I think they could make it work. RDJ is so damn good he can play a variant of Tony Stark that turned to evil after the snap in attempts to get back to his daughter and pepper. Proving he would do anything for his family but gets lost in the evil ways he adapts to.

I always thought Dr Doom should be introduced as a foil to Tony Stark Iron Man. I wanted to see Dr Doom portrayed as a leader of Latveria that has tech that rivals Stark. This is going to be very interesting.

He’d have to have been a successor or something after Viktor knows he’s going to pass.. maybe even some mind transfer shenanigans through magic or tech (part of why he’s so crazy as a character), but it would be a bit strange if it was just Tony but his parents death made him chase down magic, unless it was all a trap by Doom, might just feel a little flat… we need to feel why he’s so powerful after his last 3 outings… sure, he’s “powerful” in fan4stick and and the old ones in relation to their respective “worlds”.. but they just didn’t make him the villain that represents a huge terror to any universe he inhabits… I even liked the first Tim Story one, but the silver surfer was rough for me..
My pitch for his return would be in armor wars have ultron return, but at the very end reveal that supeior iron man was behind it and recreate the avengers end scene where it shows thanos turn and smile and have it be RDJ instead.

This actually makes sense... if you think about it. When the multiverse was introduced and Dr. Strange cast the spell that brought others that knew who spider-man was into the main universe. Then another version of Tony Stark could have come into the main universe and would take the role of infamous Iron Man.

I don't believe they would do something like that because Kevin Fiege knows that would piss off a lot of people. Robert Downey Jr can come back to play a variant of Tony Stark, that's no problem. However, if they want him to be evil... he can pretty much become Superior Iron Man. But for Dr Doom, we need somebody separate, entirely, to play him.
I think it would be cool if they lay out a way where even since Iron Man 1... Victor has been in the shadows. Or have him somehow escape the alternate reality that the fantastic four will be coming from. Have him start off as a good guy then ultimately, with the loss of his world.... He loses it and becomes Doctor Doom. But that's just my opinion.
