Mike: I order mine from across the pond, Massachusetts, and I got it in 36 hours. Toolpost is the best and friendlier store I have ever dealt with. Our club has order several of them. Extremely confortable, much better than the others available.
Thank you Mike. I'm fortunate insofar as I can turn most days. I've been using the powered respirator for about 18 months and I can't recommend it highly enough. At the end of each working day I can't believe the amount of dust which has collected on the filters and which would otherwise be in my lungs. About every second day I bring it indoors and use a domestic vacuum cleaner to remove excess dust, charge the battery and use Windolene to clean the visor. Initially, I had some difficulty fitting it over my specs but I have developed a technique to overcome this and is simplicity itself. When I go out to my workshop I now reach for the respirator in the same way as I put my seatbelt on in my car. If you want a safe and healthy woodworking life then don't scrimp on a powered respirator.
Hi Alan, I couldn't agree with you more mate. The Powercap has served me well for over 4 years now, and I, like you, wouldn't be without it. Take care Mike PS - Up in a couple of weeks.....Pink Ivory ;)....if I don't explode it...lol
The cooling effect is a great selling point. It's pretty warm here in Florida for about 9 months of the year. I use a pink 3M and it works well, but it's quite sweaty. Thanks for the review!
Great Mike - very informative - I bought one when in the UK over Christmas - best present ever. it works a treat no issues with power etc here in Canada.
Being as I’m 61 years of age and have had bouts with pneumonia in the past, I thought this could very well be a life saver. Recently have taken up power carving which generates a lot of dust. I saw another video where a chainsaw carver mentioned he uses one so I checked out the site and ordered one. Then I came across your excellent video on this product. Thank you for taking the time to create this very informative video sir.

Thanks for doing a in depth review of this one Mike, I've always seen you wearing it but nice to know more. Sadly it's way too expensive for me, would be a nice investment down the road though.
Great review. I have the Axminster version, and I endorse it fully. Before I got it, I was worried that it would cause my eyes to water (this happens when out in cold wind !! - very annoying). I am pleased to report that it does not cause this problem.
Hi Mike, I bought the Axmister one, which is a rebrand of the JSP kit. It's one of the best things I've ever bought, very comfortable and effective. I was amazed at how effective and well balanced it is. The filters get covered quite quickly if you're sanding, and as advised by the Axminster staff, you can extend the prefilters by hoovering them after use. I'm still working on an effective way of putting it on though, as every time I slip it over my face, my glasses end up dislodged in a Captain Mainwairing sort of way!!
+Steve Howie Hi Steve, glad you concur with my thoughts mate. One thing worth mentioning, don't Hoover the filters too often, as it pulls the fibres apart, and they can become less effective. Cheers Mike
I've got the Axminster branded version the best one on the market. Had a fault with mine in September and it went back to JSP came back with new fan and filters very good company very good mask.
Hi MikeThanks for your quick reply, I really appreciate it.I think your plan is a good one. As I am 70, all I need now is a couple of strong lads to do the lifting while I do the supervising!I'll let you know how I get on.Best wishesStan
Hi MikeAnother great video. I think I may go for this respirator. You may remember that I contacted you some time ago telling you that I was a new turner, and seeking your advice. I have joined a club, and it's great. I have also bought an Axminster Lathe like yours, and it has just been delivered. It's a monster! Can you tell me if the headstock, which is very heavy, can be removed to facilitate fastening the lathe bed to the legs?
Hi Stanley, and thank you. You will not be disappointed if you get the respirator, it is a really worthwhile and "comfortable" investment. Great news about the club and the lathe. I had a mate give me a hand when I first got mine, and slid the head stock to the middle of the bed ways, he held the lathe at approx 45° and I fixed one leg, then he lifted it on the leg that was attached, and I bolted the second on. Not the ideal way to do it, I agree, but he is strong (and younger), the head stock can be removed, but stays attached by the cables etc, and I didn't want to disconnect everything :) Not much help am I ;) Take care Mike PS - Let me know how it goes.
I have something similar called an Airmate visor. I don't think they are available anymore. It really works better than a conventional filter mask.it is so much easier to breathe with it on than the usual cartridge mask.
