I went to three of these restaurants on our trip to Prague in September. I took a foodie tour with Taste of Prague and they took us to Lokal and Kantyna. We went to Tiskarna on our own. All were good, but the best restaurant I've been to in Prague was one that we went to in 2019. It was Restaurace U Bansethu in Prague 4. I had duck there that was so good. We were in Paris a couple of weeks later and the French version, canard confit, didn't even come close.

Seeing the dumplings uncut gave me an "ah ha" moment. The first time I had a dish with dumplings, I was like, "where's the dumplings? and why are there slices of bread?"
    Haha, makes sense now.

As a Hungarian, I protest about the 'goulash'. This is a soup whose name comes from the Hungarian word "gulya" (=herd). Real goulash is made only from beef.

Yes they had a beef goulash, and in Czech/Moravian/Silesian part of the Czech Republic it always come as a beef with goulash sauce. There is also goulash soup, which is completely different from this goulash with dumplings.

GREAT STUFF RPGs!!! I am looking at your bills at the end of each segment. Last night my wife and I went to Beef o" Brady's here in Lake Jackson Texas. It is a chain of inexpensive restaurants here in the US, they are not nor do they pretend to be 5 star but tasty for a quick meal. Our bill was the equivalent of about 40 euro. This is why Americans think Prague is such a great value. To eat a a true 5 stare here in the Houston area, dinner for two could easily be 150 euro.

I go to Prague up to 4 times a year sometimes, because I love the city and the country (yes, I do travel around as well) and one of the things that pull me back to Prague (and Brno) are the excellent, truly excellent vegan restaurants, bistros and other likewise options. I think this is a huge selling point and it's one of the first things I mention when people ask me why I go to Prague so often. It would be great if you could highlight this aspect of Prague/Czechia as well sometime.

Another great video. Is the price of beer still capped? When I first went to Prague in 1998, three of us ate at a local restaurant. Our total bill was 280 kr with an exchange rate of 38 kr to the dollar. The most expensive item was the 7 oz bottle of Coca Cola which was twice the price of a half liter of beer. The waiter told us the reason was there was a maximum price they were allowed to charge. The food was amazing especially for the price. I have returned several times since, but haven't been back since 2010. Keep up the great work!

Today's exchange is 22 crowns per dolar and prices went dramatically up. In Y2000 I was drinking beer in pubs for 20 crowns/0.5L, now is ~50. Still is possible to buy bottle beer in supermarket for 16 - 26 crowns.

Stars mean nothing to me. My favorite Czech food restaurants are Lokal, Plzenska, Cerveny Jelen, Kolkovna. All are cheap, have good food and portion sizes and most importantly, have tank Pilsner. For steak, Gran Fierro. For a traditional pub with good food, and tank Pilsner, Konvikt.

Depends on whether you mean rich locals, upper middle class or lower middle class. These restaurants are I would say more for middle or upper middle class and locals actually eat there. There are hundreds of restaurants to choose from. Go to more local areas like Karlin, Vinohrady or Holesovice to find non-touristy restaurants.

Thanks Valery on a good rundown on these restaurants. But I don't understand the title "I Tested 5-Star Restaurants in Prague". I don't think you mean they are all awarded 5 stars. So why the inclusion of the word Star?. And I do understand that you reviewed 5 restaurants. Of these I have only been to Lokal in Dlouha street. It quickly became my favourite. What I think is extremely overrated is the tasteless dumplings which I had in other restaurants-but never again. They are nothing more than flour, yeast, egg and salt and then boiled or steamed. If it was baked most other countries would call it bread!. And it is a ripoff which covers half the plate and the other half is a few small pieces of meat floating in an ocean of sauce or gravy costing up to CZK 200. OUCH!!
Being an Australian it is sad that I haven't been to Prague (or Warsaw) since just before Covid arrived to spoil travel. I hope to return - and visit Lokal.

