I rarely see something that makes sense for organizing... too expensive, too time-consuming, too difficult to aquire, doesn't work (wasted money)... but this is GOOD! I love that it works for my art space and my woodworking. Thank you! Can't wait to implement this.

I just said the same thing about my art studio! I have several things that get bent and unusable if not stored flat. I keep a mish mash of leftover crafting items I rarely use in my drawers. This storage solution will free them up so I can get to my smaller art supplies.

Thanx for sharing! Unfortunately my husband passed away and couple of months ago. He was just this side of a horder. I was able to empty 3 storage units. That was many days of manual labor and $3,000 dollars to pay for labor and hauling. Now I’m down to 2 bedrooms and 2 attics. The consolation prize for me is I now have a craft room that is the size of 2 bedrooms all to myself. Your channel has given so many great ideas and has helped me to stay out of depression land. I taught math and we had lots of small manipulatives. I stored them in plastic bags and would put a pinhole in each bag. That way when the kids sealed them, they could press out the air. Since we’re not storing food, the little pinhole doesn’t make a difference in keeping freshness. But it makes it so easy to press out that last bit of air.

I love how you say, “I find value in them (the little random things)”. Every organizer I’ve ever used does not understand that everything has value!!! They always make me pare things down!!
I keep things because I know I’ll be able to use them someday. Having them organized makes it so much easier to find when I do need them.
Every organizer tells me something stupid like, with all the instruction booklets I keep for things I still have, have you ever used them, then you don’t need them. That’s why you have them for when you need them.
    Thank you so much!!!❤

Put all your manuals in bags with any tools or attachments. Write with a marker what appliances it’s for and hang them on a hook in a closet.

I purchased the bigger Rubbermaid tubs to organize and store my fabrics. I rolled each piece and placed them in the containers on-end.
That way they stayed relatively wrinkle free, and I could easily see what fabric I had, and be able to pretty much have an idea of how long the piece was, due to the diameter of it. I started sewing at age 8, and I am now 62! could never resist a good fabric close-out!😂

This is amazing, Norrine; probably the most helpful video of yours for me yet. I"m a miniaturist, which is a little (literally) bit of EVERY craft, so I have mountains of supplies, and often really tiny quantities of them. I've saved all the tiny ziploc bags that kit components come in, as well as every small, sturdy box that comes my way, as they're always useful. Now I know how to really maximise their usefulness. It was a real 'a-ha!' moment for me watching this video; thanks SO much for sharing. It's going to make such a huge difference!

I just added miniatures to my list of 70 other hobbies. I need someone to save me from myself, lol.
Categorization is often where I fall apart. I either get too broad, too detailed, or confused because should I put the watercolor pencils with the pencils or the watercolors? What about the watercolor markers? Do the pastel pencils go with the pencils or the pastels? Now, do I put my miniature paints with my other acrylic paints or with my miniatures because that's the only thing I use them with?

    • @Jacqueline-ff2rt
      @Jacqueline-ff2rt Před 4 měsíci +4

@@jakobozias7613 , welcome to our wonderful tiny world! It really is the most rewarding hobby, and also the most challenging and frustrating, of every hobby I have ever tried. The great thing is that all the crafts I tried and then abandoned all 'came back' in miniature, so I've stuck with this one hobby for more than 20 years - which is really every art and craft shrunk down - and have never been bored of crafts again; there is always something new to learn. The downside is the extreme mess and the Mount Everest quantity of supplies you end up with - it really is next-level. I strongly recommend keeping all of your acrylic paints together; it won't be long until every paint you have, as well as every other material and tool, is co-opted for your miniatures. With things like your watercolour pencils, think about the outcome you're aiming for - mine are with my watercolours, as I will go to them when I want to produce something that looks like a watercolour painting. (It may make more sense to you to organise by process - watercolour pencils are for 'drawing', so then they'd go with the pencils). Know that there may be a big learning curve with everything you try - most people find scaling down adds another layer of difficulty. Stick with it. Everyone works out their strengths and discovers 'fakery' solutions for what they cannot do. Maybe you'll try metalwork, find that you're hopeless and you hate it, so then you learn how to fake metal work convincingly with polymer clay, you swap your leftover metal for more clay with a mini metalworker, and keep your metalwork tools since they work great with clay. It really is the hobby that no one ever, truly masters - and for me, that's what is so great about it!

