  • I had to be honest with you guys, and it feels really good to finally talk about this! There have been a few things that contributed to me losing track of my personal style which I talk about in detail in this video. And I also talk about my plan to find my personal style again!
This is episode 1 of "Finding My Personal Style again" series #FMPSA
You can find the whole series here: • SERIES: Finding My Per...
In this new series, I am diving deep into what's wrong with my current wardrobe and what I love about style/fashion on ME and no one else. I make intentional, well-thought-out plans and declutter my wardrobe to reduce the overall ANXIETY that I face with my current wardrobe.
I can't wait to see what I learn about my personal style and take you along on this journey with me! And most of all, I hope you learn something too ❤️

Hola Emily, I love the way you opened up your heart to all of us, in the sense that it makes you feel strong and brave enough to ACT. I need that energy and courage to change things in my own life, specially at work, and it made me think about that spirit of being true and genuine to yourself. And make the first step towards your real «you».
Gracias! Kisses and hugs from Valencia

Thanks for your honesty. I am a 55, mother of 2 twenty year olds, am a full time care giver, work 2 part time jobs and am a full time online reseller. And I recently lost 50 pounds. FYI, your personal style keeps evolving your entire life! During times of transition, I discard, donate, sell items I am not in love with, keeping only the staples. If I can't decide, I pack it away and revisit those items later. I also only put current seasonal items in my main wardrobe. Lastly, I document in list form items I never want to retire, even if I am not currently wearing them, so I won't be tempted to re-purchase them later, forgetting I already own them. Hope this helps give you some ideas from a veteran clothes hoarder!

I love how wholesome and authentic you are. I have gone through a similar struggle, I had a distinct sense of personal style through my 20s, until my body changed a lot and I didn't know how to deal with that other than cover it up. I felt very frumpy and not myself. My wardrobe, albeit a lot smaller, has also been confused the past few years; experimenting with other styles and colour palettes inspired by YT and Pinterest. Only recently I've gotten back in touch with myself and my wardrobe is starting to look more curated. I'm excited for this series, it's refreshing to see content creators share their own style journey instead of presenting a blueprint that is supposed to apply to everyone.

I think your awareness of the whole fast fashion/slow fashion issue is the important thing - we can't become minimalists overnight. I totally understand the anxiety you feel as I get depressed when I open my socks and undies drawer. As an older person who has seen many trends come and go, I admire you for your classic style, and you should be proud of the way you show us that we can all bring that style into our own wardrobes, no matter what age we are. Don't be too hard on yourself- most of us can relate to your anxiety about having too many clothes and wanting to make mindful and ethical purchases, whilst still being able to make use of what we have. You are doing the best you can!

Your honesty is so appreciated! Especially with so many haul videos out there. It's not sustainable to buy and wear that many clothes. Adopting minimalist mindset is a journey, we are human and can relapse here and there, but knowing that we need to work on our self and reassess is so important. Very much looking forward to your series in finding your style again and the "minimalist" journey. Best!

  • @Orphiliac
    @Orphiliac Před 3 lety +1

Hi Emily! In 2019 I was in exactly the same position as you’re today. I realized everything that I owned was to please other people not myself. And I was sick of feeling myself miserable outside of my house wearing those clothes.
I breathed, packed all my clothes without thinking too much, only feeling, took to a second hand shop, sold everything and started a new journey.
I 📌 on Pinterest everything I saw that really brought me joy. And surprisingly, it was so easy and simple. Most of them was blazer, jeans, t-shirts or blouses.
I bought everything that I needed (just a couple of pieces) brand new bc I knew that I was taking the best decision for myself at that moment.
It’s been 2 years almost and I really have never looked back regretting, even one second. I don’t miss any piece and it REALLY reduced my anxiety.
Last year for Christmas I bought a couple of silk blouses in a second hand shop and today these are my favorite piece of clothing. More conscious of my choices. More me.
    I hope it helps you.
It’s ok to feel this way, it’s human, it’s important for us as human, as women to keep our image faithful to who we are.
    Love from Brazil 🇧🇷

I've been a piano teacher/performer (so lots of preppy clothes and night dresses), worked at a herbalist shop (boho style required :D ), and now i'm changing to psychology! Now... I came to realize what i liked in the majority of those styles and tried to pinpoint the things that were common in all of them, and then i cleaned my closet. I was pleasently surprised that now i love all my clothes, i dont try to acomodate to others. But i still dressing for occasions (for exº: i go to work in confortable but classic shoes/with heel -preppy style-, i like layering necklaces and long dresses- boho style- but with less paterns and classic cuts, etc. ). I also try to be inspired by other styles, without trying to copy them or to be so outward focused (by constantly seeing others styles and ideas). Just be you!!

