F-106 Delta Dart - The Ultimate Interceptor
***On December 15, 1959, then-U.S. Air Force Major Joe Rogers, at the stick and rudder of F-106A Serial Number 56-0467 set a measured world absolute speed record of Mach 2.39 (1,525.95 mph/2455.77kph). Though that speed record has been topped by multiple jet aircraft since then, the Delta Dart still holds the world record as the fastest single-engine fighter after 62+ years.
in February 1949, at White Sands, the X-15 reached a speed of 8,290 km/h (5,150 mph), or about Mach 6.7.
@@zsavage1820 The X-15 was powered by a rocket vs. a jet engine.
@@flashgordon6670 Saunders-Roe SR.53 ===> this is why they dont power interceptors with rocket motors. there's some good docs on that airframe on YT!
And the F-106 is still one of the best looking, IMO
a modified f16 in a nosedive might reach that speed
just crazy how slow the blackbird still makes everyone else look after 40 years
More like 58 years!
But it never was a interceptor. If the blackbird was actually made to carry missiles and a radar it wouldn't fly as fast nor would it be the same size.
@@antoniohagopian213 The SR-71 grew out of the YF-12 which was an interceptor.
It's what you get in exchange for the maneuverability of a slightly sharpened brick.
@@egberthigglewonk4520 crazy how the 2000's was more than 20 years ago
Real world we would refuel the SR-71 in the Isabella Refueling Track at 25,000 feet. The track is located in the South West corner of Edwards Range Complex near Lake Isabella. We would come off the tanker headed south and accelerate in a shallow descent to 16,000 feet if I remember correctly. This was called the "Dipsy" silly name but it was the best way to get through the transonic range in the shortest, ie less fuel burn, amount of time. Once at at around 340KEAS (knots equivalent airspeed) the turn to start a climb would commence that would place us over Edwards headed North in the 30's "Booming" Edwards passing Mach 1 as we flew overhead. We had an agreement with LA Center to exit the Edwards complex above 40,000 feet roughly around the Cal Nevada boarder. That would put us in the range of Mach 2... That is around 130 NM. from there it was a slow steady accel to reach Mach 3.0. Our sorties were planned at 3.0
I love the information you provide. Call me a nerd but the tech info is awesome.
The F-14A was so far ahead of the pack that it wasn’t even in the video. Either that or it was down for maintenance 😂
It's just too dam pretty...
Once the Vtec on the blackbird kicked in, it really wasn't much of a race at that point.
Yeah, but if Hector had put his T66 turbos(with NOS)on the MIG I think it would have taken it. 😂
Haha, had one
Max speed i’ve come across is Mach 3.49, this was thanks to unusually cold air on that run.
The speed of the SR-71 was most commonly limited by the CIT, compressor inlet temperature, which was 427 degrees C. The max travel of the spike was another limiting factor.
4275 km/h. 2656 mph. 2408 knots per hour.
Not to shabby!
Missing the F106, that was a purpose built rocketship, too bad it doesn't exist in DCS...I have a feeling it would have been a top 5. Hopefully a faithful to real-life F4 and F104 module is in the cards at some point.
Good to see there are a few people that like the -106.
They should have had the F 106 not the F 105. The F 106 was much faster up high than the 105; (though the 105 was faster at sea level). The 106 was mach 2.3 - 2.4 up high. The F 15C with 229 engines would have actually done better than the SU 35 in this scenario, and would have been ahead of the MIG 31 until near the end, and even then, only at the very high end would the MIG 31 barely pass the F 15. The Raptor is 2.48 mach, not 2.2. soft limited by its stealth coating, hard limited somewhere not far past 2.5 by its non variable intake geometry; like the F 16 is limited to 2.03 mach for its fixed intake. Although the Rsptors intake is deeper, so its not as limited by the shockwave as the F 16 is. The SR 71 was modeled "pretty close", for just using its turbojet and afterburners. It's actually faster than depicted here, but actually could NOT do this intercept as shown. It could NOT take off with the fuel load to perform this intercept. It would have to meet a KC 135 (with the older turbojet engines, not the more modern CF56 engines) to take on its special jp 7 fuel. Thats why tge YF 12 never made it as an interceptor. The KC 135 would have to scramble first. SR 71s did not accekerate that fast until past mach 1.6. An F 4 Phantom was quicker from subsonic speeds to mach 1.6 than the SR 71. The SR 71 was not that quick when subsonic compared to most other jet fighters. Although in reality, the SR 71 acceleration was greater going through mach 3.2 and above than it was going through mach 1, or even mach 2 if it used its ramjet bypass. hmmm...interesting huh....
