  • In this video I will teach the Sun Style Tai Chi form Leisurely Tying the Coat. Brush Knee is a lead into Leisurely Tying Coat. Leisurely Tying Coat is a beautiful Sun Style form and is found in several of the Sun Style Form sets, including the competition Sun Style 73 Form.
Sun Style Tai Chi was created by Sun LuTang. You can read more about him and Sun Style Tai Chi in the book Sun LuTang. amzn.to/4b1uJVk (I am an amazon affiliate and make a small commission if you use this link to purchase. It is of no additional cost to you).
Sun Style Tai Chi was popularized by Dr. Paul Lam and Tai Chi for Health with the Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention Sun Style form set. The higher Tai Chi stance is easier on the knees and lends itself to more Tai Chi accessibility for all ages.
Sun Style Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan or Taiji, builds better balance, helps with arthritis, and is suitable as Tai Chi for Seniors, Tai Chi for Beginners, or any level of Tai Chi players. Sun Style Tai Chi is the newest style of Tai Chi and is around 300 years old. It is characterized by short stepping patterns called the follow step, with quick lithe stepping movements when sped up. A high level Sun Style Tai Chi practitioner can be behind his opponent very quickly with this unique stepping style. Also the follow step means you spend more time in a single leg stance, while lightly supported by the follow step leg. This improves balance and is a great way to prevent falls in the elderly or in any age. Remember any practice of Tai Chi is considered Kung fu. Kung fu simply means a focused practice to develop a high level skill. So get your kung fu on, practice Sun Style Tai Chi and learn these fun forms, Brush Knee, Play the Lute, Parry and Punch, Receive the Tiger and Push the Mountain!

Thank you so very much! Next week I will be releasing another video on leisurely tying coat. I will be teaching a refinement of that movement. I hope you enjoy that one as well! Thanks for commenting.

Really appreciate your thorough teaching of a single/double form and would love to see more of these in any style to eventually tie them together into a coordinated flow. I believe to understand core principals but would like to venture into learning forms online with quality instruction like yours.

Good evening Susan. What a beautifully instructed Sun Style Tai Chi: Leisurely Tying Coat with Brush Knee. You always make what seems impossible, possible. You always give so much of knowledge, experience and above all yourself so freely. From one to another. Thank you. Julie X 🙏🌞

Your Sun Form is very nice. Sun style traces back to the Wu brothers. The Wu brothers learned from Yang Luchan, and then from Chen Qingping. Yang’s original instruction was from Chen Changxing in the Large Chen Frame. Qingping taught the Small
Chen Frame. The Wu brothers adopted many of the Small Frame characteristics including its emphasis on opening and closing. Sun style is also famous for showing Taijiquan’s live/usage stepping. The following step you point out being one form of this. All in all a very nice demonstration of the form.

When pushing at the end, it’s look’s like your body goes backwards or body goes back and arm goes forward. What going on?

You have an astute eye. Yes you are correct. If I moved forward with the "push" it would be too much forward. Every forward expression needs to be balanced with an absorbing or backward movement, or better yet an expansion. If done correctly then someone pushing on my forward hand would be moved backwards with my own absorbing and expanding energy. I hope this makes sense. If I did all forward I would easily be pulled off balance by the opponent.