Well done for showing vulnerability and taking us along on your journey that way! Finding your own, sustainable style can be really hard and I'm learning myself that it's an iterative process of learning and discovery. Enjoy it and drop the guilt, you're doing so much through your channel to help us reduce our consumption. Thank you!

Fashion has always been so fun for me and an exciting way to express myself, I just want to keep that fun in my life but do it mindfully, ethically and intentionally 😌🙏💜 thank you for watching. I remember about 3/4 years ago I learnt so much about ethical and sustainable fashion and there was SOO much information out there, it overwhelmed me and I lost my personal style too! I have had 2 more children since then and I've felt more lost than ever. The best you can do is be yourself and in that you'll find your style again! I'm looking forward to following along on your journey with this x

I’ve also just realised that sharing my style on CZcams sometimes makes me feel intimidated by potential negative comments, and I really want to stop being afraid of that ♥️ thank you for this comment, it got me thinking a lot. Emily you are being very hard on yourself. It is very difficult to go against the grain of a consumer culture. And making the kind of changes that you are trying to make takes more time than you are allowing yourself. Don’t forget the pandemic has added to our changing life styles. I’m 68 years old and the clothing that worked for me even four years ago has very little use now. My goodness! Even going to a wedding now is so complicated! Venues range from semi formal to outdoor garden to camping weekends! LOL! Go easy on yourself! All is well.

Don’t be too hard on yourself, that’s a ton of changes! When I lost 35 lbs. two years ago and needed new clothes (I altered what I could, but two sizes is a lot), I completely changed my style. I was getting close to 60, and was suddenly just sick of trying to fit in by wearing the California Boho style. I didn’t think it suited me anymore, so I went back to the simple, classic style of my 20-40s, updated as needed. I’m so much happier with my style and wardrobe now. Ironically, that Boho style is now becoming popular in other countries, but it looks very aging-hippie in my age range. I’m not old enough to have been an original hippie, but this style made me look as if I was ten years older.

Emily!! First of all, thank you for being so honest and open about this, you are clearly quite emotional about this and I hope you're not giving yourself too hard a time about it. Everything you said is so relatable!! I thought I'd got to quite a good space in my wardrobe but sometimes I feel so confused and uninspired. Don't get me wrong, I have A LOT of work still to do, I still shop, as mindfully as I can, but for example I thrifted a dress last weekend for £5, which I now am doubting massively, I think it's a fantasy self dress :( Anyway, I can completely relate and especially with life as it is, the pandemic, working from home, not going out, blah blah blah, it's really hard. I am so excited for this series!! Thank you again for your transparency and taking the time to address this and involve us along the way. Keep a smile on that beautiful face xxx

Hi Emily, thank you very much for this honest and very relatable video. I’ve been feeling the same way but didn’t understand why. I have a closet full of office clothes that I can’t get rid of (bc we will eventually return to work) but I’ve been working from home for over a year, so I only reach for my old casual wear/sweats/leggings. Which isn’t in line with my personal style. However, because I’ve also been trying to have a low consumption lifestyle, I haven’t wanted to buy new casual loungewear. So I’m very excited to see your journey! I recommend Alyssa Beltempo on CZcams for finding your style and inspiration with working with your current wardrobe. Good luck!

I was, and am, so bored during the pandemic that I developed an online shopping addiction. I have to cut my enormous wardrobe down to size. When it cools down here in California, which won’t be until November, I’m going to tackle it. I’m going to really analyze my bad purchases, and keep notes, so I don’t repeat the same mistakes.

  • @sunmadien

I learnt something a long time ago from my brother. As I was constantly moving cities like every year. He said have just enough clothes to fit in one suitcase so it’s easier to move. At the time, my shoes alone took up a whole suitcase on their own and maybe I could squeeze some in boxes that weren’t full. Bear in mind that I live in a county with 4 distinct seasons and winter jackets take a lot of room in suitcases but I saw the wisdom in his advice and it really helped me keep my wardrobe small with only items I actually wear. Having a small wardrobe has enabled me to adapt easily when my life style changed as I could easily swap for clothes that fit my current lifestyle and I didn’t always have to buy that much since my wardrobe was already small. My actual wardrobe is big but the clothes in it are only a handful 😂.I tend to have a capsule wardrobe every season of 12 to 14 items not counting jackets or shoes and some items can be borrowed from other seasons. I don’t necessary count or is strict with the number but 4 sweaters for the winter is plenty I found as I have cardigans too that could go with my t-shirts and sleeveless tops from the summer. So am not buying any more sweaters until I let one go.I also had to learn not to be emotionally attached to my clothing. I see a lot of ppl do this and I was the same. Still had my prom dress in my closet or several evening gowns I had worn only once but I learnt it is more rewarding to give it to someone else and let it have a life outside of my closet as I am not wearing it. I used to go out and buy a dress for every wedding. I stopped doing that I wear my work clothes to weddings . I work in an office so I’ve got dress pants and skirts which I could bear with a fancy top. Or a full suit which I wear to work with a lacy cami works for weddings as well. I look forward to you documenting your journey. It will definitely be eye opening. Mine was.

