Logic Remote on the iPad is the best, most integrated "controller" to use with Logic Pro X. Learn why Logic Remote beats all other MIDI controllers.

Bonus Tip: a Mac can recognise an iPad as an "analog" input. All you need is a standard USB cable to connect it to the Mac and to enable it in Audio MIDI Setup on your Mac. Then anything played or played back in the iPad will be recorded in Logic as audio. Say you have an instrument only on your iPad and external to Logic Remote, you can record it as audio in Logic just like you record a guitar or a vocal so to say. THAT is a sick feature!
My iPad syncs via WIFI connection and provides a great controller, I am just now starting my home studio ( been about a year now) without any controller. This is absolutely amazing and very helpful. I find myself composing music in a sense of I don't have to feel limited. Well played Apple!
thanks for the tip man, appreciated
@@zionlee4594 no problem!
Been running the Moog apps like this. Super dope!
Incredible tip!!!. thanks a lot. I’ve got many instruments in my iPad I wish could have them in my iMac. Now I’ve got it!!!
What's also amazing with the app is that you can plug in an external midi device into the ipad using a lighting to usb adaptor and it will automatically send the midi data to logic, so it becomes a wireless midi interface!
So great, Chris. Really appreciate all of your videos and the way you present and explain things for us. Invaluable insights and excellent, friendly presentation style. Thanks so much for everything you're doing.
After spending days researching expensive replacement harder controller options to replace my now useless Tascam FW-1884 in a 64 bit world, to control Logic Pro X on my new Mac Mini M1, I stumbled across your video and tried out Logic Remote on my wife's iPad while watching. It is brilliant, does everything I needed but so much more. Thanks for the detailed walkthrough, excellent preso!
You’ve encapsulated the big fundamental problems with controllers just like that! Bravo for your honesty... I so need to revisit my iPad remote software...
I was literally in the process of trying to find a way to turn my iPad into a midi controller within logic and this video showed up. Amazing! Thank you!
This video is JUST what I needed. I moved from Logic to Ableton as my primary driver a couple years ago because I also needed the Live mode. Now that Logic 10.5 has taken on this same functionality in a easier to understand and read way, I wanted to make the move backs. I had dragged my feet though because I had learned and have been using the Push 2 for Ableton which is simply amazing and perhaps the most tightly integrated MIDI controller I have ever seen. I had used Logic Remote years ago but because the lack of tactile response didn’t use it to its potential. Now that the app has grown so much and you can buy larger iPads now I finally sold my Push 2 and purchased a new iPad AND the Novation Launchpad X for nearly half the price so I have a balance of tactile response and functionality. Your video showed me the potential of the App and the most important part of creating is not having to waste time and energy guessing on knobs or buttons or having to jump between the laptop and the interface you are using to write and create with. Thank you, cheers
Omg, I've had my Ipad just laying around the studio and i had no idea this existed!! THANK YOU for bringing this to my attention. So Awesome!
How is this not a bigger deal right!?!? I don’t have an iPad, but I should’ve known about this and I didn’t until Yesterday!! I was thinking about using sidecar for the mixing window, someone told me, “just use the companion app!” 🤯 then I found this video. Perfect timing!
@kapno Dude I have never written a comment on any CZcams video before …
I’m like 9 hours into a session right now and I was hell bent on figuring out how to utilize my iPad as a midi controller .
I love this video and the entirety of how you display everything you are sharing with the viewers.
5 Stars, my good man. Subscribed and liked immediately.
Can’t wait to send this to about 20 buddies who are going to lose their minds over this!
Thanks so much dude.
This is the exact video I needed. I spent the past 3 hours looking at possible control surfaces and even bought a Loupedeck (which I canceled) and I ended up on this video which I am incredibly grateful for. Thank you!
and here I am ahaha
An excellent demo, thank you! Downloaded it and followed along. Fantastic tool to add to the mix!
The Nectar Panorama P6 integrates with Logic Pro really well. The transport section, the faders, mute/solo buttons and the pads to control locators among other things have made my workflow so much faster and intuitive. I will give an iPad a try though! Great video!
15:03 - Yes! I was looking for the transport control on this app forever today. Thank you Chris!
His videos have been SOO helpful for me. Such an underrated channel!
Literally yesterday I was about to purchase a Komplete Kontrol KS2 controller - the idea of real time adjusting knobs and such (rather than using a mouse/keyboard) really turned me on... Chris, I'm so glad I saw this video today - I was just about to throw away $700 on their system ... I'd much rather spend half that on an iPad that looks like it's even more useful... I've got plenty of midi keyboards... seems like the ipad is a perfect solution. THANKS! (I subscribed)
Man, you are ahead of the pack in the LPX tutorial game.. So much inspiration :) Thank you!
