Pete Seeger opened my eyes to REAL music that actually meant something. In the 60's I became a broadcaster and proudly played the Master at WTAI in Melbourne, Florida, (screw the "America,-Love-It-Or-Leave-It" gang!) and later at WORJ and WDIZ in Orlando, Florida. Pete Seeger's music will survive us all and it should be cherished as a true chord in the American heart. --Steve Mack
I was so saddened to hear of his passing, though I knew Pete was getting up there in years. An American treasure, an American folk and music legend, an American activist for all things worth fighting for, God Bless we will miss you-but never forget your message.
Just returned from a week's holiday in Cuba to learn that while I was away, one of my heroes - both musically and as a human rights co-activist - had died. While in Cuba, I heard numerous bands sing their versions of "Guantanamera" (written by their national hero Jose Marti) in glorious harmony. And I thought fondly of Pete - as I consider his to be the definitive version - and the version I base my own interpretation upon. Little did I know that it was the end of the line for him. It is difficult to express how much gratitude I feel for his inspiration - and how much sadness at the loss. Thank you SO much, Mr. Seeger. xoxo
Brings back fond memories of those wonderful days of the 60's 70's when the Vietnam War was on and the then idealistic musical greats like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez stirred us with their wonderful songs. I was at the living on beautiful Salt Spring Island, B.C. Canada where I got to meet many idealists Americans who left the U.S. as a symbol of protest and came to Salt Spring Island and enriched our lives at the time.
Pete has inspired me with this sweet song since i first heard it over 40 yrs ago. Now I start each morning with a little meditation so that peace is with me all day. Thanks for this nice live version.
Pete Seeger is what we as Americans are, when we are at our best; Opinionated, sometimes right and sometimes wrong, driven, idealistic, hard working, self sufficient talented, compassionate and at times annoyingly politically oriented . love him or hate him he still is a great treasure of Folk music and a historic American of voice and activism. Whether he is a communist or just labeled one by alleged fascists in republican drag reveals that name calling won't diminish his character or ours.
JAN. 28, 2014: Pete Seeger, the singer, Folk song collector, and songwriter who spearheaded an American folk revival and spent a long career championing Folk music as both a vital heritage and a catalyst for social change, died on Monday in Manhattan. He was 94.
Pete Seeger is a beacon of integrity to more than one generation and an international audience. His vision of a human race motivated more by their decency than their narrowness transcends political sectarianism. Viva Pete!
my father used to sing this to me when i was a little kid as a lullaby, i watch this video whenever i need a remeinder of him most of the time i end up in tears but it still makes me feel better
He was so wonderful, and I remember all those stone faced people in the crowd. He really made a difference in the path my life took, and I am grateful to this day.
Pete Seeger was and is a leader in the fight for civil rights, workers rights, and environmental preservation. He fought against government corruption and abuse of power. And in his spare time, he cleaned up the Hudosn River and entertained millions with his music. Pointing out the problems and unfairness in our country and having the courage to do something about it makes him a patriot in the eyes of millions, You pick your heroes and we'll pick ours!
I remember first hearing this song in instrumental form as a very young child, and being struck by the beauty of it's melody.Later I learned the profundity of it's meaning and the circumstances of it's creation which made me love it all the more. Thanks Pete and thanks 2old2rock for the upload
This is wonderful! I was in Cuba a few weeks ago, at a fiesta, and everyone sang this song along with the musicians, from children to elders. We joined in on the chorus, but now I want to learn all the words for our next visit We did not know that Jose Marti wrote the song. Thanks to whoever uploaded this video.
RIP Pete. He was a political and musical giant on whose shoulders many stood. I saw him in concert at Sydney University in 1963 - a musical event fondly remembered. One of the greats. Farewell.
gosh i love him so much! i went to see him a month and a half ago! my friend is making a documentary, and i got to be th back up camera. mostly so i could meet him and wow. his view is gorgeous. and his house is soo cute! and his wife had a big pot of oatmeal and they are just the perfect old couple. it just makes me ridiculously hopeful for humanity when i see people like him.
oh man, i had copied the link to this around five yrs ago to my fb to share this superb rendition for friends to listen.Today i return here and sadly i note Mr Seeger died two yrs ago. i feel shattered.
He has an amazing command of Spanish in addition to being a really great guitarist. He has national treasure status at this point ... does he have a star on a folk music walk of fame?
Rest in peace good sir! A life well lived and purposeful songs well shared. You will always be an inspiration to those of us fighting social injustice.
When I first heard this song when I was younger I kinda learnt Spanish from this song, not that I knew what it was all about. My mum and late dad liked this song..it is truly a beautiful song...
Pete Seeger is one of the greatest patriots who ever lived. If there has ever been anyone who loved America it is Pete Seeger. Just because his views are different than yours does not mean that he "hates America"
Point taken , I'll give you that. Guantamera, means girl from Guantanamo a region of Cuba. Guajira has two meanings peasant girl and also it is a musical style. In this style/rythm the same melody is played again and again and the verses are improvised. In the traditional way , two singer will do a mano a mano, and obviously they can say anything that comes to their minds the trick is that it has to rhyme and make sense. It is really amazing and entretaining to watch.
My cello teacher and Pete were Army buddies in WW2 and remained friends all their lives. I wish I had a way to get in touch with Pete to let him know that he passed away. I have original pictures of them together on Saipan. They played and sang together for the wounded soldiers, and received special commendation for it.
Pete, you are my musical and political idol! In my heart and soul, you will never die. You will live with you wonderful person, until I die! Love and greatest admiration to you!
To listen to Pete Seger is most uplifting. When the world is surrounded by fascist politicians in UK,USA and Australia to name a few Pete reminds us of human values that really count.
it took 13 years but someone else finally noticed this. the first thing I thought when the video started was "THAT'S THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS SET!" I grew up watching that show from taped episodes my grandma recorded. Loved it.
Bravo Pete Seeger! So what if he is not a native speaker! It's a remarkable accomplishment what he has done. He is one of the heroes of the history of US music. "Con los pobres de la tierra quiero yo mi suerte echar" "With the poor of the earth, I want to cast my luck"... I'm sure verses like this is why he decided to sing it. Agree with Carbaprop
Pete Seeger introduced this song to America and made it famous, as he did many other songs from other cultures. Although i'm sure that a version from Cuba might be more enjoyable for many, Seeger should be respected for the amount of education he did for the American public. Plus you should listen to his original songs, because those are indisputably fantastic.

