When a soldier deploys on operations, they usually write THAT letter to their loved ones that they hope will never have to be opened. My brother kept my letter more than once and dreaded the responsibility. Sadly, a lot of these letters have been delivered.
Difficult to reconcile James Blunt the singer with James Blunt the British Army Captain who possibly prevented WW3 from breaking out but trust me, those of us who were in Kosovo that day are grateful and always will be.
This song works because he lived that truth with the rest of us and he was directly responsible for the very lives of over 100 people and on the day above, untold lives,.
Yes, he got commended by General Sir Mike Jackson for refusing the order to atrack the Russians holding Priztina Airport , saved a lot of lives that day

Had a friend working for a contractor in Iraq. She, and many others, were engaged in trying to train Iraqis to be good, effective police officers. She was killed by a roadside bomb. One of her coworkers came back with her. Turned out she had asked him to "take me home" if she was killed. I still miss her, and that was 17 years ago.
When I finally figured out what "carry you home" meant in this song, it hit really hard.

James served in the British Army for eight years. Including as an officer NATO, Kosovo. Video was shot in Dorset, White Cliffs of Dover and Bovington Army camp, where James had previously served.
No St Aldhems head in Dorset, not Dover.. There's a bit of Swanage in there as well..
He is a brilliant songwriter. He gets so much emotion and meaning into his lyrics.
James Blunt is mostly music for when you are really going through the ringer and need a good cleansing cry. He's INCREDIBLE, but listening many of his songs feels like someone is tearing your heart out...

As a Brit and ex serviceman of 12 years I can say with 3 million percent James blunt never served in Afghanistan. I served 2 tours in Afagan and 2 in Iraq and it's slightly insulting to say the least that you would spread misinformation. Not just an insult to me and everyone I served with but to james himself

I think this is based on true events I know James blunt served as a soldier in the British military, and this song is so deep yet gives people that have not experienced these dark times of life an idea of how crushing and painful war is.

Another weepy from James. But he's known so much sadness in his life. He does have more cheerful ones, however. :) As captain one of his responsbilities would be to return the dog tags and the final letter to their relatives. I love how the video ends with the white cliffs of Dover, as that is the first thing seen as you approach Britain from Europe or or most of the war zones. Very clever. No Bravery is another weepy, as is The Girl Who Never Was.

Awesome video I can relate to this video in so many Way's i lost my fiance in the Afghanistan war and my husband when he abused me and after our divorce , and finding out years later that our father raped me when i was 4 years old and my sister has been by my side
I’m so sorry for all the heartache and pain. Sometimes it feels like the hits never stop coming. Those that weren’t abused as a child will question how did you forget? The brain is so powerful when it comes to survival. I wasn’t sexually abused but the physical abuse, something shakes that covered memory loose and another round of processing pain that never goes away starts again. ❤️🩹🙏💚
