      Yes, I recently watched a tutorial explaining how to use AE for projection mapping but my question is, could you do a tutorial using a set of round cakes for mapping in after effects? Thanks once again

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  Před 4 lety +1

      @@babayodamisa2655 I could. But even though I created this tutorial on how to do projection mapping in After Effects, it was more of an exploration of one of its lesser known uses - After Effects is not really an application designed for projection mapping. If you are serious about mapping a cake, round or otherwise, I would recommend using proper video mapping software. I have tutorials on MadMapper and Resolume (more applications to be covered soon) and I'll be releasing tutorials on how to map a round cake with those. Watch this space!

      Luma Bakery I don’t have any tutorial requests that your other videos haven’t already covered lol. I’m very much a novice when it comes to projection mapping, but I’m learning a lot from your video tutorials and watching your workflow. Madmapper’s tutorials are pretty shallow and relatively unhelpful compared to yours, so I’m here to watch whatever you’re willing to teach.

    Hi I just got into projection mapping and I find it fascinating, I've seen some of your tutorials which are very straight forward and easy to understand.
    I started with mapmap for pc and it was buggy and a pain to use.
    Madmapper's demo was fun and I've lerned some stuff, but in order to make custom animations you have to import from other softwares?
    After Effects sounds like a winner to me if you can do the mapping plus animation as well. At first sight seems a bit complicated though.
    Are there other softwares which do both mapping and animations which might be better than After Effects?
    Thank you for your tutorials and keep up the good work.

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  Před 3 lety +3

      This tutorial shows a fun way of using After Effects for mapping, but mapping is not something AE is geared towards - it's animating software. It's complicated because it's very powerful. You can't' have it both ways. MadMapper, on the other hand, is purely for mapping and does it very well. But yes, you would have to make your animations elsewhere. Maybe download a demo of Resolume and have a look at that? But to be honest, I think you should make your peace with the idea of having to make nice, custom animations in a different piece of software to the one you use for mapping.

      I'm thinking this would be possible with a decent media player. About £50 in UK. It's the exact thing I'm doing for a multi site light projection show for my town this Christmas. The only caveat I would say is that you would probably need to do the calibration on site, rather than at home. However you may have a better idea that you can do it at home if you can work out the size of the target surface and distance/angle of projector in another programme such as Blender. I'm no expert just beginning with Blender/After Effects.

      Thank you very much. I actually missed that part of your video and found out how to do it. I do appreciate that very much. I've been using Resolume Arena for so long and wanted to try something new in our new 103 year old home. You know something special to go with the history of the home. I tried to follow your tutorials regarding animating videos and doing some really cools effects. I then went outside to put it on my projector and it was a flop. Everything came out a little distorted but my problem is, my phone is hd with huge pixels and my projector is ultra short throw 1280x720. I would love to get a 1920x1080 projector but the prices and throw distance means I would have to project from my neighbors yard across the street LOL. Can you recommend another program you have used in the past or current to create the same type of animation you do on your house? @@michaelcarden1198 I use After Effects mainly for 2d stuff and Cinema 4d for 3d. That reference you gave uses some 3d for the big structural illusions and has edited them cleverly with other video assets. Maybe check out DaVinci Resolve as a free place to start to cut your teeth on editing/animating (in Fusion). Great tutorial! I've already completed this using your guide, and now have a clear photo for mapping. I then went into After Effects and created masks against that photo for the surfaces I want to project onto. Now, I'm a little stuck. Is there a simple process for dragging/dropping videos into After Effects so that they automatically take on the shape of the mask? For example, projecting at an angle across the garage door, I have an irregular shaped rectangle mask due to the perspective. If I add a video to play against that garage door, is there a simple way to drop that video into the masked area and have the irregular shape applied automatically? Thanks very much!

      You should like into the Power Pin effect. You can copy/paste it on other media. Or you could pre-comp parts of the show and then power pin the pre-comp. That is one of the disadvantages of the outline method - you have to design to the baked-in perspective - and one of the reasons I use the orthographic method (see my 1-5 tutorial series on house mapping)

    • @damoncarpenter6641
      @damoncarpenter6641 Před 2 lety

      @@LumaBox Outstanding advice! I've already gone through your orthographic tutorials, and I hope to use that next year after I get a nicer projector. In the meantime, I wanted to just throw some fun videos on the garage door for this Christmas season. Your suggestion about the Power Pin effect was absolutely spot-on. I watched two or three tutorials online for how to use that tool, and I had a new mask setup with that effect applied in no time. Now, I can drag/drop a video into the comp, copy/paste the Power Pin effect onto that video, make sure it's aligned to the garage door mask, and Bob's your uncle. I can now mass-produce as many videos as I like with just a few keystrokes and mouse-clicks. And all thanks to you generous and helpful advice. KUDOS and MANY THANKS!

    What are the advantages of using mad mapper? I mean if you dont want to have live perfomrnace but just render out the final maping why use Mad Mapper? any benefits?

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  Před 2 lety +1

      If you’re interested in exporting the final mapping, MadMapper makes the most sense alongside their MiniMad bit of hardware - basically their proprietary media player out of which you can output your exported mapping show. Otherwise, it is hard to export your mapping except through some cowboy method like screen capture. I personally like MadMapper because it’s very user friendly, but I’m mainly doing one-off shows where it’s ok to run it off my laptop, not long-term installations where I’d probably want a media server

    Would you say resolume is better for long running projections for a show or after effects? I’ve encountered issues with resolume in terms of syncing.
    Although BPM in Resolume is good for syncing, it completely messes up the speeds of my videos to audio. While Timeline syncs them up nicely, after a while (say, an hour) they end up out of sync despite being exactly the same in duration timecode.

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  Před 3 lety

      I wouldn't run a long show through AE. If the video is designed to match to the audio then you shouldn't enable additional syncing functions in Resolume (like BPM sync). Or have I misunderstood your issue? Maybe export your video with an audio channel (containing your music) rather than bringing them in as two separate pieces of media?

    Thank you for the tutorial it I think it has confirmed to me that I can use After Effects as projection mapping see below.
    I'm a musician and I'm creating a show based on projection mapping...so that the animations interact with the music and my performance. In order to do this, I intend to film myself (with green screen and music backing track) and use that as the timeline of the project...then create animations around the filmed performance. After they are created I intend to remove the initial performance and then project the animations using a projector (having masked my initial performance which I will recreate live along with some live music over the back track)...does this make sense to you?