Thank you Chris. Loved you out-do-the-LPX-box advice.
As always- your video is super informative and very helpful. No BS and great info. Thanks.
Very good, clear explanations. Well produced. Learned a lot.
ive said it for the longest time. Ever since I discovered the power of logic remote ive been floored. I bought some older iPads and minis and have them set up in different places of the studio. one in the mic room, one at the desk, and iPhone for transport control. amazingly powerful solution custom made for logic. and by the way, now having "sidecar" we CAN get those icons onto an iPad :).
Thank goodness I came across this vid! Saved me at least 3 bills, use a go pro keys normally but was gonna grab a mobile/desktop mini controller. GREAT VIDEO!
You are just killing me again with you level of knowledge of the thing. You are awesome!
Thanks a lot!!
Fantastic, what a great session and I just didn't know you can do so much with logic remote, my iPad will be on my desk from now on thanks to you
Fantastic segment on your journey to find the iPad remote as the perfect controller.
You could have just started straight away with the iPad and touted how great it is and just skipped the history behind your conclusion
but the history is so important to the big picture, I already have an iPad and I'm elated at using it control logic.
How awesome. Thanks, I love your channel and content

You've just helped me figure out if I should get a new keyboard controller or what. I've also been thinking about getting an iPad, so you've helped me with both decisions, giving me a 2 in 1 solution. Many thanks! Your vid's are great.
Right on! Well done, sir. I agree. Been using iPad as a LPX controller since Remote came out. Getting into Sidecar and Apple Pencil lately.
Totally cool.
I just started using my iPad mini with Logic and love it. After watching your video, well now I want a bigger iPad lol. Thanks man :)
I have so far only used the remote on my iPhone to press record and stop. I didn't realize that there was so much more functionality on the iPad. Thank you!
This is awesome beyond words! I have an iPad and had no idea Logic Remote could do all this. Thanks!
Great video thank you for a very insightful And easy to understand tutorial.
This is AMAZING...,thanks...,opens a door of perception
Great channel brother!!
I got the new firmware for my Feder port, and it works fantastic!! The iPad never worked for me. I’m glad to see that you found a work surface, that works for you!! Dope channel!!
JMP
Wow I’ve been missing out here getting the app on my I pad tonight! I’ve been Using the screen mirror function on my I pad for a while when I’m away home but never realised the benefits of getting the app! Getting this tonight! Ty for this tutorial and all your others! I’m fairly new to producing so all very helpful. 👊
I’ve been through this journey myself and have been disappointed with many manufacturers. The ssl nucleus has been the solution for me. It’s awesome and provides more functionality than other controllers. I’m finally mixing without the screen. I’ll post a video soon doing a comparison with the avid S1. Great vid!
Wow. Chris, thank you. Simply amazing, and you create some really great beats.
Good info. Thanks 🙏
That’s really awesome 👍👍 thanks a lot for this video, I will immediately jump from my Icon to the iPad 😊
Thank you for taking the time sir.
Kids just got me an iPad for my birthday.
I can intergrate it with my Mac mini running Logic.
Great video.
Always heard your voice in ur tutorials now good to see voice with u sir.. ur tutorials is just awesome ur a great tutor sir
Everything you said about searching for the right controller but falling back to using a mouse and keyboard, hesitation to use a tablet, etc. - it all resonated with me. I looked at the PreSonus FaderPort, and then turned my attention to the Behringer X-Touch, but I'm really reticent about buying a device that might just end up going unused. I like the idea of a physical controller, but you can't compete with the tight, dynamic integration of an iPad with Logic. I've never really been skittish about using the virtual interface with a mouse. Maybe an iPad is the right choice for me, too.
Logic Pro RULES!!!! ANd you rock too🥳thx for the great demonstration man!
I appreciate and enjoyed your review of the Logic Pro controller for iPad. I just discovered it because like you I was looking for a solution to that very same problem. Plus I’m working with limited space in my studio/bedroom. I didn’t know how much versatility and flexibility this controller had till I saw your review. I also use my iPad for my guitar rig with the boss katana. I’ve been using GarageBand and slowly moving over to Logic Pro X and it works for both. Great job! Will be following you for more great videos!
Can't believe anyone has gone this long without an iPad just for all the other wonderful things you can do with it. Like... watching Logic Pro Rules!
Excellent breakdown. Thank you.
Dude, you're the man. I love your page, thanks for all of these!
Just downloaded Logic Remote on my phone. Works like a charm!
Wasn't aware of this - really helpful - thank you.
