Without Beresi there wouldnt have been the Maldini we all got to watch and admire. Same way Nesta wouldn't have reached the level he reached without Maldini there teaching him. Beresi was ridiculously good, so strong in the tackle for quite a short CB. Maldini learnt so much off of him when he played at Left back and moved onto partnering him at CB. If I had to pick one id give the slight edge to Maldini just because he was a little more mobile in his prime and could match Beresi in his reading of the game, tackling, timing, leading organising etc.

No mention of Cannavaro? He was immense at the 2006 world cup, captaining the winning team. Held Italy together against Australia when they went down to 10 men. And he outjumped Per Mertesacker on that corner he had no right to win against Germany. Also started the move for them to score their second in that match when he tackled Podolski. He also turned the fortunes of several clubs he signed for like Parma. When he left Parma they went bust soon after... He was so fast. Neither Baresi or Maldini were close in the speed stakes. Maldini was a left back. He was a good cb but not as good as Nesta, cannavaro, Baresi or even Costacurta. Maldini is the best player out of any of those but as a left back

Maldini learned from/off of baresi, if I was to be asked that question I would pick maldini he’s like a more polished version of baresi in a way and has experience in left back. Either way franz Beckenbaur clears all.

Franco Baresi was the best ever CB who could play also as a sweeper.
Maldini was all round defender who could play in all position in back line with equal effect.
Third is Nesta - The modern gr8 Italian defender. Without him Italy and AC Milan would struggle from 2003 - 2012.

We agree that Nesta and Maldini might be better than Cannavaro when you look at their Career, but man the level Cannavaro recahed during the 2006 WC i wonder if a player will ever repeat that. Zidane is the only opponent who scored against them, on a penalty kick, that shouldn't have been given.

Maldini was left back though, and in my opinion, Nesta was way better than Cannavaro, despite he was too easy to get injured, but no doubt, Baresi was better than Maldini and Cannavaro, but there will be an serious argument for Scirea, Bergomi, Vierchowod if they were in the list.

Baresi and Nesta are the two best centre backs I've ever seen for Italy. Maldini was an excellent centre back as well but his prime was at left back (best ever in that position IMO) and he falls just short of the Baresi and Nesta level in central defence.
Cannavaro was a brilliant defender also but he's not as good as all the guys I just mentioned tbh.
