I'm 47 and almost have a 5th stripe on my blue belt (yes, that's a joke), so I really look for clear instruction that will help me develop in a way that's smarter, not harder as parts of my body wont heal the same way as they did in my MMA days. I really love the rolling commentary with prioritizing and tips. Im a brown belt and struggle on the mats, especially with bigger or even just more athletic people. Your videos are very helpful. Watching you roll with Bobby was like watching a magic show. I couldnt believe how well you were able to do against that large of a purple belt that was very athletic and strong too. Every time he started to gain good positions you were able to address it before it got bad for you and reverse it. That was amazing. I cant seem to figure out how to do that. I feel like I should be able to but just cant. When this happens to me on the mats its very disappointing and discouraging. It makes me feel like I dont deserve my brown belt. I can stay safe from submissions a lot of times but Im not reversing positions and getting taps. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

      Javier; you’re far more experienced in jujitsu than I am but I would still like to offer you a suggestion. Find a partner that is less experience than you, someone that you can easily handle and practice the moves in this video one at a time. Repeat each one several times until you can feel it and do it without having to think about it too much.
      Sometimes problems a student is repeatedly having are actually from a lack of live roll coaching. I.e. “ OK stop you, see what you did here,, instead you need to do this.“ “Now back up, I want you to do this to me five times in a row.”

    • @omaleymaldonado9801
      @omaleymaldonado9801 Před 2 lety +6

      If you got a brown belt it means you earned it! So, don't ever feel like you don't deserve it. Jiu Jitsu is about constantly learning. The chess game that never ends. Even some of the elite black belts talk about constantly learning new things. Bernardo Faria is always talking about this. I am a big guys so with my experience it seems that you need to find that go to from every position. I had a buddy with that same issue and we would roll because he wanted to figure out ways to counter big guy moves. We did this for 6 months until one day he was giving me a run for my money and started submitting me. I asked "what changed", and he said, he solely focused on escapes, and sweeps. Youtubing different ways to escape big men. Everything else just fell into place. Now I have to go back to the drawing board and figure out new techniques and reversals. You need to have fun rolling with big guys. They are the puzzle of technique, strength, and weight. I weigh 285 lbs. and all the black belts in my gym love rolling with me because of my athleticism for my weight. Don't get frustrated! Adapt, overcome, and succeed. Above all remember to have fun!

    • @JordanTeachesJiujitsu
      @JordanTeachesJiujitsu  Před 2 lety +35

      Hey man wish I could give you some ground breaking advice but in reality it just takes time to become technical to a level where you can handle the big boys like this.
      On top of technicality I also have the advantage of being pretty athletic and strong myself. I think even with my skill level, I'd have a tough time being as effective against the big boys if I didn't have the physicality too.
      I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. If you do BJJ as a hobby you should be happy with hobbyist skills. I, and other high level blackbelts have dedicated our lives to this beyond hobby and more into obsession. That may sound harsh out if out of context, but it isn't meant to. It's like how I'm okay with not being world class at guitar even though I love playing. I haven't nor can i put in the hours to become elite at it.
      But that doesn't stop me from loving playing. The difference in BJJ is that "losing" largely is an uncomfortable experience where you get beat up.
      If you don't put that high level effort into becomimg high level I wouldn't worry about not being high level. I would just focus on becoming as good as you can be but accept there's limitations if you don't 100% dedicate yourself, which isn't for everyone.
      Don't think that you don't deserve your belt either. I'm sure you do. Gotta trust your coaches judgment. I have students that feel the exact same way, at brown too, yet I'm proud of their skill and ability.
      Hope that made sense 🙂

    Awesome stuff! I like the detail you put into the rolls because it's always the details that I get hung up on. The way you stop your opponent from going to their back with the arm in guillotine was great. I'll have to work on that at open mat!
