Probably the best episode in the series. Awe-inspiring. The villain of the show was definitely the CEO of English Heritage Dept. You would think a government would be more supportive of people trying to preserve a country's culture.
Exactly!! It's absolutely appalling how bloody minded those agencies can be. (And it makes no sense!)
They are pirates! once people bought as well some small castle, and hop came the club and wanted to dig a hole in the ground to search for some antique artefacts...they found nothing but the buyers had to pays them an enormous amount for it!
The question that needed to be asked of the CEO of English Heritage was since the building they claimed to be safeguarding would disintegrate in a few years if left in its basic state, surely they should have supported its restoration and perhaps even subsidised the archaeological survey etc, rather than delay the process.

I know it was expensive, time-consuming, and at times nerve-racking, but what a spectacular house. I commend the Shaw family and all of the tradesmen who turned this shell into a truly beautiful home. Wishing them all the best and hoping they are still enjoying it. Would love to go back and see how it is going. Thank you for sharing.
One of the best, most inspiring episodes of the entire show, ever. That the building was saved from such advance decay is a testimony to the masons and the owners. Sadly, there should have been financial grants or assistance from English Heritage, especially considering the value of the improvements made, the financial stress to the owners, and the restrictions required.

These people were absolutely crazy ... in the best possible way. I bow to them, to their perseverance and sheer 'BLINDERS ON' and "MOVING FORWARD" character. "Bravo!!" Extraordinary!
Rates along with the Grillagh Water House as the best 2 GD's ever! The stone masonry alone was incredible & congrats to this amazing couple for pulling this off (and not dropping an English Heritage inspector down a well)!
The fortitude, integrity and sheer quiet will it took, not to mention the stress of the risks taken to make this dream a reality, boggles the mind. One of the most impressive journeys I've yet seen. This couple are extraordinary. My hat's off to them and, in awe, I send them my best wishes for a blessed and peaceful life.

I believe the balance between preservation, restoration and modern usability was meet in this project. Respect to the owners, the tradesmen and Historical groups/ planning commission for a job well done!
Buying a heritage building is like going to the hospital in the States; no one will tell you any of the conditions/costs BEFOREHAND.
One of the most astonishing restorations because of the historical authencity of preservation,, simplicity and grade effort of complition. Admirations!
I‘ve now watched this episode at least three times and I‘ll be watching it again. Love the building and love the people, calm and resilient and entertaining as they are. Great stuff.
This building brings tears - just at the beauty of the restoration. Perhaps I love historical buildings but there is something exquisite to this.
This was a project I would've GLADLY donated funds to! Including the LEGAL FIGHT!!!!
What a beautiful building. Who wouldn't want to live in a castle or a castle with modern amenities? From start to finish I would have thought it would have cost millions of dollars to bring it back to life. Congratulations

All those agencies, designed to 'protect' ancient buildings, need to re-think & re-organize... and find ways of FUNDING those impossible projects, AT LEAST IN PART, before they are gone forever. It's no good having all those rules & regulations if people then DON'T restore, because it is too bloody difficult/frustrating/painful. Seriously! WHO is in charge of the Nation?
God, how frustrating dealing with guardians who really are bureaucrats like Simon Thurley! ..
Francis, I would not have the fortitude to deal with this red tape. Great Kevin ..you might have helped push the bureaucrats a bit, surely the heritage should pay back the 20K for restoration work.
Why do most heritage world-wide not encourage and assist.. they would rather watch a building fall than assist...well done to all involved....I have designed a similar rock-store for Geo-thermal heating and cooling.
BTW the house he sold is a real dump.

The whole listing process is ridiculous and often leads to old buildings of no architectural or historic value being listed. What then happens in many cases is that nobody wants anything to do with them, because restoring a listed building is a headache and the planners are often obtuse jobsworths who revel in making the investors life a nightmare. So those same buildings end up becoming ruins when they could have been saved. I think English heritage were only as cooperative as they were because grand designs were involved, otherwise they'd have been obstructive, probably in the hopes of obtaining backhanders.

In a way, the wall falling down would be a good thing in that it would provide a supply of stone for the repair of all the others, that matches very closely.

Excellent one of the very best shows ever! Too much bureaucracy interference - - overview and guidance is fine, but there should be a limit to how far they carry the rules
You can see why nobody attempts to save any of these historical buildings. The bureaucrats obviously don’t want the buildings to be saved with all the hoops they make you jump through.

If English Heritage is so concerned about the rebuilding, why did it allow the property to become such a total ruin?

It does seem strange that English Heritage does not have such archeological records from previous periods of occupancy it is not like they would have changed over time.
What stress. But still sounds like an absolute bargain comparatively. I'd be interested to know how much it would cost to buy and rebuild this today with the drastically increased building costs.