I love Pete Seeger and I love the song "guantanamera." I, personally like to say "guantanamera, guayaba guantanamera" in the chorus, because I love that word and I feel it goes good with the song. PS, "guayaba" is Spanish for "guava."
I like the simple fact Pete Seager was/is a communist and not everyone hated him for it. was a rebel and wasn't imprisoned for speaking freely and had motivation that was his own and was able to gain respect profit and recognition for his personal conviction in a land that has as many flaws as any other but where a fair trial used to be our way before condemning a people or a movement. Pete Seager showed why America works despite the bigots and the powerful political allies of corruption.
Rest well Mr. Seeger. I'm grateful for your music. My Father used to sing this to me when I was little.
You were with us through the Civil Rights ERA, you were with us even before then and now long afterwards, we are with you.. Thank you kindly, sir.
Rest in peace, as you lived in peace, and shared such peace.

We must continue to sing songs of peace....
That this has 1.3 M views is a testimony to the pureness and timelessness of the great Pete Seeger.
We have lost a great poet and troubador. My tears are shed for the hole left in my soul.
The French are free
Inimitable. Respect, bonheur dans l'âme, et vive Monsieur Seeger.

Old Pete was alright.
As we say in Brazil... Lindo, lindo lindo!!!
Thank you for the life.
Just discovered Pete here, what a beautiful way to transcend the musical borders that limit us.
He has an amazing command of Spanish in addition to being a really great guitarist. He has national treasure status at this point ... does he have a star on a folk music walk of fame?
His song catalogue is so rich. Little Boxes says so much about leading a life of blind conformity.
Rest in peace good sir! A life well lived and purposeful songs well shared. You will always be an inspiration to those of us fighting social injustice.

The original and ultimate humanitarian
superb !

I thought so, too! Good catch!
CUBA LIBRE! RIP, PETE SEEGER!
In any language, this song is beautiful poetry.
And here's the entire translation of the verses Pete sings:
I am a sincere man
From where the palm tree grows
And before dying I want
To share the verses of my soul.
My verse is light green
And it is flaming crimson
My verse is a wounded deer
Who seeks refuge on the mountain (or in the woods).
With the poor people of the earth
I want to share my fate
The brook of the mountains
Gives me more pleasure than the sea
Thank you for the translation!
I love Pete Seeger and I love the song "guantanamera."
I, personally like to say "guantanamera, guayaba guantanamera" in the chorus, because I love that word and I feel it goes good with the song.