Thanks for the review. I think I need one, because I get trouble with my lungs. I do have a question about ear protection like ear mufs. Is it compatible with this respirator? Thanks
Very nice review Mike but I wish you mentioned the cost on one of these babies. I have looked at them as I can't wear a mouth respirator and might have to plunge into one some day. I do find them to be rather hefty on price. I guess the manufactures are more interested in profit than they are on peoples' health LOL just my 2 cents worth here.Take care
hi Al, the reason I don't mention price is that it can vary, especially with shipping to the USA, so if you visit the site you will find out the cost to you, which could well differ from someone in a different part of the world. Thanks for your comments mate, always a pleasure to hear from you. Take care Mike
Hi Mike, am new to woodturning, but want to get the best visor etc I can. I just wanted to ask you how long you think the battery will last before needing to be completely replaced!? Also would you recommend buying a spare, to prolong the original batteries life? At over a £105 a battery I'm wondering if I should save a bit longer to get an additional battery! Would love to get your opinion!
@@MikeWaldt thankyou so much for the quick reply, hadn't thought to get something quite as good or expensive! But it does sound like a worthwhile investment!! Once again, thankyou for all hints, tips and advice; I'm so looking forward to setting up my workshed and buying all my woodturning kit! Am thinking of going for a 'Record Power Regent Lathe'.
Hi Mike Thanks for a very informative video. I know it is nearly 7 years old but I have just recently come across it as I have been researching PAPR. I currently have the Trend Airshield and it is starting to fall apart and also is very heavy. I have seen a lot of comment about it not being up to spec for hardwood turning etc. I would just like to know if, after all this time, are you still happy with the JSP? Thanks for your great videos, Greetings from Australia
Hi, I have done a couple of sharpening videos here are the links: czcams.com/video/RQZm3kEOIW4/video.html czcams.com/video/zeWJl3DRxDw/video.html czcams.com/video/Xl_G1QUSXkM/video.html Hope this helps Cheers Mike
I like this product, but it MUST be noted it is only offering protection to TH1P level - the lowest category of protection for 'turbo hoods' (powered respirators). This is a complex area, but it is important to note TH1P only carries an APF (Assigned Protection Factor) of 10; to put that in context, HSE (the Health & Safety Executive) cite TH2P which has an APF=20 as the minimum respiratory protection for working with hardwoods. As a point of information (not a recommendation) the Trend Airshield Pro carries certification to TH2P, so offers a higher level of respiratory protection. The 3M Versaflo offers configurations in TH2P and also TH3P, but carries a significantly higher price-tag. I owned this mask and liked it in terms of comfort, but have since chosen to replace it with a product offering better respiratory protection as I could not wear something I had since learnt HSE view as inadequate for the activity I bought it for - machining of hardwoods (woodturning). Hardwood dust is toxic. The dust of woods like beech, elm, oak, birch and ash are cited as carcinogenic and linked with respiratory disease and nasal cancer. The manufacturer, JSP, clearly states the filters are "not suitable for toxic particles". It's for people to make their own mind up what's right for them, but do make sure you understand the spec, and are happy it's right for your application.
Not at all, Mike; as you are aware, marketing of this product has (inadvertently or not, who knows) left a lot of people believing is is a direct competitor to other respirators like Trend. It appears to do a lot of things better - comfy, lightweight, good battery - but it is something you buy to offer respiratory protection. And on that count, it carries a rating lower than even it's main competitor. People need to be aware of what the play-off is, and it is not being made clear in reviews...I believed I had researched it well before buying!! Cheers.
mysticbravo Thanks for your input. It is good to have all the facts. I would imagine most turners require a respirator that filters out the finer hardwood dust particles . What a pity this mask has the lowest filtration rating. As Mike says, Woodturners need to be aware to make an informed decision.
I've been saving for this for several months! I placed my order from the toolpost today. The order went through, but I noticed this no longer ships to the US! I'm so sad. Do you know another way I can get this? They sell a similar part on Amazon, but it's nearly $500 US. Great review nonetheless. I hope I get to try one someday!
Hi dean, I am sorry to hear that you cannot get a unit in the Staes. I'm afraid I have no solution for you. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Take care Mike
Mike I just bought one of these and am getting used to it. But now I am seeing so much crap bouncing around on the actual protection of these units. I see below a comment that it is rated TH1P, but if you go on the TSP web site it says rated EN 149 FFP2. Which seems more than adequate for woodworking needs. Any new thoughts? Sign me confused and just spent a lot of money!
Hi Neil, as with all my reviews, I try and just highlight the facts as given by the manufacturer, and my own thoughts of course, to help people make an informed decision. Like with most things, there are many variables that will contribute to the right choice, especially with PPE, what other systems you have in place, being a very important one. I will be doing a review of the Trend Airshield Pro, sometime in the future, but again this will only be to pass on what the company state in their manual, I would be wrong to recommend any type of PPE, as there are so many other factors that come into play, like dust extraction, air filtration, and hours spent producing dust etc. I'm not avoiding your question, just trying to explain that all I try to do is present the facts, and then leave the final decision making up to the individual. Take care mate Mike
According to the Toolpost web site (FAQs), they ship to the USA. When considering the JSP unit, it would be prudent to research the battery charging system since the UK uses a different power system (230 volt, single phase, 3 pin vs. 120 volt in the US). Step-up step-down voltage converters are available from Amazon. Contact the Toolpost for answers.
