      Personally; I would have just changed the Entire story, different villains, different way in which Will is involved... this movie just Really ruined the series for me personally; It is my least favorite because of how forced the fast paced storyline is and how much lore they redo
      There could have been Such an awesome redemption for the series if it had better writers and people who actually understood what made the originals so amazing, it could have been awesome. This movie is just one I don't really consider canon

      Honestly ALOT. Jack has given away the compass like 6 times already in the series and nothing ever happend. Salazar is cool but he wasn't that great of a bad guy cause he had no real story. I truly tought as well that when salazar was hunting the pearl before the island that will and the flying Dutch men would come in to save/help them. Barbossa was a little bit wasted but liked how he died but could ofc been better. Carina and Henry has no real chemistry or development and like you said yourself a good love intrest needs to do at least one of these things well for it to work, remember how absolutely SMITTEN Will was by Elizabeth in the first movie when we first saw them? Goddamn now that's chemistry! 😂

    Another weird thing about this movie is that the flashback where we see Jack's origin story his former captain inherits him the compass, when in the second movie we learned Jack bought it from Tia Dalma (Calypso). So... Which is it???

    • @sethboyum7420
      @sethboyum7420 Před 16 dny +7

      I have heard a fan theory that Jack bought the compass from Tia Dalama on the captain's behalf and then was given it as we saw in this movie. Not sure how I feel about that idea, but I haven't heard any better. (When Disney was still doing their "Disney Adventures" digest magazine and occasionally had short "Pirates of the Caribbean" comics in it, there was one expanding on the "Tia Dalama gave it to Jack" version. Extremely lucky in hindsight, the writer framed the story as Jack telling a tale to his friends years after the fact.)

  • @sethboyum7420
    @sethboyum7420 Před 16 dny +15

    "But it could've been great..." is a fair assessment of the movie, IMHO. I enjoyed it for what it was and agree that the ending for the series as a whole is good, but it's the weakest of the series. My understanding is that Disney is looking at a franchise reboot, so any further movies will probably be their own thing. Regarding a couple of the plot holes you discussed:
    • (20:53) My understanding was that Barbossa used the compass to track Jack. We did see him getting it from the witch before, after all.
    • (26:36) I think the idea was that Barbossa never thought about finding the Trident for himself until Salazar returned. So, when he'd found the journal 20-some years ago, he just thought it was a used notebook that he could leave his then-infant daughter for the ruby.
    A couple of plot holes and discrepancies that bothered me with the movie:
    • The "Flying Dutchman" is back in its cursed, fishy form and sailing our seas, when "At World's End" showed that that only happened when the captain abandoned his duty of ferry souls to the afterlife. I'm not sure what the writers had in mind, but it really makes it look like Will abandoned his duty, too within a couple years of the "At World's End" stinger for no explained reason.
    • The whole deal of Jack "betraying" the compass by bartering it away was ill-explained, considering that we'd seen the compass change hands a lot before, albeit in some cases of Jack just loaning it. I wish the rules had been better explained.
    • The backstory with the compass seen here contradicts Tia Dalma commenting that she sold the compass to Jack directly in "Dead Man's Chest."
    • In one of those "can't unsee it" moments, Davy Jones's claw is depicted as being on his right arm, when, in the other movies, it was his left.

    Cool action and occasional great moments. The writing seemed half-hearted, compared to the rest of the movies. Mostly I was bothered by the re-writing of the story of the compass. No, it SHOULD have been great. The ingredients were all there, to be amazing. Unlike On Stranger Tides, that I originally didn't like all that much when I saw it in the theater, but grew to appreciate it, even love it after rewatching it a few times, I did not enjoy this movie after rewatching it again after that first watch. Everyone just feels off in this, especially Jack, where in On Stranger Tides he was competent and capable despite the flash and occasional buffoonery, this guy is just a buffoon, which is a great premise to start with. Sparrow losing his mojo is a good idea with what happened in the beginning, and gets it back at the end, but he never gets it back this entire movie. Having said that, I will be watching this reaction, I want to see if you notice it too, Lmao

    • @saintjimmy_ajh
      @saintjimmy_ajh Před 16 dny +5

      THIS GUY GETS IT
      The very first movie shown us exactly the type of person Jack Sparrow is, with his superpower of essentially being able to talk his way out of any conflict, with at least decent swordsman skills if he really needed it. Dead Man’s Chest Jack he was terrified of Davey Jones and was trying to escape his fate from the Kraken and then At Worlds End Jack had gone a little mad after spending what I’d assume felt like an eternity alone in the Locker. On Stranger Tides I felt took him back to the first film, only this time it actually shows the audience exactly how he thinks and assesses his surroundings and actually understood what his character was capable of!
      Then this one seems like it was written by people who had maybe only seen the first movie once and only too away that “he’s the funny man and he’s always drunk. Just look at how he walks and how much he loves rum”

