I read Sidney’s autobiography back in 1981 and he said that while he was thrilled to be in a movie with Tracey and Hepburn, he was so nervous and overwhelmed that he kept flubbing his lines. In desperation he went to the director (Stanley Kramer, I think) for help and it was decided that he-Stanley-would read the parts of the future in-laws opposite Sidney, then the separate scenes were spliced together. Poitier made so many good movies during that decade (1960s) and he’s still alive and kicking at 91.

That's because in every generation the struggle is different and it's always based on region as well as time period. Your children will struggle in many ways theirs would not because the lines are as defined as they used to be. That makes things hard to determine if you are being discriminated against or not.

His distinctive movements, pauses and purposeful gestures, the clenched fist, his walk, all his way of expressing intensely felt, fenuine emotions. Everything he does on screen is profoundly experienced by him. He takes the art of performance to another level of creativity without it being affected.

So much better than the Ashton Kutcher/Bernie Mac remake. That film was a missed opportunity.
This film was made at a time when African and White relationship were really looked down upon.
where as the remake was made when African White couples are not unusual, sure you still have prejudices but not to the same extent as in the 50s & 60s.
The remake should have gone with a white girl and a Sikh/Hindu/Muslim man or the other way around or even a different inter-racial couple or even a homosexual relationship in cultures and religions which prohibit them and shown the ignorances and prejudices. and how it affects people.

R.I.P Mr. Poitier, loved your movies ever since I saw you in " To Sir with Love " in the 60's. May our lord and Savior Jesus Christ ✝️ continue to comfort your family and friends. 🙏

jfulbright, you are right about that aspect.
That was always the rap on this film. Poitier's character is a bit too contrived and "too good to be true" perfect. This does tend to undermine the racial-equality message somewhat. Still a great film, but I always thought the same year's "In the Heat of the Night" was a much more multi-layered (though much grittier) portrayal of the 60s racism issue.

It was groundbreaking for its time, when many white people in the US couldn’t imagine a black doctor, scholar, or hero. You can’t look back after 45 years and wonder why it wasn’t like today - why people couldn’t instantly just change their expectations. That’s not the way it works. Alas.

Forty years later, in many ways, in many places in this country, we are still having the same discussion. The cold facts are these - this country can no longer afford to be divided against itself. It's time - as this movie shows, far past time that we move on.

He is foreseeing the World his Children (i.e. my Parents) will live in, having the
same dream Martin King Jr. had. With the amount of segregation, & lack of
opportunities a lot of my Grandparents faced, they fought really hard & stood their
ground to get the kind of chances we are now enjoying.

I love this movie, but one thing I enjoy is the set design and the background paintings that were created the to show San Francisco and the Bay. Hollywood doesn't use them anymore and they are a words of art that are used once. I'm sure the art department worked from photographs.