Helpful video. Thanks!
Okay, well I’ve had this setup for a while but never really delved in that deep. Thank you for the insight I’m going to have another proper look at it 👍🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great information, I’ve used logic remote, and wasn’t aware of a lot of the features. Thanks (new subscriber)
Great vid! Love your content.
Wow! I was searching for a midi controller for logic and found this video. I’ve already got an iPad that I never use so you may have saved me a few hundred dollars!
Having a vocal booth away from my iMac, and being able to control my recording/punch-in etc from the iPad in the vocal booth is great!
Totally. I use it for the same thing. Super-helpful!
Love the videos!! Great work!!
Perfect timing. I was just thinking of buying an iPad to use as my Logic Remote.
Hey man, I know you've been getting bigger, but I just want to let you know that the way you speak, the way you let your personality shine through your videos will always interest more people. This has been my go to for logic information for about 6 months now and I can't glean the logic insight from other people as well as I do from you man. Keep it up
Ditto 🤗
Hell yeah. Love this and concur with entirely.
You’re the man!
Keep doing your thing dude!
Ahhh the LogicPro community is THE GOAT ! Hands down !!!!!
I’m no keyboardist by any stretch, but I am a percussionist/finger drummer, so that tactile feel is absolutely paramount to my experience as a MacOS/iOS producer. That said, I had only used LR fir transport, light mixing and tracking vocals from the booth. This vid helped to shine a light on how LR can be and do more for me in Logic. Granted, it has the look and feel of GarageBand, but I’m used to that by now, so this really ain’t as huge a stretch as I thought it’d be. Thanx, Chris (sp)!
Great video. Just bought Logic Pro and this video made me discover Logic Remote.
Thanks a million, Chris. I had actually ordered a Faderport 8 then saw this video and realized how I was underusing my Logic Remote app! I’m going to spend more time getting to know it. Have now canceled Faderport order!
Apple should build a hardware controller😎 that would be awesome thx for the vid mate
That would be super slick, although it seems very much in Apple's character to employ a more blank-slate touchscreen surface like an iPad than some sort of hardware controller with buttons and knobs. The iPad app can be redesigned to fit the current workflow and more easily adjusted to major changes like the addition of Live Loops.
Ehhh. Knowing Apple, if they made a standalone hardware controller, they’d cripple the logic controller to necessitate its purchase. I’m just siked that the logic iPad controller is as high-functioning as it is.
I wish. But they will likely be introducing Logic for iPad once all devices are running on Apple silicon. We should be able to use Mac apps on iOS and vice versa
I was using it for GarageBand for years. It’s the perfect solution!
Excellent vid! Thank you.
Great video Chris. I really had no idea it was capable of all of this.
Thank You.. I have been on the same journey, to work out what control surface would work with Logic X & Mac M1. This has helped me out no end, not to mention save me a few $.
i love using the ipad in remote with logic. i can sit anywhere in the room and create. thanks!! oh, and i have the apogee element 46. great machine!
I've had logic for a minute and do really light engineering - but about to dive into your ninja course! Just got an iPad and I'm nerding out. Thanks for the great content.
Great vid, i found it helpful and even though I really just wanted a standalone solution, it's not very practical with updates in the future if running different daws.
Great video. I came at this completely differently having made all my music in GarageBand before getting Logic. GarageBand on the iPad is simply brilliant and thankfully the Logic Pro remote is basically the GarageBand app optimised for Logic. Totally agree that despite having a decent midi controller with knobs and faders and transport button I just find it easier to use the mouse or the iPad.
Awesome presentation 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have the impact lx 88, it has faders, drum pads, integrates with Logic perfectly! I also use logic remote
Dope videos bro
I agree! Its the best companion to my setup.
Yeah. Just brilliant. Thanks 🙏
Excellent video
This is gold!!! Thanks man
Convinced me! -and I already had 5 iPads sitting around. No brainer, fantastic interactivity.
Thanks a ton for your videos. Just stumbled on this one today. What speakers are on your desk?
yeah man, thanks for the great video... I was hesitating to get an ipad almost just for Logic, and you just convinced me... So, awesome tutorial as always! And by the way, you look so much like a young version of Cypher in The Matrix, crazy!!!! Cheers! ;-)
first off, who thumbs down these videos? Ok, I also just got my iPad working with Logic and it's amazing. I use it with my KB and augment my playing. it's terrific. Great video!