@@jakobozias7613 As to your second paragraph, I have what I call my “Color Cart”. Anything to do with adding color to a project is in there. That said, I must confess I’m a paper crafter, so I don’t have cans of spray paint, or such large items. But A L L things (ie., inks, pencils of ALL kinds, markers, etc.) to do with coloring goes into that cart. This thing is on wheels because I craft at my kitchen counter. Recently, I DID move my embossing powders to a separate box which also now houses my heat gun, but mostly because the heat gun was too big to fit in the section with the powders, which I required, and really is a separate kind of thing. Also, except for the 3 rolls of the kinds of runner tape I’m currently using, every other container, roll, bottle, or hangcard bearing “Adherence” of ANY manner is in a different cart in a drawer, and including rubber bands & hair bands, velcro strips, fabric glue, and duck tape!! I guess the point I’m making is: If you have to spend time trying to figure out just where your head was the day you were determining where something ought to reside, that’s time lost to the Creativity Killer!! If you’re looking to put color to paper (Or outside on YOUR DRIVEWAY!!) just make sure ANYTHING is to hand to get it done NOW!!

My cat for some reason loves them, she steals them frequently from my studio and brings them to me in my bedroom. Sometimes they aren't empty, either.

Your so right about getting the air out of the ziplock bags. I learned that trick when we started using backpacks instead of suitcases to travel to Europe. I used two gallon sized ziplock for our clothes. Now we use carry on suitcases and packing cubes

I am a quilter and bag maker so I have amazingly large amounts of cotton fabric scraps. My system is this I keep anything over 1 inch wide in top drawer of my cart. Next drawer is 2-4"wide next drawer is 5" squares. Next one is 10" squares then WIPs (work in progress) and orphan blocks and last drawer is flannel scraps of all sizes. Here is the best trick though. When a drawer is full USE IT! I will use the 5 or 10 inch squares a s backing and sew down all the strips wither diagonal or crazy quilting style. Into the WIP/orphan drawer. When it wont close I sew tham all together and have a scrap quilt. I also TRY not to develop a 'stash' of fabrics. Meaning I buy what I need and use what I buy for the most part. TFS the baggie trick. I have been doing that but instead of putting in a box I was hanging on my pegboard. Now that is full of zipper bags hahahaha. Off to get some boxes!

Thank you, Norrine. These ideas solve my how-to-store bits and pieces issues. I finally got a craft/sewing room/office but it’s been too disorganized to use. Health and other issues turned it into a storage room. When I finally put things in boxes, it took so long to find the things I needed that I rarely had time to make anything. I’m looking forward to finishing my reorganizing so I can actually finish some projects.

Like you put in the square book cases... anyway I tried to use the plastic labels that clip on them ... well they wouldn't stay on . Everytime I got one off the shelf . The tag would fall off . So i.used a chalk pen and wrote directly on the tote !!! And it will wipe off with a wet towel and some soap !!!

😢Norrine, I love this idea! A couple of years ago I developed the same system for my craft room. I make cards, and I use die cuts A LOT, which results in lots of scraps or odd shaped paper. Not wanting to throw away anything I could use in another progect, I decided to separate my "scraps" into color categories, put each color in a ziplock, and file them in a pretty lidded box. This method has saved me so much time and keeps my craft room tidy. Thanks for sharing this tip.❤

I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes 3 drawer dresser on sale to use as a gift wrapping station in my dining room. In the deep bottom drawer I gathered all my gift bags and tissue paper. I got a bunch of Dollar Tree napkin holders to hold the bags upright on their sides by color and did the same with tissue paper. Bags and flat boxes too tall to store upright lay flat in the space between the other bags and tissue. In the middle drawer I got two of the small wire kitchen shelves from Dollar Tree, turned upside down to corral rolls of wrapping paper. Christmas wrap is in one and other occasions and generic paper in the other. The top drawer has curl sheet ribbon, tapes, glue, my flat Cricut cutting board and cutting/scoring accessories and scissors. I used some of the hardware boxes that were part of the IKEA packaging to make ribbon dispensers with a hole punch on the side to thread the ribbon through. The top is the perfect height and size to wrap presents without have to bend over like I did at the dining room table. And now everything is together in one spot instead of scattered all over two floors of the house! I am in the process of adding shelves above it to hold my photo boxes that contain spools of cloth ribbon sorted by color and floral/foliage picks. So happy with how it’s turned out so far!

You are a woman after my own heart.❤ But I am afraid that my items are past the bin stage, I have plastic drawer systems from Walmart for some of my treasures. One drawer for “natural stuff”, one for plastic, another for metal, one for electronics, etc. It did reach a point where I had to split the “natural” items into wood pieces, and cork and pine cones etc. You have inspired me to take a closer look at the wasted space and the frequency of use for my stashes. I usually have a several different projects on the go, so I need to keep my limited workspace organized. One example, I use oversize (for toys) storage bags from the dollar store to hold the fabric, pattern and other supplies when I am sewing. I also save the rigid salad containers as a cheap supply of clear bins. Sorry for rattling on, I was so excited to discover a like minded person. My friends and family may make fun of me, I feel vindicated. 😂

New Subbie here. I am an organizer through and through. Paper Crafting, mixed media and junk journals are my craft. I use a drawer system in a similar way. I like the 12 x 12, three drawer unit you can get from Walmart. Like items in each drawer. Smaller containers inside each drawer to separate items (Intuition brand soap/razor has the cutest little container the refill soap/razors comes in.) Most things I have a lot of or they are too bulky for baggies. I have used a baggie system in a similar manner before but your tips will help to make that system even better. I had to laugh when you were sucking the air out…I do that anytime I use a baggie. Glad to have found you. I also am a thrifty kinda gal so your tips and tricks are right up my alley.

