- In this video I visit Zihuatanejo / Ixtapa, in the southwestern part of Mexico.
I was surprised by how calm, safe, and beautiful it was -- and how friendly and approachable the locals were.
As always, I wander around and get the local perspective, check out local businesses, ask about hidden gems and good food, and capture (or at least try) the essence of the people and the place
Thanks for watching the video and let me know what you think in the comments.

My husband is from that area and we have been to Zihua a few times. We are planning to go again in February. I absolutely love the people and culture. Such a charming and beautiful city. Can't wait for our return trip!
Useful video, I am traveling there this summer and now I have a feeling for the people there and the calm and friendliness of the city’s residents. You put showing the people first and I like that about your video!
Thank you, thats exactly what I'm going for, glad you liked it. Safe and fun travels!
Great video, Thanks. I thinking of taking my family here for my mom's 60th birthday.. so it was great to catch the local scene.
Hope you have a fun time, and thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. As gringos that live in Zihua it helps when more people counter the negative connotations surrounding Mexico as well as our state of Guerrero. These types of videos really help. Take care.
One day I will go back to visit my hometown Zihuatanejo.
Seafood! If you love seafood, then this is the place for you! Zihuatanejo is a small fishing town, and the fishermen are coming in every morning with their daily catch. I'm surprised nobody mentioned a local favorite dish called "teritas". It is similar to ceviche, but made with fresh fish. It is delicious and is popular in Zihua.
When In Zihua, go to the marina, and ask for a boat captain named "Bernie". We met him on our first trip there and have hired him for private boat trips every time we return. He's awesome!!
Everything everybody said in the video is true. The food is great, the people are friendly, we feel very safe there, it's easy to get around on foot, taxi, or the local shuttle busses. The beaches are nice and make it very easy for you to lounge all day.
There are some great snorkeling areas like Manzanillo Beach and Ixtapa Island that are accessible by boatride.
We consider Zihuatanejo to be a true hidden gem.
Best of all it is more of a local town, so the prices everywhere are very reasonable.
You did a great job capturing some of the charm of Zih! Your video was another reassurance to me that my decision to make Zih my new home in 2 years is the right one!
Thank you. That sounds amazing. Seems like a nice place to live! Best of luck.
Heading to Zihua for the first time from our hometown of Progreso Yucatan. This was a terrific introduction and we're really looking forward to the experience. Hope to see some of the faces in your video!
Glad you liked it and safe travels!
We have been going to Zihua every year for the past 10 years or so. People always ask if it is safe there and I tell them I feel safer there than when I go downtown in my home city of Minneapolis! You really captured the main reason we love it so much, which is how friendly the Mexican people are. They rely on tourism for sure, but they are just genuinely friendly and happy people. The Sunday Fiesta is always one of the highlights of our trip. Do not miss it if you visit!
Nice to see a fellow Minnesotan visiting my channel :) Yes the people were so friendly. Excited to go back someday.
My opinion the reason downtown is dangerous because of bums feeling entitled to free money instead of asking for a damn job.
We've been quite a few places in Mexico and after we went to Z in February of this past year we knew we found where we wanted to eventually live at least part-time and so we've purchased a condo! Absolutely checks all the boxes
Zihuatanejo and it's people are very special to me. Thank you!
I'm glad you liked it. The people I met were so kind. Hope to be back.
Love this and Ross’s in depth exploring style. 10/10

We recently canceled our trip to Ixtapa due to the recent US gov travel advisory. I'm regretting it now after watching this! 🤔😖
Sorry you had to cancel! I also was a little concerned before going as I saw the travel advisory, but walking around and talking to the locals, feeling the vibes, etc put me at ease. Hopefully you can get the chance to visit soon! Thanks for watching the video.
I try to go every year and I always feel safe when I'm there.
It’s never too late .YOLO
when did you visit?
