Oh, I guess he did say that that one level was the closest to what the game was trying to achieve. Which is a classic case of damning with faint praise.

As long as Square doesn't express their disdain toward content creators/streamers and lets them be who they are - I guess it's an ok thing

Considering how critical you were in your FFXVI video. I'm shocked Square is sponsoring you. I got to give them respect for that.
I mean most of his criticisms were reasonable and at no point did he imply the game was bad. Definitely less extreme than some more vocal critics of 16.
His review was fair and diplomatic. He said a lot of good things about the game as well as bad things. I'm not surprised personally.
I think Max was also not the impressed about 16, but that still didn’t stop square from inviting him for 2 previews.

I didn't know Dirge of Cerberus existed until recently when looking for OG FF7 on howlongtobeat. I love that Final Fantasy got its own Shadow the Hedgehog.

Surprising to say the least. I distinctly remember an update video where he said he'd never take paid sponsorships for video games, but maybe that was moreso about Reviews, this video being a story recap, musings about atmosphere and some initial impressions on Rebirth. I'm not trying to create beef here or anything though, I'm sure it's tough being a full time youtuber and despite the videos IMO improving so much since the Bayonetta 3 review, the views in the channel have been declining, and it's a shame, cuz this is probably my favorite channel. I'm honestly happy he got paid by such a big company and got to make a big video that still feels distinctly his, especially when he was so critical of XVI.
I remember some years ago Brit was going through the Compilation of FFVII and posted stories about it on Instagram, it's prob something he's wanted to make for a while.
Maybe we'll see a full un-sponsored critique of Rebirth once it's out or even a giant series for the entire Compilation, who knows?

That main theme of the overworld roaring to life after escaping Midgar and realizing that hours of the game took place in *one city* is the kinda scope you didn't really see before 1997.
The music challenges to chase down Sephiroth and save the world.
I think that Sephiroth and Aerith travel back in time from the original game timeline to the Remake timeline via the Lifestream and they are working against each other throughout the remake.
The only problem with it is that we don't see future aerith. The whispers can be a manifestation of the souls of the dead of the cetras vs the human corrupted by jenova and it's just a long war between them, many of the theories can be attributed to cloud madness

That makes sense when you think about it. The real-world Space Race was driven by the Cold War, and there's nothing like that going on in FFVII's world.
I always thought Sephiroth to be the extreme of Nature whereas Shinra was the extreme of technology. As Sephiroth expanded the concept of Nature to the rest of the Universe once he realized what his mother was, and most of the Universe is the abcense of life. Even Cid's sidequest makes him look back from his shuttle at the Planet, loosing his interest in the romance of the cosmos. The Cetra is like a fine balance, that which says the human/player is like a cell in the larger organism of thw World, which holds life due to the rarest of chances (or miracle, as Aerith has a praying motif). Shinra would be a cancer then, and Sephiroth/jenova a parasite.
My fiance has been playing the FFVIIR series with me and doesn't know the original at all. She's asked me certain questions about the original's story where I just scratched my head and was like... uhm...
So yeah, great retelling and I didn't know a lot about the supplemental materials to begin with. Thumbs up here.

I actually started playing it like a week or two before Rebirth just came out yesterday. Ngl, I pick up the game and sometimes forget to go to bed early enough for work the next day. It really is an amazing game. Gotta work the next 3 days, then everyone needs to leave me alone on my next day off 😂

Playing through FF6 recently, and I never realized just how much FF6 and FF7 have in common when it comes to story and themes. Zeitgeist of the time, I suppose. Magically infused super heroes and villains, ancient god/goddess that are aliens, magic coming to prominence again, etc. Sure the story beats are a bit different but much of the story outline is very much the same.
I loved the sci-fi and high fantasy infusion of this era of FF. I would have loved to see it developed more.
Not juste story... Music, characters, structure... Ff VII draws heavily from V and VI, whenever I'm replaying these I can't stop noticing similarities (just go and listen to sealed book from ff v...)

Have had major hand issues that have prevented me from being able to play video games recently and I was hoping to play FF7 before watching Maximilian Stream Rebirth, so I'm really glad that you made this because now I feel like I have all of the supernecessary context to comfortably experience rebirth even though I can't use my hands Thank you. Was very depressed about my hands and stuff, and this video just made my day.

Before crisis has actually been fan translated and has a fan remake in RPG Maker but I wish square enix would re-release it or remake it themselves since it's pretty much the only thing from the compilation that hasn't been released in the west

FFVII has definitely become the embodiment of a fan service series. Every character is getting its moment whether through a dedicated game or an expanded backstory in the remake. And we're now delving into alternate timelines and time travel shenanigans to provide that "what if" fan wet dream in droves which is the defining trope of fan service driven content destined to milk a franchise to its last drop. Thanks for making that video that greatly helps to put all the evidence into perspective.
Another RPG that tries a similar twist with Cloud, and might even be more philosophically interesting, is Tales of the Abyss.
The protagonist, Luke, is revealed to have been a clone of the actual Luke that got swapped several years before the game started. So when the original Luke comes back he's now a complete stranger to his own family, while the clone has to cope with the fact he effectively stole someone else's entire existence.
Excellent video. I was too young at the time to understood some of the more profound messages.

As someone who does not care about FF7 at all (but still is going to play Rebirth because I love action games) this was a perfect recap video. I'm actually interested in the story and lore of these games now, so you did more than my 15 or so hours with Remake ever did. I just hate how anime everything was in that game, and I'm not expecting much to change in Rebirth, but at least I have some understanding now why so many people care about this universe. All thanks to you.