It's interesting to see the size of these birds side by side. The Typhoon looks tiny!
Big emphasis in European fighter design to be able to operate from rough or auxiliary runways like Motorways. If the fighters too large it cant use the roads.
Mig 31 built like a speed boat.
It was a bomber, by role, but F-111 Ardvark was dang fast, as well.
Yup, I used to fly those. Had one up to 2.25M on a test flight once, it still had more to go.
Oh, that would be a sweet video series. Fastest bombers of each generation.
Just like the F-14A it wouldn’t accelerate fast enough to make the top 5
@@flashgordon6670 Typical pilot response lol
Why was a bomber designated as a fighter then?
Be interesting to see how the results change with each plane armed with a realistic interceptor load out.
I would absolutely love the English Electric Lightning to be included in these types of videos
You have just explained the issue with the EEL during the video Cap 🙄 Maybe one day there will be a mod of the Jet in game
fuel would be the killer for that thing
@@eatthisvr6 it’s actually surprisingly fuel efficient especially with the F.7 with external tanks
@@errorbyte7657 you mean the f6? iirc they were ferry tanks with pretty serious performance limitations with them fitted
@@flashgordon6670 that wasn't even armed lol
The English Electric Lightning (probably)
I also did not expect that Blackbird to have that kind of acceleration 🙃
The real-life record to reach 70,000 at Mach 3 was approximately 13 minutes.
Awesome fun! Want to see the English Lightning if you get a working model.
Simba a real one for flying just to fly 😂 & love the Eagle & Hornet 🔥
Cool stuff, thanks for putting this together!
Considering all the time to climb records the F-15 set, as well as being the only plane to shoot down a satellite I don't trust these results. Not saying the eagle should have won but something was definitely wrong with the acceleration.
Time to climb was made by a modified F-15 called the Streak Eagle so pretty unfair to compare to to F-15 in game. Pretty sure GR did some videos on it.
@BearCat Racing That's true, and the one that shot down a satellite was also a modified version. However, I think both examples speak to the power of the aircraft. I don't buy that the Eurofighter would beat it. I think maybe he waited too long to lose the drop tanks, messed up the climb, or maybe the in-game model is inaccurate. I could be totally wrong, too
@@bearcatracing007 Yes we did. czcams.com/video/Su6Wb4rIBi0/video.html
SR-71 is not an interceptor unless you count fox 4. Also for a real test would be weapon loadouts and must return to base and land.
You are right. SR-71 is not an interceptor. There was some testing using missile carry but the idea was scraped. After taking of SR-71 has to be refueled in the air and that would delay too much any hypothetical intercept mission.
The mod is actually called the YF-12, which was the interceptor design before it was scrapped and made the SR-71 instead.
@@flashgordon6670 The RAF intercepts Russian planes all the time they don't all fall out the sky through lack of fuel though you'd be out of planes in no time. They don't have to shoot at them normally just incepting them is enough but bringing your £100M bird home each time is pretty much expected. It also would be just as fun guessing how much fuel to take to intercept and get back and what Stores to take if you needed it.
@@flashgordon6670 Probably because your wrong there may be situations were accidents happen or escorts take the interceptor out but no air force it going to intercept then eject it would be a pretty short war if that happened.
hey man thanks for making these types of videos. They helped me get into dcs.
I’m too poor but it looks so cool
@@logayn671 it is, I highly recommend it!

Oh what a present for my birthday. Love these videos!!
Keep em cranking out! Will have to turn these into missions with period intercept raids with Sam and intruder and tank support! I'm thinking it would be a great new years celebration
Extremely informative.....Cheers Capt 👍
As the drag race this isn't bad. As an intercept you wonder if some of those airframes would be so clean.
While the take-off speed is critical in the scramble I wonder if you wouldn't get a better representation starting everyone in a line on the deck at some minimum speed.
@@flashgordon6670 I'll give you that although then it becomes even less of a test of the plane and more about the crew.
I find it a shame you've never included the British Electrics Lighting as it was an impressive interceptor of it's time being the first jet capable of super cruise and going mach 1 while almost vertical
Absoloutely !!
100% agree! The first aircraft in service anywhere with a T/W ratio of 1:1 as well (F.3 in ‘62, F-104 followed with upgraded engines in ‘67).
