Welcome to Mallorca! I'm Jake James and I'm going to show you how spending just two days of your holiday out the resort could make it so much better. What comes into your mind when you hear the name Mallorca? If you’re from the UK like me, there’s a pretty good chance that we all picture it in a similar way. Magaluf and package holidays. But that’s an image that is so unfair, because this wonderful island has so much more to give. Mallorca is a part of Spain - more specifically, it’s the largest of the Balearic islands. Its location in the Mediterranean means that the sun shines all year round. Many come to Mallorca for the glow of its white sandy beaches. Mallorca has a population of around 900,000 people - but 28 million people pass through Mallorca’s main airport every year, roughly equivalent to a third of the UK population. Mallorca’s landscape is dominated by two mountain ranges - Serra de Tramuntana and Serra de Llevant. These roads through the mountains are some of the most beautiful drives in the world. While you’re here, why not enjoy those roads in an electric car? Mallorca has pledged that by 2050, only electric vehicles will be permitted on the island, and charging points are everywhere. Or, if you’re the one full of energy, Mallorca attracts around 150,000 cycling tourists every year - and the mountains are mapped with dozens of hiking routes that take you all over the island. There’s so much to see and do in Mallorca, but that image of a cheap party holiday still exists. There’s nothing evil about treating yourself to a hassle free resort - your holiday time is valuable, and finding a chance to relax these days is a luxury itself. But we wanted to show you More of Mallorca. Show you how to get more out of your holiday - and still leave you with plenty of time to get the relaxation you deserve.
Do you want to know the secret to a hassle-free start to your trip? It’s an airport lounge. Away from the hustle and bustle you can enjoy some lunch, a few drinks and generally just enjoy a much more chilled out atmosphere than the terminal. After boarding our plane and enjoying a flight of maybe just over two hours, we arrived at Palma de Mallorca Airport.
So we’re off the plane, heading to pick up our checked luggage. Flight was only about two hours, so it wasn’t too bad, but y’know. I’m 6”2” so I would have liked a bit more leg room than RyanAir would have given me for free, but yeah!
And then after we grab our luggage, head to our transfer, which will take us to our accommodation. Which we’ve booked in advance so the guy should be there waiting for us with a little sign. Hop in the car, and off we go!
Booking our transfer in advance meant a door-to-door service - which was ideal for us, and saved us so much time and stress. We’d definitely recommend it. But for now, after a long journey it was time to get plenty of rest before the busy trip ahead. In 2011, the Tramuntana mountain range was awarded World Heritage Status - as an area of great physical and cultural significance. Nestled in these mountains, just a 15-20 minute drive from Palma in our electric hire car, is a little town called Valldemossa. It’s a picturesque place - like something from a film. When you arrive, you’re surrounded with lush greenery, wildflowers and the fresh smell of citrus. With a population of around 2,000 people, this place is a little sanctuary of blonde stone architecture in a sea of green.

It truly is lovely to see someone who is not a native, love and appreciate Mallorca and the Mallorquin people. You have done the few places you covered justice. There’s so much more to see and do there, I hope many more tourists learn to appreciate the enormous amount of culture and history on our Island. But I have to disagree with the breakfast, after time away nothing says I’m home like the first bite of a warm ensaimada! Except maybe some butifarron, or a pa am boli.

I always go back to Mallorca, you just know it's a great place to be. So many lovely places to discover. I highly advice people to hire a care or go by train if you want to go to Valldemosa and Soller. If you go on an organized bustrip all you'll have to do is "hurry, hurry, hurry" and that was a big no/no!

As a fellow brit, who can't stand holiday resorts, but ends up at one from time to time because you know, family. I can also second that Mallorca is fantastic, and really worth exploring outside of the chavy resorts. For a start Palma is a genuinely interesting & historical city, Deia is stunning. Soller is a must visit along with Valldemossa. Great vid.

There is so much to see in Mallorca! Deia, Fornalutx, the West coast has the most stunning views! Son Marriog + Sa Foradada, Monasterio de Miramar, Formentor, Sa Calobra (very dangerous road!) Sant Elm, La Granja, the Sineu market, the many beautiful ermita's, we just fell in love with Mallorca when we first visited in 2013, the hospitality is so different from mainland Spain, now we are going back in August (had to move our dates because of the virus, hotel still closed at our 1st arrival date in June) we can't wait to explore more!