Thank you so much for this. I was in Prague for two and a half weeks in October and stayed in one of the hotels on your recommendation list, Hotel Wallenstein in Mala Strana. It was great that your video helped me decide which part of two to be in and your list gives recommendations. .
Velkopřevorský Mlýn on a night I thought they were doing a French duck breast was close to my best meal in Prague or anywhere. It was one of the best meals of my life. I sat outside, drank wine, sat on chairs padded with sheep skin. The place was filled with happy people. The only downside was the bad sound system playing some old French popular tunes. However, I couldn’t wait to go back and did about 10 days later. The hotel looked at me funny when I asked them to call to see if they could fit me in and to ask if they had duck on the menu. Yes. They had duck but only duck leg and they were not busy. I got a taxi so I wouldn’t get lost getting there and it was a colder, drizzly night. I was the only person in the place when I arrived which may have been around 8:30 or 9 pm on a Thursday. The duck leg was not bad but disappointing (small) in comparison to the large meaty breast from the week before. Because no one was there, the waitress/chef and I talked a bit. She didn’t know what I was talking about when I described the first meal I had there, that they only served French wine that evening or who the male chef was French or pretending to be. This is as if I had experienced an alternate universe or had time/place travelled. I know I was in the same place because I had photographed everything and had the credit card receipt.
A friend treated me to dinner with his convention crowd at George’s Steakhouse. It is most definitely five stars for food, atmosphere, service and ambience. It was unbelievable! The meal was flawless in every respect. I would have never chosen this place in another country because why would anyone want to go to an American steakhouse in Europe? My friend from college who I have known for 40 years was in Prague the same time with me and invited me to join the convention friends for dinner on a Sunday evening. His friends were from the USA, Europe and Asia. Most of the meat (you choose the type of beef and cut) comes from the USA but they have Czech beef and Czech wine. I made it a point to try to drink Czech wine everywhere I went but my friend wanted California so we had bottles from both countries. George’s probably caters to business men on expense accounts and I did not stay for dessert so I have no idea what that meal cost for twelve people but I can imagine it was crazy.
The best Czech meal lunch I had was at a Pauseteria U radnice 11/4 Staroměstské náměstí, It is in a beautiful shopping area, a mall, not far from the entrance. I ordered the pork knuckle. IT WAS SO GOOD! It was also more food than I could handle for lunch but I hadn’t had dinner the night before and missed the huge breakfast buffet at the hotel so I was really hungry. It was inexpensive. The place is busy at lunchtime, so it took a while to be waited on or even acknowledged. I am so glad I waited. It was enough food for two meals and it was the best pork meal I had in Prague. Once the waitress got my order, I had attention. The chef even came out to talk to me for some reason. I am sure I made it clear I really enjoyed the food. Maybe not may older women from the USA order pork knuckle. Maybe I ate as if I hadn’t eaten in two days. No matter. It is not fancy place for a date but it is definitely a nice place for a meal before a movie.
From my hotel, I looked up at the castle every night and wanted to go to that restaurant on the hill but didn't ask hotel staff to tell me what it was until I had only a few nights left and those were filled with opera. I will go to Kuchyna when I return.
I went into Kantyna while wandering to look around but decided to return later but I hadn’t written down the address or name. Too bad. It has every hallmark of a first-rate kitchen and ingredients though I wasn’t impressed with all of the high barstool-type chairs. No one at my advanced age wants to sit that high up but I think there were regular chair options if my memory is correct. I despise those highchairs and cannot un derstand why people think they are hip.
An honorable mention should go to Restaurant U Schnellu, Tomášská 27/2 in Mala Strana. This is a restaurant in the U Schnellu Hotel. I initially went there because it is around the corner from my hotel, but I returned two more times. It has prix fixed meal combinations, so you don’t have to make a lot of decisions from appetizer through dessert, but you can order items individually. They serve very good traditional Czech food. The goulash as very good as was roast pork with dumplings. The service is a bit uneven and the first time I went there they said they didn’t accept credit cards, but they do, I just had to pay through the hotel’s cashier. This wasn’t an issue the next two times.
