I have been biking for over forty years and until last year had never even sat on a scooter let alone ridden one. I still have several bikes and enjoy them all but last year purchased a BMW C400GT and love it. It gets out more than any other bike I have to do all sorts from day trips with my wife on the back to running to the shops. It’s much more capable than you would expect, sits easily at motorway speeds two up with more to come from the engine if you needed it. It’s also extremely comfortable rider and pillion, with good handling and easy manoeuvrability and I get more waves from bikers than I do on my GS.

It is very good, the best in the 350 field. Do you think worth the extra cost new compared to the ADV350 which has more useful under seat storage? Depends on what you need.

    • @SouthWest-jj8yu

@@timothyrobson3325 I’m not sure I’ve never tried the Honda. When I got my C400 there just weren’t any adv 350’s available, the price difference wasn’t that much as I got a used model with only 395 miles for £5600. For the little extra there’s heated grips and seat, twin discs at the front with steel hoses and radial mounted brakes. As to storage I have fitted a top box, not the BMW one that was just too expensive for what I needed, for a little over £100 got the SHAD adjustable box that looks good suits the bike and is easily lifted off as only use it occasionally, my pillion prefers the security of the box being there.

@@SouthWest-jj8yuI agree with you 100%. The c400 GT can be a bargain second hand. I got a similar deal. It is a better scooter than the ADV except the Honda has a lot of space under the seat.

    Yamaha Tricity 300.
After long history of riding different scooters, and few motorcycles ( last kawasaki ER-5), I have bought new Yamaha Tricity 300.
I have it for a year now..
It's such a great machine...Comfortable, very sure footed(tons of grip), easy on the gas( 3l/100km around town)... under seat storage is massive! Two full-size helmets and more space left for a jacket. This is such a plus for going for a shopping..
Enough power for longer journeys..also you get lockable suspension of the three wheels which makes parking and moving in a garage easy..Also standing on the traffic lights without the need to put your legs down..ABS, traction control all standard. Digital display.. I simply love it and enjoy riding it..

I've owned two Burgman 650 Execs for a total of 11 years, and now a '23 C 400 GT for half a year (and a '22 C 400 GT for a year before that, which BMW swapped out for me, the result of a major engine malfunction). And, interspersed over the years, an R 850 R, a Valkyrie Interstate, a Victory Cross Country Tour, and my current backup bike, a Royal Enfield Meteor 350. I've also ridden the C 400 X on three Edelweiss tours now: Tuscany, Vienna, and, by special dispensation, the Ultimate Alps.
The main draw, for me, for the C 400 GT is its absolutely SUPERB handling. I think it has more lean angle than any of those other bikes (measured by my GoPro Hero11 as at least 43° left and 41° right). It's a twisty maven.
And I also like the looks of the GT. And the brakes are very good. And the engine has a good amount of pep, smoothness, and top speed (86 mph as spec'ed in the owner's manual, but 89 on level ground, per my GPS).
The bodywork construction of the GT is much better than on the 650 Burgman (and, from what I've read, that goes for the 400 Burgman, as well). BMW uses gobs of same-size Torx screws and expanding metal spring clips. Suzuki relies on tiny and thin plastic tabs and plastic pop-rivets, and the odd bolt. Definite quality on the Beemer.
And also a very important consideration for me is that the pillion accommodations are spot on for my wife. This encompassed the seat width and padding, the foot and leg positioning, and the flat pad on the optional BMW topcase. This was all wrong on the Execs, and forced me to go to a local upholsterer to remedy some of the shortcomings on the first one I owned.
The underseat full-face-helment-holding Flexcase is a wash. Nice to have for a lunch stop, but non-existent when riding, should you want to use it for storing something other than a helmet.
The lack of windscreen height adjustability is also kind of a wash. I almost never used the electric windscreen motors on the Execs, i.e., just left them -- aftermarket Clearviews -- in place. There are reasonable aftermarket sources for different windscreens for the GT, in addition to two BMW variants.
The shocks on the GT are nothing to brag about. Certainly better than on the Meteor (but that bike has tons of elemental back-road charm!).
BMW falls short here in many respects, though.
Biggest fail, IMO, is the lack of cruise control. We have a lot of wide-open spaces on this side of the pond, often needing to be traversed to get to the good stuff. I think it's a borderline sin to have a bike with THROTTLE-BY-WIRE and umpteen sensors and switches, and a nice TFT display, to NOT have cruise control. And it's not as if BMW doesn't know how to do the programming; almost all their other bikes have this. And they call this a Grand Tourer?
Second biggest fail is the sideways placement of the Schrader valves, in the "spoke" area. This precludes adding an external TPMS sensor to the front wheel, because it would smack into a brake caliper (and I actually have one FOBO sensor on the rear wheel -- the other sensor gathers dust on a shelf). BMW should either have TPMS as a factory option -- again, something they do for most of their other bikes -- or they should put the Schrader valves in the center of the rims, like everyone else does.
Also, the underseat storage area is kind of wonky. There's not a large area, but instead it's compartmentalized into a bunch of smaller ones.
And the TFT is not properly utilized, IMO. The engine RPMs can be viewed only on one screen that has very little other data, and so not viewed on the main screen that has all the other data. And it's very drab, compared to the colorful nature of, well, other Beemers and most every other bike that has a TFT screen.
I might have purchased the AK 550 if I could have found a dealer here with one in stock, within, say, 500 miles. No luck there. I understand from a few fellow ex-Burgman riders that it's a very good bike. But I won't order a bike that I can't at least sit on, and preferably with my wife out back, too.
And, years back, when Yamaha was selling the T-Max over here, I actually test-rode one at a rally (Americade). I liked it, very sporty, but I had a Burgman at the time, I think; in any case, I didn't need a second bike then. And wouldn't you know it, but as Yammy kept improving that scoot, they also stopped selling it in North America.
So, FWIW, I would've put the AK 550 and the T-Max ahead of the C 400 GT. Much as I (mostly) love the GT and its handling, I keep reading good things about the Kymco and the Yammy, too. And they have factory cruise (something I added -- MC Cruise -- to my first Burgman, and something that the Victory bagger had stock), maybe handling nearly as good, razzle-dazzle use of the TFT, good underseat storage, and Schrader valves in the right place.
Of course, that's for some open-space riding. If I lived in an urban jungle, I might opt for a Vespa 300, as they're nimble and eye-catching, at least to me. And speaking of urban bikes, I've never ridden the CE-04: they may be fast off the line, but I did sit on one in a showroom and thought a sheet of 3/4" plywood might be more comfortable on my tush.
Argh, they're all good, as long as you're enjoying yourself.
You wanted comments, well, those are mine.