    I think another plot hole is the fact that Barbosa gave away the book and ruby when he was cursed for years. Even though collecting all of the Aztec gold broke the curse he could have very well used the trident as an alternative. Especially if it is implied that he spent a lot of time researching it

    • @sethboyum7420
      @sethboyum7420 Před 16 dny +5

      I don't think so. Carina and Henry are ostensibly about the same age, suggesting that she was born shortly after "At World's End," meaning that Barbossa didn't get the journal when he was cursed. For that matter, since the curse came from Aztec gods, would it could as a sea curse that the Trident could break in the first place?

  • @archerpool

    Aside from the retcon of the compass, which Jack originally got from Tia, there’s a giant retcon that largely goes missed because the story of how Jack became a pirate is subtly placed in the story and has some unanswered questions. A story that is undone by showing Jack as a young pirate. While it’s hinted at in the film, the novelisation confirms what I’m about to say and it’s a far better story than the retcon. Jack joined the Navy and his first job was on a ship called the Wicked Wench which was transporting slaves. Jack disagreed with it and ended up freeing the slaves as the Navy turned against him which resulted in the ship being sunk. Jack then made the deal with Davy Jones to bring the ship back as The Black Pearl. Some people theorise that Jones made the debt 100 souls because it was 100 slaves Jack freed. Others think the slaves died and Jack’s trade with Jones was the Black Pearl as in those who went down with the ship and who Jack put his own life on the line to save them. Either way it’s actually a brilliant backstory that they kinda ruined.

  • @JamesSmith-bg6dk
    @JamesSmith-bg6dk Před 16 dny +55

    I deeply hate this movie. It's like the people who made it didn't even watch the originals. They get such basic things wrong, like how they forgot that Tia Dalma/Calypso gave Jack his compass. Jack is out of character for nearly the whole film. He only does one or two deliberately clever things in the entire movie and is a buffoon the rest of the time. The writers also don't understand that being the captain of the Dutchman isn't a curse, it's a responsibility. Davy Jones turned it into a curse for himself when he became overcome with bitterness and apathy and refused to do his duty. Will readily took on the responsibility of ferrying the souls of the dead, so it wouldn't have been a curse for him and he wouldn't have become disfigured. The movie also ruins the perfect bittersweet ending of the original trilogy by replacing it with this facile rectification of Will's fate. I also hate how Jack's entire outfit was given to him by the crew of his first ship. The original costume designers (with input from Johnny himself) crafted Jack's outfit to look like it had been amassed over a lifetime of pirate adventures. And I don't even know where to begin with that nonsensical post credit scene that implies that somehow Davy Jones returned. The only thing I like about this movie is Javier Bardem's performance. In a horrible, ugly, illogical and contrived movie he stands out as a memorable and captivating villain.

      @wyterabitt2149 Před 15 dny +1

      What? A young Jack gave the compass to the captain, there is nothing that doesn't add up there. Jack ends up getting it back.
      Jack is very badly out of character, but also a complete mess in real life. Alcohol abuse, depression, and a severely bad relationship etc. You see him slowly get better throughout the film, probably as he is forced to stay in character and spend at least less time self destructing.
      Just because the job is something that needs doing, doesn't mean that being trapped forever, unable to set foot on land more than once every 10 years, and if you ever stop turning into a monster isn't a curse. He chose to do it, but it was still a curse just one he took on.

      @@wyterabitt2149 if Jack “gave it to the captain and got it back,” why would the captain have to give him instructions on how to use it?
      One of the tributes Jack is given is a bead dangle that was canonically made by Jack years later (and uses one of Jack’s own gold teeth).
      At what point in the timeline would both Jack and Barbossa have known Carina’s mother? They’re either bitter enemies, or one is dead, and then Jack doesn’t see Barbossa between the events of the 3rd and 4th movies, which (if she’s roughly the same age as Henry) is the only time Carina could be conceived.
      There’s plenty that doesn’t add up, and just points to the laziness of the new writers, and a bad foreshadowing of Disney execs signing off on cheap cash grabs. No need to cope and defend the multibillion dollar industry when they pump out bad product.

    Yes bad writing... but my theory is that Jack knew once he gave up the compass he knew Salizar would be released and him and Barbosa made some sort of plan to be able to reunite him with his daughter because Barbosa wanted to die but wanted to see his daughter. Yes far fetched but better than the writing lol also they couldve made Salizar so much more scarier than anyone like even the flying dutchman steered clear because his ship can be broken but it can be brought back together again.