The only thing quicker than the blackbird is a bad curry the morning after. Mach 9.45 hitting the bowl
🤣
Damn! That view looking back at the group taxiing was totally badass!
Thanks for showing the playlist, I'm going to watch all of them now, bye.
The fastest interceptor time from start up to in the air in 5 minutes was the F-20 Tiger. The F-16 was about 11 minutes. And the F-20 had a faster top speed and longer range. There is one thing that no Simulator Like DCS take into account it the time it take for the Computers and weapons guidance systems to load and reach ready status. The F-20 had a rage of just over 2,000 at 600 knots with out refueling. the F-16 had to tank twice at the same speed. It was really 1 1/2 times.
it was a F-5 with a single GE F404 engine. It produced up to 60% more thrust. and needed less than 1,500 feet to take off. And it had a clime rate of over 53,000 Feet per minute.
It could carry just over it's own weight in weapons.
The only one I would put with this plain would be the F-106 Delta Dart. The only plane to land it self with out a pilot. And not be destroyed.
Been watching this series. Who knew that a bunch of pixel planes flying in a straight line could be so interesting.
I had a crappy takeoff in the 105 but think I still ended up where it should be in the end. RB
Damn it grim, lol, should have put a human in the Mig 25!
Wanted to see the blackbird, foxhound, foxbat, and Raptor fight it out lol - especially since the Foxbat can do Mach 3+ and it'd be interesting seeing it race a Foxhound
The Raptor's been talked about a 2.5 - 2.7 or 2.8, but it seems DCS doesn't model that....
A clean F -15 should do some damage- but i highly suspect it'd take the A model? No way other Eagles can keep up with the A model, even stripped to my understanding
/Give us the Mach 3 showdown!
For stealth reasons the F-22 has fixed inlet ducting and that's what's limiting the top speed rather than engine thrust which it has plenty of to go faster if the intake air could be diffused down enough to feed them. Much beyond M2 you need a variable intake duct so that's one of the compromises made to keep it stealthy...as well as the skin coatings don't like such high speeds either so that also helped with the decisions on how fast they could/should go.
@@flashgordon6670 Burning fuel makes heat, but it's the expansion of the rest of the air (78% nitrogen) that expands from that heat and makes the majority of the mass being ejected as thrust. Adding pure oxygen will make a LOT of heat and just melt the crap out of things where combating the heat already being generated is THE limiting factor as to how hard you can push the engines.
Adding both hydrogen and oxygen means you need to make a rocket rather than a turbine engine and it's going to be impossible to carry enough fuel to get the endurance you need to make an aircraft a viable machine.
There have been rocket planes...but they go very fast for a very brief period of time and beyond something like the Germans did trying to make an interceptor to get up to the bomber formations they're not going to be of much use.
@@flashgordon6670 Well....land speed record cars....jets and rocket types have 'just' been able to hit Mach 1 after several miles of acceleration. It wouldn't be much of a race with any modern military jet, though the Blue Bird's were run back in the mid 1930's where 300 mph was something special and probably could hold their own against any aircraft of the time. Especially down at ground level where the aircraft aren't optimized to fly it would likely be a good race! I don't know how someone would model such a race...but if it were done I'd for sure give it a watch as I really do like the old Malcolm Campbell vehicles.
It is well known that the Mig 25 can do mach 3 but it will tear the engines apart in just a matter of minutes. It was heavy and sucked down fuel with those humongous engines.
So they opted to keep it below 2.8 and preferably 2.5.
The foxbat is what you can do with raw power for a couple minutes...
The SR family is what you can do with brains mixed with raw power all day.
So the SR will still win this race hands down. Every time.
@@heathb4319 Bear in mind MiG-25 and MiG-31 are interceptors, they carry AAM and have decent rate of climb and can maneuver better than the Blackbird which is strictly reconnaissance airplane built for speed and long range.
That was really good!
Hell yeah! Thanks Cap!😁✌

This is GLORIOUS! Good fun. Thank you.
I'd never realised how fast the Eurofighter is, I assumed it was F-16 level of performance but it shifts! Being in the mix of big heavies like MiG 31, SU-35, F-22 and F15C is impressive.
Obviously setting the Blackbird up for max attack mode was cool. I did worry it was going to get done over by being last onto the pad with it's long take off but Matrix did a proper Thing.
I know it wouldn't win, but too bad you don't have an F-106. Definitely my favorite of the Century series. I think of the ones represented, it's a toss up between the Thud, and the Viggen.