It scales! Just start! I only had to grab some ziplock bags to get going; the barrier to entry is so small. I almost got stuck waiting for the 'right container' to come along; don't! Just use whatever you have; you can grow this system. So far, I've organized my crazy card/scrapbook supplies and seeds! Did I mention how forgiving this method is? So I know it’s probably strange to most people but we have 8 people including 4 kids in a 4 bedroom house so my bedroom is my craft storage and my crafting is done at the dining room table. My room is small but I cleared out the closet and bought a dresser that fit inside of it, I also having a hanging thing that holds my sheets, pillowcases and towels lol AND a rolling cart with supplies and a project cart. I also have a tall cart with many drawers and a shelf with 3 crates and 2 cases one with wood/leather tools and the other is “odds and ends” lastly 2 large containers one used to be my pet food container and the other is odds and ends mostly cardboard for crafting lol. Yep I also try not to toss anything away (much to the dismay of my family) so I have been limiting saving boxes cause Amazon loves huge families.
I love this and I’m going to get a start of doing this for me craft room. I’m replacing some of these with another dresser so it’s not so chaotic in here.

I get my craft cottage next week and I can’t stop thinking about how I need to get a system. This helps sooooo much!! 🎉

I love this! I am in the middle of putting together my craft room and will definitely have to use this system! I was getting overwhelmed with some items, but this solves the problem!!

THIS IS AMAZING!!! I have been struggling so much with how to organize and store a bunch of small things for so long. I love how this is SO SIMPLE and CHEAP! 😄💖

Love this! So many suggestions just cost too much, my frugal heart can’t stand it 😂. This system can be used for so many things and with inexpensive / up cycled items - perfect! I’m using an old dresser for craft items and it tends to get over stuffed. This may be exactly what it needs ❤

As a squirrel-brained crafty person who hobby-hops A LOT.... This is brilliant. I like the simplicity, the affordability, and the ability to break it down as little or as much as I want categorically.

I got the idea from a home organizing book and it’s mind blowing that ziploc bags never occurred to me before 😂 she had suggested a binder instead of a box though, and I think I’ll use all of the above!

Well now that makes a ton of sense! Between caring for my mom in our home and after she passed our middle child & grand move home…my craft room has been moved and repacked so many times that everything is a bit jumbled. I have always been pretty good at organizing but all this mash up had me upset. It’s terrible to craft and have to hunt for stuff you know you have! This really is helpful. Thank you so much. Glad I stumbled on to you! ❤

I use clear plastic lids like a clam-shell for sharp items, and tape the edge approximately 75% around, and place one strip over the top to keep it closed. When i need to remove a few items, I squeeze the sides like the old spring closed change purses to make it bow open.

I have downloaded (Premium option), saved and bookmarked this video!! I had done the ziploc bag thing for organizing but your brilliant addition of the cardboard to make it stand up is nothing short of genius! It also doubles as a label system. So glad I've been saving cereal boxes! Off to revamp my miscellaneouses 😁.
I also appreciated the additional matching of boxes to size of bags. That was useful to me.
So happy to see you're back in my feeds!

If you use a straw in the corner of your bag and suck out the air you won’t have to put your mouth on the bag that is handled and gets a lot more air out of the bag. I like the idea of cardstock in the bag. Great video

This is sort of how I organize my craft items too, but didn’t think of the cardstock liners for writing the categories and to keep it standing. GREAT IDEA!! Thanks 😊

This is great! I'm taking empty bags to dollar tree to find storage bins that fit perfectly. I have so many little scraps left over from so many projects.

This video will be a lifesaver for me. I always start decluttering and end up stopping when I get to all of that "good" junk that we never know what to do with or where to put it. Finally, an idea that makes sense, looks neat, and will be easy to implement. I'm finally looking forward to clearing out all of this stuff that I don't know where it came from.🙄I couldn't subscribe to your channel fast enough! Thanks for sharing this!

I have clear bins sorted by
    Sharp things
    Sticky things
    Poking and stapling things
    Wire things
    Wood things
    Paper things
    Plastic things
    Leather things
    Fabric things
    Resin things
And everything is visible through the bins... and those KFC bowls are *so good* for sorting and keeping the small bits of a project together!
