Janek and Honza would protest the recommendation of trdelnik.
But only in Prague :) Everywhere else it has a decent price , and doesn't come with ice cream, which is a crazy combination created only recently..
They would even revolt 😅

I'm surprised you didn't mention svíčková, which is one of the most famous signature dishes of the Czech cuisine.
Prague was the first foreign city I has flown too, so it will always have a special place in my heart.
my paternal side is Czech..and I grew up with roast pork,dumplings,saurkraut,cerny kuba(a barley dish) and, of course Kolachy.Those are MY comfort foods.
Czech Republic is basically the Mecca of beer.

Was just in prague, and I definitely agree with this list! I would suggest though for everyone to stay away from old Town square when trying to eat out because the restaurants are overpriced and the food isn't as good
Pilsner Urquell is delicious in Prague but also try other beers too.

Pork knee was unbelievable. There is a pub by right by the opera
House on the east side of the most legii bridge that I ate that at. Wiener snitzal was good to. Progue is simply amazing and 1 of my favorite cities of all time.

Haha. Mark always mentions the Czech duck...wish I would have tried it when I visited. I really enjoyed the koleno (pork knuckle) and guláš with bread dumplings (shown @3:03) as well as carp but I visited at Christmas when it's everywhere. Don't recall many vegetables but I really wasn't looking. 😀👍
yeah. aside from the cabbage varieties sometimes veggies can be a bit less prominent on the plate :)

Wolters World spinach is quite popular. I ate buttered spinach with roast rabbit at Klášterní šenk - utterly transcendent. One of the best meals I ate and I spent two and a half weeks in Czechia.
That's it! I'm going to put Prague on my list of places to visit in the near future. Mark, I've seen your previous videos about Prague and those videos created an interest for me but this food video just put it over the top.

Hi Mark, enjoy your stay in Czech republic :), hope you will visit other places too, we have plenty other beautiful towns. As you said you didn't like the wine, I can reccomend you visiting us here in Spring or Summer for bike trip around Morava(Pálava region), nice nature, every few kms village with nice and coozy wine cellar to sit down or lake to swim in.

Cerny Pivo!! A must try, smaller towns like Brno or even villages are much cheaper than Prague, but Prague is beautiful. The fried cheese is good, but heavy, dumplings are amazing, as is the beef and pork. Desert, the crepes with ice cream are amazing. I loved the coffee with Viennese cream, kava videnska??
I’m going to Prague in December, and I anticipate living on duck and dumplings!
I loved it. One of my favorite cities of all time. The apple grove on the west side of the most legii bridge has nice views of the city. The castle and church on the bluff are really pretty. The food is very good. The beer is good. The Czechs are more outgoing as far as talking to tourist then other places in some other Europe counties. Bring walking shoes. They have day trips to some really pretty castles which is what Czech is know for besides spires.

The people from the Czech Republic do not like the trdelnik (sp?) stands as they are not from the Czech Republic.
It's good, but it's ridiculous that it's sold as "traditional Czech dessert" when it was brought here only in 1990's. (It's from Hungary.) Some of the more traditional desserts, like strudel or crepes or profiteroles (served under the name větrník), also aren't from Czechia, but they've been eaten here at least since 19th century.
I have also a little recommendation for a ver unique restaurant: Vytopna.
It is quite funny, because the drinks are delivered by a little train to each table. I've been with my family a few times to Prague and eating out there is just a must-do for us because we always have such a great time there.
The food is also quite good, however if you want some nice and fine Czech food, I wouldn't go there. It's more of a lunch place, if you know what I mean.

The duck, chicken, dumplings, potatoes and soups that I had in Prague 2 years ago in August were fantastically filling when my family and I went there. Of course, the pivo (beer) there was certainly a fantastic edition to the meals as well. I even ate some Vietnamese food one night there that was fantastic and the first night the train pulled into Prague, I ate stellar Argentinian barbecued cuisine while a band played South American folk songs...was totally fantastic, and the service is totally improving since we were in the tourist areas! We recreated the duck and dumplings at home during the Christmas holidays and I still enjoyed it tremendously. Great video, Mark!

Its the czech version of a crepe but with vanilla creme and a little bit thicker and its so delicious!
In the meat category you wanna try Gulas. That's a sauce wth meat pork and paprica served with potatoes.

@@blub4108 The original guláš is Hungarian and comes with white bread. The Czech version is different and comes with dumplings.

As an non-alcoholic alternative to beer you should try the traditional soda, Kofola. It’s like a herby cola invented in the late 1950s by Zdeněk Blažek, a scientist who had been commissioned by the state to create an alternative to Us colas, using ingredients available in Czechoslovakia.
Any recommendations on the train system in central europe? Going from Krakow to Prague to Berlin.
Did you come up with a solution? I'm trying to figure out that exact route too, in terms of interrailing. It seems like krakow is hard to get to, the other locations I've looked at for my route has been no problem at all

Also, I found if you need really fast food, go to the beer halls. They generally have sausages and kraut ready to eat with beer.
I also found many fancy absentheries. There is a cool absynthe culture there with making of the cocktails almost like show performance.
this is true with something quick. i thought about the absynthe on the list, but felt the other digestive was a better drink for all the heavy foods.
Watch out for restaurants using store bought dumplings, usually not a great sign. You deserve those in house made dumplings yo!
If you visit Prague try the small restaurant "U Magistra Kelly"! Fantastic location!

What to eat in Prague? The fried cheese is very touristy. lol If you're in old town square... Go to Restaurant White Horse. They'll give you a better meal.

Trdelník is actually slovak food. It is originally from Skalica. Czechs kind of appropriated it, but it is not as good as the original slovak one ^_^ (and also originally it is not sold with cream or even ice-cream (why Czechs?!), as they do some places in CR)
It is being sold with ice cream even in Bratislava.. weird!
I thought, they were actually from Romania.
This is one reason, why I like to live in eastern europe because here in every country we have some foods, what are almost exactly the same everywhere, and everyone claims that that food originated in their country. For example in hungary trdelnik is called kürtőskalács (and of course many say that this is an original hungarian food), but I could list many other foods (gulas-gulyás, nokedli-halusky) :)
Hungarians claim its their food and both Czechs and Slovaks took it. For tourists, I would not recommend getting into this argument unless you know martial arts.
Don't worry Niky, we tell everyone it's Slovak, only street vendors sell it as Czech. -.-

I love Prague but there are few vegetarian options in Czech restaurants. Try Country Life in the city centre which is a cheap vegetarian restaurant otherwise stick to Italian and Indian cuisine.
Do not buy fried cheese in the street buffets.. Chances it will be good are slim. Buy it in a restaurant.

hey JOhnny. i usually dont' putthe exact price down as that is somehting that changes so quickly and so often and with exchange rates, that i try to focus on the general feel and needs.

Gulash is Hungarian food, but Czech gulash is diferent.

Trdelnik is a tourist trap and not traditional. Big Mac is more traditional Czech food than touristtrapnik

trdlo or tdelnik is not Czech. Check out chlebicky (open sandwiches), kremrolle, etc. Go to a pekárna or a cukrarna, a real street market, for the real czech stuff. And all those with poppy seeds on top, medovnik (honey cake, filling and good), cakes with fruits on top...
Garlic soup :) svicková na smetane, fried cheese, duck, pork knee, trout, ribs....
and get out of the city centre to eat or you will be robbed :)
As native Prague citizen I must say that - Trdelník is total bullshit, it has nothing to do with Czech history unlike Skalický Trdelnik, that is made in Slovakia and is related to their history and is much more cheaper / tastier
