    Wonderful knives, a family friend who recently passed left us one he had. He was born and grew up in Nepal, and was given it by a Nepalese army member as a young lad. He kept it and cherished it as a reminder of his childhood. Sadly he passed away in April earlier this year.

    Got mine yesterday! Three weeks to deliver, which was a week less than I expected. It is a very fine knife, and larger than two others I have. Super sharp! Excellent craftsmanship. They even sent a bio on the smith that made it! I may order a different knife from them now.

    There was a ex Gurkha who worked with us in our Security team well he told me none of the Gurkha's knew who made their Khukuri's he said the way the Khukuri's are made is who offers the cheapest Khukuri wins the contract and the maker and the British Government keeps it secret who makes the #1 #2 for the Gurkha intake so from year to year anyone of the Khukuri house's could be making the #1 #2 Khukuri's for the Gurkha units

    • @SeemsLogical
      @SeemsLogical Před 7 lety +2

      Tora Blades is known to be the most historically accurate khukuri maker on the current market. They appeal to people who want to hold the most authentic khukuri they can get out of Nepal. So they have smaller handles, a rat tail tang and are generally lighter than all the other khukuri makers. Not always the best, but they can say their khukuris are the most authentic khukuris around. Recently though most people tout them as the best khukuri manufacturer or tied with the best.
      Ex-Gurka Khukuri House appeals to a different kind of customer. They have the largest selection of khukuris around. They do make some historic style khukuris but take more creative license with their khukuris by doing things like serrating the spine of the blade, putting a finger guard on the khukuri or completely restyling the handle in a more westernized fashion. So you can say that these khukuris are more "customizable" and that appeals to people because many of their khukuris actually look and feel way different than one another. The khukuris shown in this video is on the tame side and is more traditional in appearance.
      And then there is Himalayan Imports who started out making historically accurate khukuris but have since "improved" upon that design by making their khukuris thicker and giving them a full tang. They are heavy and have the most heft while also being damn near indestructible. They also have the best customer service around (EGKH is also good for this as well).
      Khukuri Palace is fourth khukuri manufacturer in today's market and I do not know their stock well enough to give an accurate depcition of what they are like. Only pictures and out of the companies I listed above they most resemble Ex-Gurka Khukuri House in the khukuris they display on their page.

      The only thing I can see that this knife lacks is a full tang construction. The rat tail construction is supposed to hold up for 5-8 years but it can be re-fit. I just think the knife's shape seems to increase it chopping power. I thought the design of the handle would let it slip out of your hand. But I have used it a lot and it actually helps you hold it. I'm pretty happy with the knife I take it with me when ever we hike. A pair of leather work gloves is better than bare handed but for the occasional use in the woods it is fine. If I buy another one House of Kukri has a full tang model

    Ex-Gurka Khukuri House makes some nice khukuris, but they aren't the only ones on the market. Tora Blades, Himalayan Imports and Khukuri Palace are their competitors. If you want to be a return customer to Ex-Gurka Khukuri House there is no shame in that and you can ignore the rest of this comment. But if you are interested in seeing what else is on the market I will leave the websites for each of the makers down below.
    Himalayan Imports: yhst-7333098713883.stores.yahoo.net/index.html
    Tora Blades: torablades.com/shop/index.php
    Khukuri Palace: khukuripalace.com/
    I cannot speak much about Khukuri Palace. I do not know anyone who I trust who owns one and reviews of their khukuris are practically non-existent (this can be good or bad). Tora Blades I know quite a few with some of their khukuris. Early in the company's history they have a quality control problem, but ever since 2015 when they found a new Kami (the guy who makes the khukuris) they have been putting out a good and reliable product again. And I personally own a Himalayan Imports Khukuri and can say that it is solidly built, a tad heavy, but is a great khukuri to own.

    • @ricaldrich3424
      @ricaldrich3424  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the info. I've been looking at Tora blades and I want to get one of their knives.

    • @SeemsLogical
      @SeemsLogical Před 7 lety +1

      You should. Try to get a khukuri from each of the major khukuri makers to find what you like best in your khukuri.
      Tora Blades is very rigid in their design philosophy where every blade is within a 28-34 cm length and have a 500-750 gram weight limit and a few other things. They avoid adding the frills most other khukuri manufacturers seem to be doing and their khukuris are nearly identical to one anotheras a result of this but its a tried and true design and they are sticking with it.
      I wish I could recommend you one in particular but I know someone who might be a really good person to ask. There is a youtube channel on here with the handle "sweetcostarica." Tora Blades Khukuris are his preferred khukuri maker and he has a lot of them that he reviews on his channel. Give him a visit and maybe reach out to him and see if he can point you in the right direction.