I need a repeat, with Kortana's computer brain flying the missing Tomcat and plotting an optimal flight profile.
Goodnees, Cap, you & your Grim Reapers are very busy bees and your viewers are better for it. Love all you do and always look forward to your next greatest adventure...
Thank you, the F-16 is so op in game, it makes every other teen fighter look bad. They need to fix it, especially its one circle and slow speed capabilities.
Very entertaining video....super commentary.
the winner is the one who intercepts the target, destroys it and returns to the home airport, not the aircraft that run out of fuel on the way back and fall to the ground or into the sea, that is the mastery and skill of the pilot, not this
not sure if i understand this correctly, there may be a reason for this but cannonball was only at 95% on rpm when everybody else was at 109% might explain the slightly slow showing from the eagle
Likely managing fuel
The FC3 F-15 will only ever max output at 96%. It doesn't show rpm differences when in afterburner.
I wonder if it can not make full RPM at altitude? (guess)
Ehh, SR-71 was not really an interceptor and after losing 4 planes to tire issues from taking off with full fuel load, its SOP was to take off with minimal fuel to reach a tanker and then get its fuel for the mission. That would add a bit of time to its intercept. Not sure about the YF-12 though. It was quite a bit lighter than the SR-71
4 planes? What happened to the crews?
The mod is actually called the YF-12. They just made it look like the SR-71 version.
The plane we use is actually a SR-71/YF-12A hybrid plane. Hence why we use it for combat.
This was very fun indeed
Okay but just imagine for a second being the ATC guy who stepped away for a coffee break and walked back in at 6:28
We all know the blackbird will win no matter what, given a big enough distance, but what would be good to see would be these planes race again but with an intercept loadout or a heavy as possible loadout, whether that will make a difference to the standings or not
@ralphmiller8871
the blackbird would have won if you had allowed it to take off sooner
1959 Avro Arrow with the Orenda engines would be amazing to see.
The mach 3 variant would be pretty awesome too.
How about race between the TU-160 vs B1B(R)? I'm pretty sure it was mentioned these are not flyable in DCS, but there is always hope?!
Along these same lines, the USAF B58 and XB70 could "pick em up and put em down" matching most of these fighters for speed.
The Valkyrie would be interesting to see in here, it weighed about 3.5 times more than the blackbird but it also had about that much more thrust as well.
@@flashgordon6670 that's the thing, the thrust to weight ratio of both is about the same.
Why use a Mig-19 instead of a Mig-21?
Oh I've got something even better planned for Tu-160
Mig-19 won it's heat. Mig-21 did not.
Have you guys thought about a “Wacky races” kinda of race - give everyone whatever aeroplane and one missile and see who wins?
Super cool race 🏁 😎
13:19 You can actually see the Blackbird pass the F22 down at the very bottom right by the clouds :)
id be interested to see race of who can do the intercept at make it back to base, landing safely. Introduces a bit more skill with fuel management and who can do an overspeed landing
I Read that Blackbird reached 3,5 or 3,6 on multiple occassions, though never in a official record run
Yeah, it's "official" top speed was Mach 3.3 but I've heard Pilots say they could "push the throttle" and get it to carzy numbers. They said it flew best at higher the Mach numbers.
@@dextermorgan1 Yeah a defending SR71 would just, .... throttle up and climb
1. No one blew up on take-off.
2. No air-to-air collisions.
3. No frozen-stiff, canopiless pilot named Cap.
This can't possibly be the beloved GR! 😆
Now it would be interesting to see this done again but each fighter MUST have enough fuel left to make it home after intercept, as we all know sexy planes can be quite expensive…
And add to that munitions to actually make the intercept and things get interesting!
Simba didn't get lost, so that's a win as far as I'm concerned.
Excellent
Does DCS have the Canadian Avro Aero? I have seen other simulators with it... would be interesting to see in DCS
Finally getting my trackIR in a couple of days and ready to dive back into DCS. Would you recommend just installing the standalone and transfer my steam licenses over there or just play it via steam. Im thinking of going into multiplayer at some point but insecure on wich version to choose
Ok but what about the f-106 or f-111 or b1-r middle truck? Or the English lighting?
I’d also love to see this include using weapons for the takedown and not just a drag race
Ok but are they all in game?
Interceptions, at different distances, plus some vector changes. Like the first contact was a decoy. Then the SR-71 would not be so dominant.
