Really great explanation here David but I'm confused by your comment at 11.50 where you say blue would be "stuck to leeward". Surely blue establishing an overlap to leeward would give them room at the mark here? What rule am I missing that makes this not the case?

yellow enters the zone clear ahead, so blue has to give room to yellow under 18.2b. this means blue has to allow yellow to pass the mark closely