Please don’t beat yourself up about this. I am a 66 year old whose style has changed over the years. Also my body shape changed so that means changing or adapting style. I have hung onto clothes and also sold or given them to charity over the years . It’s perfectly normal. I also have clothes that represent different aspects of my life so there is no way I could reduce the number down to even 50! I do what others here have suggested - pack away out of season clothes and formal stuff I don’t wear often. I’ve recently retired so have quite a lot of formal work clothes but I’m experimenting in restyling how I can adapt them to a different lifestyle. If any don’t fit in, I’ll pass them on. I’m so glad I didn’t de clutter some items over the years as I find new ways to wear them. I don’t believe we have ‘one style’ but our personalities and lives mean we have different styles that suit occasions and moods.

    • @EmilyElizabethMay
      @EmilyElizabethMay  Před 3 lety

Thank you Vilma, this is so helpful 😌 I definitely wont be focussing on having a certain number of clothes, not at all. Just making sure everything I own really reflects me and my style and no one else. It's been tricky trying to be myself here on the channel but also trying to show a variety of different styles different people like, but I've realised that the most important thing is to just be my authentic self and that will help inspire people with their own styles. I totally agree about the "one style" thing. I've always felt as though I like different styles and I dress for my mood. So I have kept that in mind when going through the series 💜 Thank you again for watching, and I hope you enjoy the rest xxx

Paula, you are bang on! 💜 I know this video well, it was one of the first videos where I showed my appreciation for vintage fashion and I was so excited about it!!! And then sadly I lost several subscribers from releasing that video. I know that's not the important thing, but at the time I thought "wow, I've just shown part of my authentic self and people don't like it."
I look back on this now and I'm like "EMILY, you idiot! The most important thing is to be yourself and the right people will stay and the wrong people will go. And thats OKAY."
So yes, you are so right. Mixing vintage in with modern pieces is 100% me and always has been, and I lost my way a little bit in my mid 20s when I was chasing trends.
I hope to speak about this all towards the end of the series in a little video about what I have learnt. Your comment really got me thinking and made this so much more clear in my mind. So for that, thank you so much 💜 xxx

I agree completely I loved that video, too!!! as I’m 47 and have some older items which I love to mix in with more modern clothes and I loved those videos. I know that numbers can be stressful as I’m starting my nutrition business and social media can also be a thorn in our side ! one of my friends once said ‘comparison is the thief of joy’ - try not to look at the numbers and more the quality of people you are attracting!

Style is not something you've found once und have for the rest of your live, it's a process. You don't have to feel bad about it. If your clothes don't make you happy anymore, just get rid of them (responsibly) and enjoy discovering the new you. I have big wardrobe and don't even have an "excuse" to need it for my job. I'm trying to be more mindfull, and you are a big inspiration, but I'll never be a minimalist in this area, it's just too much fun, fashion and style are my way to express my creativity.

this is interesting. Maybe you can keep 2 separate clothing collections. One that's just you, your favorites. The other collection can be things you received from colabs, etc...For me, I would really need to keep the real me separate while having all the other sort of work related things and varieties to show your viewers in another area. I can totally understand how you can feel scattered in this line of work.

What you can do is: keep only the clothes that fit your own style and for your general videos on style, trends and fashion you can show pictures of other people to show what you are talking about (from Pinterest, Instagram, etc..) It will actually help your viewers to understand how to keep your own style, tweek the trends to your advantage, use what you have in your closet and buy with intention!!!!

But I just knew that the amount of things I have/the lack of storage I have was affecting my anxiety and mental clarity. I hope I can reduce it and find what I love again, and also still be able to express myself creatively 😌😌♥️ As for you, if it doesn’t give you any anxiety then absolutely keep and treasure your things 😻 I think that’s so nice to be able to wear items you’ve had for years and years and mix old with new ♥️ xxx