Having only watched DCS I'm amazed by the winglet vorticies and the off-throttle soot and vapour trails.... crazy they have only one, non-procedural sonic boom sound. Simba's boom was the exact same as the bbird... Doesn't seem right..
The F-105 upholding the proud Republic tradition of using THE ENTIRE RUNWAY to take off.😂😂
you should do this again (1910-2000) with bombers
It would be interesting to see if a plane, once at top speed, could shoot down another plane at a higher top speed. At what range can your missle have enough vellocity to shoot down the other guy.
@@flashgordon6670 friction... Air resistance at Mach 2 or Mach 4 must be veeery different
With that said - the missile can also make up for a just slightly top speed advantage over the plane, provided that it can fly for long enough
Just wondering how you could have possibly overlooked the canceled before production of the Canadian Avro Arrow? it would have still been an incredibly capable aircraft even in todays' combat environment.
interesting thing is if you did this again but with weapons for the intercept the f-22 would probably come out handley on top just because it's the only aircraft here with an internal weapons bay
I suppose next up is bomber races, whats the fastest plane that can carry a gravity bomb of 2000lb or more?
Winner is first to land a hit on their designated target (one target for each plane so you can compare the order). Glide or powered bombs excluded.
Or another idea, a relay race. They have to bomb 4 targets in four different locations then reach a finish line.
its actually not the engines that limit the f22 in top speed. If the f22 goes over mach 2.25, the stealth coating will literally evaporate from the heat of the speed so the f22 is electronically limited to mach 2.25. Without the limiter, its faster than the f15 at mach 2.7
And the narrow waist of the fuselage unglues itself from excessive heat. But then the SU and MiG engines would have blown to pieces on sustained reheat as well!
This would be way more fun with MarioKart rules.
aww f-104 isnt here… would have liked to see ASA varient well thats if it is in game
You should do another like this hit top speed at flight altitute set a limit they have to reach then make them fly back to the run way and successfully land plane. Whoever lands and parks first wins. I think that would be cool.
Cap - can we also try an in-air intercept where all these aircraft are in a line at XX,XXXft and then the race is on?
Gotta be the YF21 if it gets a 300 mile run up 😀
Re do the what could intercept the sr-71 with the new aim 260 the axehead and the pl15 you guys made
Due to the fact that SR71 isn't an interceptor, I was right. Had the YF12 been commissioned, then maybe. This was a general drag race. I would have picked the X-15.
Do keep in mind, the SR-71 was never officially put to 100% throttle. Granted, there was some part that couldn't exceed 900 C for any meaningful time.
Valued question: why use the f22 and not the su57 too, is it because it is still new, you supposedly are tuning the mods to make them more reasonable
Mig 29 too?
We tried with the Su-57 BUT currently the version in DCS can go over mach 3 which is just stupid. Eventually we'll make our own flight model for it to match public data.
Given that you included Blackbird, I wonder how the XB-70 and Concorde would compare (if they're in DCS of course)
The F-15 really doesn't need 3 bags to do this. Launch with just the centerline and it'll be up with the EF and Su-35.
And if I am being really pedantic, it should really be an A12 rather than an SR71 :-)
Fun video! Now get all these pilots to dogfight free-for-all in these interceptors haha
"Dasvidaniya Violet!"
"Helloooo!"
Cute
Grumpnik is back! Hahaha
Grumpnik is always here! Just normally passed out in the back room of a Burger King in Bulgaria...Don't tell Olga.
I'm surprised the F22 did so well. I assumed it's stealth abilities would impact too much. I was disappointed that there was no human in the Mig 25; for me, it is the quintessential interceptor.
my dad was a f106 pilot and it is hands down the fastest in its era and still holds that title as interceptor for single engine jets.
The SR-71 is a reconaissance aircraft. Sad there is no F-4 Phantom, F104 Starfighter, or English Electric Lightning, all of those would be serious contenders in this!
Thank you for your voice Cap
Thanks
Cap, maybe you should try a custom install of windshield wiper on your bird, seems to gain some speed in the helicopters. Why not give it a try in a fixed wing?
Cmon we want racetrack racing, 1 vs 1 knock out. The track must include max alt, bends, a fast straight and the need to slow quickly. So top speed, handling, braking and acceleration are all important.
People complained the F-16 was underperforming compared to the F-18, and what does ED do? Well, instead of revamping the apparently overperforming Hornet, they bump up the Viper..... ED does what ED does best i guess.....
