under dire conditions. It was not uncommon that old men raped young boys in the barracks of those camps. People stole food from each other. A holocaust survivor told the camera that one morning that he found out that someone had stolen his hat, so he then decided to steal someone elses hat. And that was a very serious situation, as the German guards usually would shoot anyone on the spot that showed up at a roll call without his hat on his head.
The Germans did what they could to make the jews fight each other instead of the Germans. And they were unfortunatly very succesful. Hungarian, Greek and Polish jews fought each other rather than cooperating. And many jews liked to work for the germans as kapos and got great rewards for it as better food, sex with sex slaves and such.
And some jews dared not to do anything else than to follow the orders of the germans, like helping the germans taking out all dead bodies from the gas chambers and burn them in ovens into ash and then use the ash to plant trees. If they refused the would gotten killed instantly, but by helping the germans did they make it much easier for them to kill millions of people.
