- In this video, I completely disassemble the interior of the 4Runner so we can try to improve the road noise inside the 4Runner. Thanks to Noico solutions for sending some sound deadener and sound insulation material to make this video possible. The project was definitely manageable and worth it. Heck yeah!! Thanks for the support! I’d really recommend doing the headliner for maximum effect but I just didn’t have the time to do it.
@@OverlandEngineer I would but ive read the clips are $5 each oem and theheadliner is very fragile. I think it takes a lot to take off aswell.
Really impressed Zach. I have a 2019 limited and it's actually fairly quiet at highway speeds. That said I'm running Michelin Defender LTX M+S all Terrain road tires in 265/60R20 and they are very quiet. (Wife's vehicle) . But I may look into this solution for my Jeep or my pickup. Both are pretty noisy. Thanks for all the effort. Much appreciated. Never really considered this as an option before.

Wow bro I'm really impressed with your thoroughness and the quilty of your videos... where were you 6 months ago ;) some of the stuff you talked about like all the extras space in the 2 rear panels, removing the center counsel, removing the rear wheel panels, etc it was like dejavu regarding the issues I faced back when I did this to my 2015 4runner. I wish this video would have been up then...it would have made it so much easier. You are so thorough and your vids are extremely helpful..TRD Jon Who? Excellent work! However, I went with Kilmat because Noico has an asphalt base to it. In the summer, that will absorb a lot of heat. But not bad for you if you live in a cold climate
I know you said it wasn’t that bad, but man that looks daunting to take all that off.
Haha yeah it looks a lot worse than it is. But it’s a weekend of work. It takes time.
I'm impressed with all the effort that must have took, pulling all that apart. It's funny, I would think nothing of disassembling the suspension, but when it comes to interior stuff I feel like it never goes back the way it was, LOL.
Somebody else mentioned insulating the engine bay, and I had that thought too. The most annoying noise from my 4Runner are the noises from under the hood. I really, REALLY dislike how much engine noise intrudes into the cabin, and it's not a pleasant sounding engine noise either. I've never owned another vehicle with an engine that sounded like it was broken and in pain, LOL.

Every time I start thinking about doing a project, you post a video about you doing that project. I'm very interested in doing this. When the time comes, I'm also going to do the wiring for my custom solar12v system as well. No sense in taking everything apart more than once.

A decibel meter would have been handy. Some before and after readings from various locations in the vehicle - front to back etc.
Yeah that is true. Still probably could do that and comment but I don’t have a decibel meter…
Great job, you really went over the top.👏 I just have a couple questions I wasn’t clear about. In the doors, both front and rear, (in the space behind the vapor barrier) did you use BOTH deadening and foam insulation? Is there proper clearance for both, with the window? And I assume you took a ratchet and removed that foam block while you worked then put it back in right?
Same for the tailgate, inside the tailgate vapor barrier did you use both or one? I don’t think I’ll be removing my whole interior but I’ve already used the silver Noico on my door cards and on the door surrounding hardware speakers etc. notice a huge difference but like you mentioned I want that solid door sound and to not have a so tinny sound when you knock on the outside of the doors.
I did both and I think I put back the foam block. I don’t quite remember the block…

Haha I am not sure I can do that job twice in one year...but it is totally worth it and more approachable if you are just doing the doors. You will need a second person to get the interior panels back on for the second row doors FYI. At least I did haha.
I’m about to do this to my 4Runner while I’m installing a new sound system. One thing I’ve been wondering, would it be possible to fill the door cavities and rear cargo cavities with some sort of packing or foam to further reduce sound travel? Or is there something in those places that would impede that? I’m considering doing some sort of expanding foam in plastic bags to keep it dry.
Hmm...maybe...a lot of closed cell foam inherently is a water barrier. The shape is odd and the access is difficult. The window also needs to roll down basically right in the middle...could try!
@@OverlandEngineer the window rolling down in the middle was what I was afraid of. Maybe I’ll roll the windows down during install to see if there’s any way to just adhere some 1” foam sheets without contacting the window. Thanks!
The sound deadening was pretty nice. Butt my First thought was Damn look at the wasted room Behind the plastic that is begging to be used.

@@tpseeker3367 Never heard of him but that is some super nice built ins he has. I have slightly thought about it but not much. It looks like he maybe had access to a CNC for cutting wood or something? Not sure but I just don't know what to make the structure out of so that it is supportive and can bend around all the different cavities and turns.
Jigsaw, skillsaw, drill & cardboard is all he used @@OverlandEngineer from what his build vids showed. He's got some mad skills bouncing around that noggin of his.
Guess after awhile living in something for so long the mind can wonder in so many directions & his was put to very good use in how to use literally every Inch he has @@OverlandEngineer

@@OverlandEngineer the loudest component on any vehicle is the engine less noise in cab insulating. toyota might have a part # for the hood insulation for your 4runner.
@@Dieselnm101 I would be curious about this too. I have a similar 4Runner, and I don't find it to be especially noisy. The biggest source of noise seems to come from the engine. And it's not good noise either. I love the engine noise from the 5.7 liter LS1 in my Firebird, the 4runner however sounds like a Ninja blender full of ball bearings.
Can you use that stuff under the hood ?