    As someone who read the Rob Kidd’s “Jack Sparrow books” as a kid, how they used the Trident of Poseidon on this film rubbed me the wrong way. Sure, they can say it holds all the curses of the Seas, but to NOT use that kind of Chekhov’s gun during the movie (like the mystical powers we have seen in other movies). The Trident is the weapon of a god and it looks like a common coral reef. Maybe that is the look that they were going for and I just didn’t like it. The characters were okay on paper, Will’s kid looking for how to free his father and Barbosa’s ‘unsuspecting’ daughter who is looking for a treasure dear to him AND her. Barbosa coming back was great, but I agree his last moments were undermined by how much he didn’t bond with her.

    The biggest failure of the franchise is never showing how jack became a pirate in the first place, he refused to move slave for beckett, freed them in return, 100 souls saved, him and his ship was sunk in the process, he made a deal woth davy jones for a little more time woth his ship which jones brought back blackened by the fire and jack reanamed it the pearl, thats how jack became "evil" he was never a bad person he just got betrayed alot.

    You are completely wrong on this one point. You said that Barbosa didn't care about his daughter which was why he gave her away.
    Barbosa did in fact care about his daughter. That's why he left her with another family along with the journal and the ruby in the hopes that it would help pay for a better life for her. Barbosa is a pirate so in his and anyone else's eyes who's not a pirate would view him as a bad person. He didn't want his daughter to grow up around a bad person like him that's why he had to give her away. He didn't want the same wretched life for her.

    You can tell that they wanted to make a good movie, but they were very inexperienced, and Disney was at the beginning of choosing diversity instead of good writers, and Johnny Depp was emotionally unstable, but they could have used that to say Jack was at the end of his rope, ready to die and pushing everyone away until he had this experience revitalizing his desire to be a pirate.
    But very bad writers

    The first movie that I had ever seen from POTC was actually DMTNT and it didn't attract me at all - I only watched it later simply for Orlando Bloom when I got older.
    I have a few bones to pick with this movie:
    - I hate how they turned Jack into this drunkie, who only ever succeds by luck or others doing the work for him. It made him completely lose his charm and maybe there was a little redemption in the last scene, but still it was very unappealing,
    - they could have done so much more with Henry's character. When the movie begins it feels like he will be standing right next to Jack in plot relevancy and we would get to know him like we did with Will in the first movie, but the only thing they truly develop in this movie is his want to free his father, what could have been written much better. For example - if he was in the navy, why did they make him so dumb to things including sailing and also so clumsy?
    - maybe the reason for this is how excellet Will and Elizabeth's romance was set up over the inital trilogy, but the relationship between Karina and Henry is so forced - I feel like they wanted to do too much way too quickly, that's why I didn't really find myself involved.
    - the plot holes and inconsistensies are so hard for me to bear, because so many things seem pointless and other's not expanded enough
    The only things that made me enjoy this movie partly is Barbossa and his relationship with Karina. Despite them not having a lot of time in the movie together, I felt every emotion Barbossa was potraying and I wanna praise Geofrey Rush for his performance, because he is a saving grace in this movie.
    I also found Salazar's past interesting and his reasons were clear, what I really liked.
    The endings that the characters got I think fit them somehow - it makes sense Elizabeth and Will stopped being pirates and settled to live on an island, since they never really wanted to become pirates in the first place, it was all pretty much forced upon them in some way. Jack continuing to sail is also pretty logical and it made me happy they didn't force him into settling down.
    Overall the movie wasn't as bad as some people say, but it definetly wasn't living up to what was set before it. The only thing I am happy about from this movie is seeing how everyone ended up and their stories having an end, instead of technically being left unfinished.

    I do like this movie, but it's definitely not great. I feel like the central story could have been portrayed in a much more compelling way. I do love the story on its own, and the comedic moments are great, as well as a few dramatic moments, but I think this movie could have had a bit more going on with the performances. I like the new characters for what they are, but they're a bit underwritten, and the movie does rely a bit too much on Johnny Depp, which kind of sucks since in hindsight, a lot was happening with him behind the scenes, so his performance definitely felt more off than usual. (tbf, Jack Sparrow is meant to be kind of "off," but it's a bit more noticeable here). Dead Men Tell No Tales is definitely the weakest Pirates movie, and it could have been great, but as it stands, the movie's just alright. I do think it's far from terrible though. Part of me kind of wishes for a fifth movie just because this one ended off on a pretty interesting note with Will being freed and Jones being back, and I wouldn't mind seeing where that could potentially go, but obviously, I'd hope for that sequel to be better.