It's difficult nowadays to determine what is a scooter and what is a "proper" motorcycle. It used to be easy, a scooter was a machine where you could mount it simply by sliding your leg through the gap between the seat and the front forks. Handy if you are wearing a skirt. A motorcycle on the other hand, meant you had to throw your leg over the seat. It seems this is no longer the case.

I bought a new BMW C400GT as I wanted something manoeuvrable, no clutch/gears, good MPG / KPL for nipping to the shops or heading out on the twistier roads for some fun, however a 350cc single cylinder engine lacks the power for distance on highways/motorways. I'm looking at trading in my 6 month old machine for a more powerful engine to put the smile back on my face. The SYM looks like it could be the answer but the limited dealership numbers concern me.....

They used to be here, had Amazing quality scoots on par with Kymco, also built in Taiwan with ceramic coated one piece cylinder heads. Not many in the U.S. have heard of them and don't realize they are worlds apart from a low budget cheap Chinese💩 bike. They have been in the game since 1954 & used to work alongside Honda and still have their quality in mind they're also HUGE overseas and even make cars. I still have my 2007 SYM RV 250 painted in Dupont electric blue thought about selling it but it's too much fun being flickable yet extremely dependable. It is parked next to my 2017 Burgman 650 bought on the weekend of St🍀 Patrick's Day 2024 in Pearl bracing white. Damn they are both sexy.😍😹 Both run great and were bought used, $5000 for the Suzuki from a Very decent stand up honest 66-year-old man with 24,000 cross country Highway miles (with many extras) & $2300 for the SYM (bought in 2016) also from an older gentleman only had 3500 miles @ the time (mostly local city miles) I did find one decent CZcams video on a red 2009 SYM identical to mine except the color.✌️

Keep all the unnecessary tech, and give us the cc's and the asthetics (which is the appeal of it anyways), and a scooter friendlier price tag and you'll sell more. We dont need all the tech, and nobody wants to pay 14,000 for a scooter no matter how good it looks. Coprende?

2022 Tech Max was beautiful scooter. Was a proud owner of it (although painting is cheap, it's very scratchy). Complete digital board, which started from 2023, is so ugly, it's like some cheap, in prototype phase, Chinese scooter. You don't know if Classic or Tech Max is more terrible: Classic has that one screen and the upper part looks like something is missing (which is actually a part that comes on Tech Max), but Tech Max looks like it has too many screens, like some failed hybrid of screens lol. Only worth from Yamaha now is T Max, but it's too expensive, so bye Yamaha, I will miss you 😭

I unintentionally got a 2009 Burgman 400, instead of getting my money back... and got so used to scooters, that I started to look for something better and probably newer and bit faster ... But I got used to the huge storage under the seat and both glove box and other two top boxes ... After all it's a MAXI scooter - to be able to fit LOTS of my stuff... Why are all the newer stuff so much smaller, with so much less storage ?! I don't want to put on side boxes for the city! Even this HUGE X-ADV has less storage - it's just taller and .... clunky IMO ... I can appreciate the flashy design but functionallity is junk honestly. And since my model Burgman is built to 2015 or something like that, I guess I'll save my money and just upgrade and tune up my Burgman. I honestly don't see a way better city fitted, large storage option.