People without iPads... jerks
amazing! thanks man. I´ve already had an Ipad and I didn´t know. WOOOW!!
bro you just saved me a ton of time and frustration learning midi controllers
I didn’t even know
Thank you 🙏🏼🤓
thanks. you nailed the problem with so many controllers ( I have a kk88 mk II - still not happy ( w Ableton and cubase ) )
I really love the versatility of the iPad while using it as a controller for logic, but there’s only a few. things that really get to me. The first is that the piano & drum pad instrument window are not consistently responsive to when you are live playing on it. It’s great to do simple one off notes, but if you’re trying to finger drum on there, its almost a no go. The second is that there’s no menu options when you hold anywhere. It would be really convenient to have the same right click window features (somewhat) available at the touch of a screen on the controller app. Also, there’s no real fun way to quantize in the app. This app still has quite a long way to go, but it has still come very far from what it used to be years ago. I definitely recommend this as its free!
If you’re looking for other software for other DAWS, I highly recommend Touch OSC, which is has a small, one time fee of 5 bucks.
Love the channel, keep it up!
I was using the Apple wireless keyboard to start recording from the vocal booth. This is far better because now you can be in the booth eq’ing the mic and not running back and forth. I’m using my iPhone but will be setting up the iPad 🤘🖥
One very good think wad the speed dial on novation nocturn and nocturn keyboard. The knob was controlling any parameter where the pointer of your mouse was. No need to midi learn or anything like that. Just point the virtual knob if your plug-in, turn the physical knob and that was it. Although there were 8 other knobs in the controller, I only used that one (and it was infinite and touch sensitive).
It's a shame automap stopped working though.
Just a note Chris: with the pitch mode selected on the keyboard, swipe left-right across the keys.... not up down the same key. Pitch is very cool... I use it a lot! Mmmmm! I got to teach you?? How cool is that. Thanks for all the videos Chris. You’re a Huge blessing.
👍🏻👏🏻💪🏻 great tutorial.
It’s incredible ! Just got it today .. I’m a happy camper.
Hi Chris! Thanks as always for your amazing videos, and I look forward to using my ipad with logic remote... looks great.
Quick question: I was looking through your playlists but I don't think I found a "From the basics" playlist. Meaning, I've been using LPX for a few years, but not very efficiently, I'm sure. I'm wondering if there's a playlist that takes us step by step to make sure we're going through each process as efficiently as possible. Thanks as always!
Wow, you too have an Eleven Rack! Cool. I use Logic remote on my iPhone. Interesting to see your review of this on the iPad. Thanks.
On your phone 😱
Thank you for posting. I was just looking at Launchpad Pro as an option. But watching their videos of having to look at the screen and then at the launchpad pro.. the Loop playing and multi interface sells me on the ipad.. and I already have a 2 year old ipad... so more than up to the task. Will be jumping into Logic with a Mac mini M1 or hopefully an iMac 23” M1x in March (Hoping?). Oh I have Native Instruments Komplete M32 keyboard. It’s great. I got it when it first came out at $99 or $108.. now it’s more expensive with import duty and everything going up.. but it’s still a steal.. more importantly it sits on my keyboard tray in my desk so it’s out of the way till I want to use it. Then just slide it towards me.. there it is.. it’s shallow enough to clear the table in the tray. After touch, good keyboard for GarageBand and later this year Logic... and Komplete Kontrol has a lot of options... will be going for one of their big packs in the Summer Sale (50% off typically for their packages.....) Get the $1,200 package for $600, then I have more than tons of looping and cinematic background tracks for my upcoming indie shorts and movies I am developing. Ok, I’ll check out your other videos next. Thank you for posting.. shared this with some other future logic users already. :)
Thanks man 👍
Hi Chris - very helpful, thanks! By the way, I thought you were great as Cypher in the Matrix.
I’ve been using logic remote for a while, I don’t think they’re updating the interface anytime soon.
But your point about fader length is true, I’ve got a Nektar controller with about 60mm of fader throw, it’s pathetic for making fine adjustments.
Thanks for all your videos, friend! By the way, I just bought a Nektar Panorama P6 which automatically assigns to Logic, both DAW and instruments and everything shows on it's screen. I think it doesn't get the attention it deserves by producers. But, I agree that the best controller in the way you are mentioning it, the "apple" way of "you just do" should be the iPad, I have to get one when I can.
Very good video, the intro sums up nicely the problem of dedicated hardware and evolving software... like when Jobs introduced the first iPhone.
My question is: does LR record the note velocity when playing a piano for example?
A little tip: if the song's key signature is defined in the arrangement, the chords (or notes) on the remote keyboard etc will adapt the to the key of the song as it plays.
Just download it, fantastic.
I just got a Novation Launchkey mini mk3... It's really cool and has its purpose. But know now that my iPad can be used like this is amazing!
