Here's a heartwarming tale: the label behind this LP was Soccer Star Records, which was founded by Joshua Dibb, better known as Deakin, childhood friend of Panda Bear. This was their only release.
Deakin created his own record label just to help his best friend distribute his EP.
Just thought that was kinda nice.
When did the LP turn into an EP? :P
The Deak has always been good
I love Deakin. He also recorded and mixed STGSTV.
It’s an excellent album.
Holy fucking shit-
Ive listened to like 95% of animal collective’s extended discography. This one one of the last ones on my list and it could not have hit me in a better way.
It's nice to hear panda's voice stripped down like this
I remember discovering this in 2009. Awww so good to listen to this again.
I love how this is received on YT in the late 2010s/into 2020s. Very different reaction when it was resurfacing in mid to late-2000s, cuz everyone wanted the AC sound etc. No one wanted to admit most of us came from this sound.
Today we are going to discover all kinds of wonderful things about the many ways people make music...oh, It's going to be lots of fun...
I didnt even know this existed until 5 minutes ago, but happy 20th anniversary.
Same... WTF
Same wtf…
same 5 years later
I love that this album starts with a joyful, even child-like electronic sound, and then gradually passes into the most heart-rending territory... I've rarely heard a genre-defying record like this where the range of styles isn't there just for the sake of diversity but as part of the album's "story." In fact it's kind of what I've always lacked in records. Why must a record be uniform in terms of genre/style, as a product of one "authorial voice"? It's so much more interesting to feel the album passing through different states.
It's crazy how progressive this record is on that level, although I guess few people would see it as such...
Right! This album feels like something deeper reaching out through something simpler. Its definitely layered and beautiful
"Could you tell us a bit about the first self-titled Panda Bear album, and how that came together?
It’s more just a mix of songs, or a mixed tape, you could say. I didn’t really understand the concept of making an album where the sequence of the songs told a story. I would assume because, before that, my interaction with music was through the radio, and of course, you don’t hear full albums on the radio.
I remember my father had a couple of vinyl records in the house that he gave to me. I would just look at them, but I don’t think we had a record player, so I had no way of figuring out what was on these things. When I first went about trying to put out this first album, it was just picking and choosing songs that I had made over probably the course of about three or four years, just kind of going, “I like this one. Put that one first. I like this one too. Put that one second.” It was very much a shooting-from-the-hip exercise. It wasn’t until making a record with my friend Dave [Avey Tare] later on that I feel like the concept of really trying to craft a story via a sequence of songs started to crystallize for me."
from this interview daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2015/01/panda-bear-interview
maybe it feels childlike because its like unstructured play when panda didnt fully know what he was doing
@@saturatedneowax Interesting! So it's a mixtape of sorts. Still we the listeners construct a sort of narrative when we hear the songs one after the other. Panda Bear is a true artist.
ya i was always a fan of the last several tracks. maybe I can reassess and try the first half or 3/4 of album
Sometimes When It Hurts Bad Enough It Feels Like This
I love that song
What does the recorder rhythm/beat behind means?
@@juandediosiribarren6756 it's saying "SOS my grandma has me locked up in her basement"
@@luisete993 hehe ,r eminds me of the sounds submarines, and ships make,
@@juandediosiribarren6756 true, it kinda sounds like that
wow. out of his early works, this one is by far my favorite.
i like young prayer more personally but this is incredible too
This album doesn’t help me relax. It makes me relax. Very, very much appreciated.
That beat on “fire” is wild
this is startlingly different from panda's other work! never heard this album before
Yeah, it is quite different. Made when he was still a teenager in his bedroom. And released on Josh (Deakin,) record label soccer star records. I believe this is the only release on that label.
This album got me through some tough times in High School. Today I was randomly reminded of it and decided to revisit it. I still love it.
I love it. Noah is brilliant. Thanks for upload this.
wow i forgot about this... about to get that nostalgia blast
haven't heard this since high school. clutch post
Oh I had no idea. I named my son after Panda Bear, and I'd never heard this. This is magic.
damn your kid's name is panda bear, that's sick
This is off the chain, folks!
one of the greatest albums ever made.
Happy 20th
Thanks for posting this! such a nice album
Kid vibes
Thank you! Soooo gooood
Me encanta está banda , la amo! Cuantos recuerdos :')

Sean Schutt yeah, what he said :)
This is my favorite AnCo solo record
Thank you.
Le agradezco al destino, dios, la suerte o lo que sea que hizo que me presentaran animal collective y
Llegara a esto
Amazing
mich mit einer mond is unbelievably pretty
listening to it on the bus home is so peaceful
This shit is soooooo good
Ty Wick ikr, I hope to get a copy of this cd someday
Esta hermoso este album, amó la calidad tan amateaur y como va variando tanto de pista en pista, se siente directo y acogedor. Te amo pandaber
41:45 hauntingly beautiful track. But I wanna hear it without the talking and beeps. Just piano and those bomb like sounds would be amazing.
Dank
oh this is so cool though
First song needs a "do-do do do do" thing in the backround
Oh Please Bring her back! Sounds like Nico from the velvet underground
that's the track that made this a forever album for me
Is there anyway you could make this available as a download in a direct message somewhere? I would love to be able to listen to this in my car, without having to open up CZcams.
Liking this a lot! A pity Noah's all but ruled out reissuing this (it might just happen someday though, but I'm not holding my breath). Some good ideas here worth reshaping for a new Panda Bear or Animal Collective LP potentially...
Tbh Monkey Riches sounds like it borrows a lot like the first track here
Dolphin reminds me so much of Mich mit einer Mond
I can definitely see the resemblance
Yup
Mich mit einer Mond fucking gem!
that opening sounds like it has some big inspiration from aphex twin
nothing makes me cry like this. bring the axe down...
Honest show of hands, who owns this album on cd? I think very few were printed. I have one, ha.
Are you serious? If so that would be amazing. Proof?
@@ThaGuyWithPie I'll sell it to you for a million dollars, lolz
@@PaulBenjaminJenkins I ain't paying shit
@@ThaGuyWithPie Hard ball, eh? Okay, 500k.
might be cool to make a bootleg of it
🤸

I have to find more music that sounds like Fire! someone help me please.
"that first song fucking sucked, let's listen to it again..."
It truly is remarkable that the dude who made this ended up on a Daft Punk album just 14 years later...
Ohne Titel could be in minecraft
goddmansomegoodshitt
loft Radiohead vibes
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🤘👏👏👏👏
If Kurt Cobain and Aphex Twin collaborated
Lmao wut
fairly spot on, more like a love child probably
Th'fuck?
This reminds me of electronic grunge Beatles, if that would ever be a thing
Get better music taste