Have you had an impact experience while wearing this mask? How did it fare? I've heard that some masks will deflect enough to hit your face upon impact. No injuries reported but unnerving to say the least.
+Gil Grace Hi Til, thankfully no, but am confident it will withstand quit some impact to the relevant standards. Hopefully I won't have to put it to the test ;) Cheers Mike
hi mike. i got my powercap about 1.5 years ago from toolpost. it's the best there is. the only problem is the fan motor which it's shaft is quite loose and when you tilt your head it make unpleasent noise which go straight to your brain. the toolpost contact jsp and they sent me two more motor, but the problem is the poor quality of the motor. i even made a video and record the sound but instead of solving the problem they decide to stop responding to my mails. shame on toolpost and jsp...
I have not had any issues, and am sorry to hear that you are not happy, but I can only relay the experience I have had with mine over 4.5 years. Thanks for the comment Cheers Mike
Thsnks mike. I'm a usefull custmer... i like to help jsp to improve the product. I took the engine apart. There is a metal shaft sitting in loosy plastic housing and this cause all the unpleasent noise. Why not fix it ? Please forward my comment to jsp. All the best Shachar
hi there ...your question Why do pigeon fanciers wear the power cap? answer you can catch all sorts of nasty respiratory issues from pigeons ...It's a very good idea not to breathe the dust when you're cleaning out your bird cages and pigeon loft siticosis for one best regards billyo

Take care
Mike
Try Axminster, I think they ship overseas.
Take care mate
Mike
Thanks, so a follow up question, do you use this device in your daily work? Or what do you use for your normal daily use?
do you know of a comparable one available in the US?
Hi Scott, the ToolPost ship worldwide, so if you contact them they will let you know the total costs involved.
Cheers
Mike
I have the Trend headset. I blows air across my eyes and dries them out. Does this unit do the same?
Tom Boyer
Interesting, I have been considering the trend unit as it is comfortable to wear, a bit pricey though.
Hi Tom, in all honesty, I have not experienced that issue with the JSP.
Cheers
Mike
I need one of these so bad, I hate wearing masks for more than 1 minute lol
They will a very effective piece of kit.
unfortunately I don't see any info for the states
According to the Toolpost web site (FAQs), they ship to the USA.
When considering the JSP unit, it would be prudent to research the battery charging system since the UK uses a different power system (230 volt, single phase, 3 pin vs. 120 volt in the US). Step-up step-down voltage converters are available from Amazon. Contact the Toolpost for answers.
The ToolPost does ship to the states, as Joseph has said below, if you send them an email, I'm sure all your questions will be answered.
Cheers
Mike
Thanks
Have you had an impact experience while wearing this mask? How did it fare? I've heard that some masks will deflect enough to hit your face upon impact. No injuries reported but unnerving to say the least.
+Gil Grace
Hi Til, thankfully no, but am confident it will withstand quit some impact to the relevant standards. Hopefully I won't have to put it to the test ;)

hi mike. i got my powercap about 1.5 years ago from toolpost. it's the best there is. the only problem is the fan motor which it's shaft is quite loose and when you tilt your head it make unpleasent noise which go straight to your brain. the toolpost contact jsp and they sent me two more motor, but the problem is the poor quality of the motor. i even made a video and record the sound but instead of solving the problem they decide to stop responding to my mails. shame on toolpost and jsp...
I have not had any issues, and am sorry to hear that you are not happy, but I can only relay the experience I have had with mine over 4.5 years.
Thanks for the comment
Cheers
Mike
Thsnks mike.
I'm a usefull custmer... i like to help jsp to improve the product.
I took the engine apart. There is a metal shaft sitting in loosy plastic housing and this cause all the unpleasent noise.
Why not fix it ?
Please forward my comment to jsp.
All the best
Shachar
hi there ...your question Why do pigeon fanciers wear the power cap? answer you can catch all sorts of nasty respiratory issues from pigeons ...It's a very good idea not to breathe the dust when you're cleaning out your bird cages and pigeon loft siticosis for one best regards billyo
Hi William, and thank you for enlightening me, and others. Makes total sense too :)
Thanks for the input mate, much appreciated.
Take care
Mike
Whilst this video contains all the information needed it is like watching paint dry. It could have been done in a third of the time.
Ah well I'll wait for your next video to see how it should be done.