Hey man, I am from Mallorca and just stumbled upon your video. Nice one, hope you enjoyed being here. If you ever come back, you should consider visiting some of the small villages like Campanet, Sineu or Costitx. They are not so tourism-oriented, so they really capture the charm of rural life here, I'm sure you'll like them. Also I don't know if you were aware, but there's a place in Valldemossa called la Cartuja where Frederic Chopin used to live and it's gorgeous. Cheers mate

My hometown is Sóller, so 'Top Things You'd DIDN'T Know About Mallorca' doesn't really apply, but I didn't expect it to. Here's a thing many actually didn't know: the name Sóller comes from "sa olla" (the pot) as it exists in a large, bowl-shaped valley. I do appreciate you trying to pronounce place names correctly. It's a practice most Brits skip, but one that is appreciated in all parts of the world, so kudos for making the attempt. Try putting the accent on the first syllable, as it's written, and you'll be most of the way there.
Now if you can just get the rest of the UK to pronounce "paella" correctly. Pro tip: it does not rhyme with "the fella". If a person can figure out how to pronounce "rendezvous" and "Merlot" correctly, this should be a breeze.

Writing this post Covid 19 lockdown & the island is slowly welcoming back the tourists, but if you're thinking of coming don't forget your masks, as of 13/7/20 it's now mandatory/ law to wear them when out in public places.

Lived in Pollenca from 1986 to 2001. Lovely landscape, lovely village - but if you try to be part of the Pollençins - forget it. They like to take your money but will exclude you. The Brits there are mostly busy with playing Golf and drinking too much in an upper class way... Moved to Ibiza in 2001 finally, best choice ever. Although I keep an apartment in Palma which I use frequently. Palma is small Barcelona and just wonderful and has an international mix.

"Unlike infamous resort towns like Magaluf and Palmanova to the south, Port De Sóller came through the tourism overdevelopment stage in the 70s and 80s relatively unscathed." True, but there was a big push by developers and corrupt politicians to build up as much as possible. It's nice now, but it took a lot of battling by locals to keep it from turning into the kind of nightmares you see along the coasts on the mainland. It turned out fairly well in the end, but there are more buildings on the hill than there were ever supposed to be.

If you come to Soller and Port de Soller, you've got to visit Fornalutx and Biniaraix too.

Mallorca have such a beautiful history and culture... Conserved archives from medieval times, the folkloric tales, the oral poets... RAMON LLULL (one of the precursors of informatics). Mallorca have A LOT of importance in the whole catalan culture. There is also the preroman history, the neolitic artifacts... Thanks for appreciating it a little bite! Sand and sun it's ok... but all the time is boring. Discovering a "new world" is a total adventure! (You can have both things) :)

By the way All the European countries are so beautiful , for example Switzerland is much more beautiful than
other places in Europe from the natural scenery , PALMA because of its beaches and the Year around warm
Weather would be also my ideal place not to mention the Granary ils land near by there ....I like warm year around weather , England is so beautiful too but the weather is mostly Gloomy due to rainy cloudy climat .
Above all if someone has much money that can help to relocate to Europe ...

Suggest to avoid the Bulevar in Paguera....lots of dodgy shopkeepers and bad restaurants. Many rip off merchants. Strongly suggest to keep to the beaches, pool, your apartment, or hotel, and to shop for food at the supermarkets and you should be okay. Very rude and aggressive taxi drivers as well. A lot of anti-foreigner and anti-German sentiment amongst shopkeepers and locals despite the fact that they make their living from these very same foreigners, who are mainly German.

  • @marigaritaalburnamarco2268

    Thank you for your video!
I would like to recommend you to be careful teaching people about how to pronounce letters or towns because the LL ia a sound that even Spaniards for outside the old Catalan countries cannot pronounce and it is not a sound in between anything, in Catalan language or one of its variations, the Mallorquin, the double L has an especific sound that is far from what you are saying, apart from that Sóller has to be pronounce with a stress on the O and not on the E !!! Catalan is a language that has a latin root like Castilian ( SPANISH) FRENCH, ITALIAN, PORTUGUESE and ROMANIAN. Although Spanish has sounds that no other of these languages have and often are OF Arabic influence, so Spanish speaking people find it hard to pronounce some sounds in Catalan as well as in French or the rest.

Very nice. There is one criticism: Mallorquines are very much in favour of style and dress code. If you dress like the presenter, showing sprouting hair from your cheap undershirt, people will immediately judge you as a cheap tourist. It would be respectful to dress properly. Can be casual but not like that!

i'm surprised a brit knows all those things aboutmy island, usually british people only come here to get waisted at a pub lmao
A side note i would like to add is: In Mallorca they speak catalan in the family environment and at school and they don't like to be identified as spaniards, there's a strong independentist movement here along with catalonia.
