- Mary nailed it although it was not easy against Steffi. Mary beat Steffi for the second time in 1994. Their last meeting was a year later at the Paris Indoors. Since then they never met again at any tournament before Steffi retired.
Steffi 💖
Enjoy!
Fun Fact
Graf & Pierce played 4 times in 9 month with Pierce winning the bigger Matches (French Open & Championshop) and Graf winning in Montreal and Paris indoor in Feb 95.
After that they never ever played again...
Best video quality I’ve seen for this match. Thanks so much. Probably the best match between Steffi and Mary as all the others were very one sided.
Great to watch.
Never a dull moment with La Pierce. Gawd, she could be breathtaking.
When Mary was on, Graf had no chance
When Steffi was ON no one had chance
Seles owned her. Pierce thrashed her. The list goes on
@@yussepig6629both have losing records against Steffi. 😂😂
Graf vs Seles 10-5
Graf vs Pierce 4-2
It's clear from their h2h who owned whom.😏😏
@@yussepig6629: And you thrashed all the tennis players in the world, in your dreams 😂😂😂😂I believe you were Graf's competitor at some point, and she thrashed you every time both of you play against each other and your jealousy does all the talking everywhere. Poor you!! The history books and records say it all and the problem for you is that you can't change them👎There is a name of an animal in your user ID; that is quite appropriate, I must admit.Get a life dude. Steffi played her part in the world of tennis, and they have been registered in the history books in golden letters. Come out of the obsession you have for her and lead a healthy life.
@@rajusaha855 you’re obviously responding to a previous comment which was made with absolutely no basis as Pierce most assuredly did not own Graf. Thank you for injecting some reasonableness into the comment section.
I’ll add my part and say I’m a huge fan of both Seles and Graf. Neither owned the other, that’s what made their matches so amazing. Both were great champions with amazing strengths. Even despite the terrible crime that was done to Seles, and the unfairness of it, it is fair to say that their matches were always a treat for us spectators-I miss their on-court rivalry terribly.
Mary Pierce had many strengths, but in my opinion she was never on par with Graf/Seles. On a really good day Pierce could beat either one (and that’s saying something as they were great champions), but generally speaking Graf/Seles were able to beat Pierce and do so handily.
Like l mentioned earlier with another match involving Mary Pierce if the other player is trying to exclusively slice on the backhand side it's going to be tough.
Mary Pierce like many had several issues , injuries and problems that got in the way of her success. But when she was clicking it was scary.
A lot of people questioned why Steffi played this tournament, given that she hadn't played since the US Open and wouldn't play again until February the following year.
Agree....I guess she felt ready and wanted to defend her title and no.1 ranking
Mary's celebration was a bit OTT.
@@Calicokit101I think Mary really loved playing this tournament. If I remember right she got to two finals. Losing to Mauresmo and Novotna.
Didn’t Steffi play Mary in the final of Gaz de France in Feb? Whooped her too…
She did look a bit stiff. You can see it in her walk. However, Mary sounded Graf's forehand into submission like she did at the French Open. Mary was one of the few at time who could out-hit Graf. Seles being the other, of course. Maybe Capriati on a good day. Navratilova was just plain athletic enough to worry Steffi as well.
So so good from Mary, backing up the french win earlier that year. She could look so flat and slow on court on a bad day eg all those wimbledon flameouts or the Australian final against hingis but when she was moving well and playing intensely like here or later in 2000/2005 she was incredible.
She really flamed out against Hingis in 1997. I never understood why she often struggled against Hingis. She had a weak serve and didn't hit groundstrokes with much authority.
@@NotSettlingForSecondBestHingis was a master a moving slow players around (see Seles too). She also took the ball very early (robbing opponents of time) and had great variety. Tough match up for Mary and Monica.
When Mary was on, her groundstrokes were scarily good. A lot of natural power and fast-twitch firepower in her shoulders...probably one of best ball strikers of all time. The only ones I've seen with kind of raw power combined with supreme ball striking are Serena and Sabalenka.
Graf stationed on the baseline morning, noon and night, no wonder she lost.
ahmmm..seles is the only one that can trash graf, vicario, pierce, sabatini, navratilova, evert, hingis, sharapova, serena, venus etc. If not for gunther parche attempted murder killing, seles is the real GOAT. Period. Full stop.
😂
When Mary was on, Steffi couldn’t beat her.
When Steffi was on, nobody could beat her.
@@rajusaha855 Not true. She just had no competition for majority of her career.
@@tambam6744 oh so who had competition?? You mean near prime Martina, peak Seles, ASV, Sabatini, Martinez, Capriati, Pierce, Novotna, Hingis, Davenport were not good competition 🤔🤔. Oh do you want to say she never faced peak Wozniacki, Safina, Jankovic, Ivanovic or Radwanska types of players in her career lmao😂😂. According to elo rating it's Steffi who faced toughest opponent not Martina not Serena.
@@tambam6744 So then you agree that nobody could beat her? lol. I love the folks that say Graf isn't the GOAT because she had no competition. But that's exactly why she is. Because no one could compete with her. Because she was so much better than everyone she played against.
@@jeremyredding2251OH MY GOD, STEFFI GUNTHER PARCHE GRAF WON G.S. BECAUSE HER DERANGED FAN STABBED "THE" REIGNING & CURRENT WORLD NO. 1 SELES
Mary made it look easy
Usually Steffi owned Pierce.
Two third of their matches were easy two-setters for Steffi.
