I had to watch a few videos and didn't feel they did a good job of explaining the valves most talk about the outlet box and valves but they didn't go into further details like you did in this video. i wish you and your channel the utmost SUCCESS! this video is phenomenal!! it truly is quite outstanding! 🙌❤️🙌 i own a ton of home improvement step-by-step books and have watched hundreds of videos... but NONE of them, nor my books simply, succinctly and thoroughly explained things the way you have. from the tapered vs straight pipe thread to the various valves and HOW TO measure them with string and a ruler simply blew my mind! i’m attempting to install a washing machine box just like you have in this video and a plumber quoted me over $1000 to do this. once i got over my shock and disgust at a man clearly taking advantage of a woman... i let my anger motivate me to not only install this on my own, but use significantly less money to do it and invest in some quality tools i’ve always wanted. thus great things can come out of crappie experiences. tonight i was in tears. a hour before i saw your video (and the day before thanksgiving) my vet called with bad news about my best four legged friend. he has a week to live. i watched your video with my precious fur baby next to me. seeing your cat make an appearance made me smile. tomorrow on thanksgiving i will attempt this project with more confidence and even more knowledge than i had before. thank you so much for this video!! if it existed when i attempted my first plumbing project i would have understood all the terms the way i do tonight. sending you all my gratitude!

Great explanation for a first timer. Take it from an old DIYer and engineer, there is no need to put teflon tape on straight threads for the washing machine hoses. It is the gasket inside the female hose connector that provides the seal. Also, it would be helpful to explain your acronyms, such as NPT - National Pipe Thread (tapered) or MHT = Male Hose Thread (similar to a garden hose).
And thanks for talking to explain. Ive seen videos wherevthey dont talk thru what they're doing and it's impossible for me to understand what is going on

Easily the best video I've seen on replacing these valves. Thank you. One question: You shut off the water to the house, which cuts off the cold water. But doesn't that still leave you with a tankful of hot water? How do you avoid draining the hot water tank, which probably isn't safe without shutting off the gas for the water heater too?
Hi Martin, thanks! To deal with that I opened both the hot and cold water valves on the faucets around my home after I had already shutoff the water main and waited until no more water dripped out. This drained both the cold and hot water lines in the walls, and also relieved the pressure from the tankful of water. After that, I was able to remove both valves without any water coming out of the pipes. In my case, my washing machine is on the same floor as my hot water heater, so some water did drain out of the tank but not much. Disclaimer though, I’m obviously not a pro plumber haha, my water heater is electric, and there are so many different types of water heaters out there that I really can’t say much about turning off the gas, etc. If you still have the manual for yours, it should provide some better guidance. Hope this helps!
Hi, the manual for mine advises turning off the water heater before draining the tank in order to avoid damaging components or creating unsafe conditions. You should definitely check the manual for yours to get the best guidance for your model from the manufacturer, and for the best instructions on how to turn yours off, secure the gas line properly, etc.
From what I understand, if cold water is cut off and no water is entering the water heater, vacuum gets created that prevent hot water from coming out. Thus turn on hot water around the house and sufficient amount of hot water drains and no more hot water will come out of the water heater. No need to drain the water heater or turn it off. You can experiment for yourself. Shut off water to the house and turn on hot water in kitchen sink. Amount of water that comes out is no where near the amount that is in the water heater.

The darn thing won’t let me turn the faucet on or off.and the other side faucet leaks into the sink. Boy do I need good luck, lol 😂

One thing I didn't mention in the video that might also be helpful is that when replacing old hoses, it's a good idea to consider using quality steel braided ones as opposed to the standard rubber ones (if you're not already) - could help prevent a major mess down the road - good luck with your project!
I'm an elderly Lady with this same problem, so this is exactly what I was looking for, I have to replace the Hot Water Valve this Week... This is a Fantastic informative And very helpful Video... 👍👍🤗 The background music really isn't necessarily helpful, or needed, it's rather distracting...
This setup is makes it pretty easy to replace the valves. Unfortunately 90% of the boxes out there have the valves attached to the box and soldered on below in the wall. This opens up a whole can of worms with soldering in a flammable wall and cutting into drywall. I would recommend some shark bite valves and fittings for that setup but you should have some prior plumbing experience before attempting it.

Thanks for the video - worked like a charm. Probably avoided $200-300 that would've went to a plumber. Total cost for me ($21 for two valves from Home Depot, $0.59 Teflon tape); 1.5 hr total including going to pick up supplies. Looking forward to more of your videos when I have home repair!
thought i needed a plumber then realized i believe my water valves are screw on not soldered so next problem is getting them off...mine are separate hot and cold not in a box..pipes are exposed...have that handle like you are showing but the intake side needs a female end i believe and the washer hose end is male to connect hose...id like the ball valve if thats possible....does it matter if thats not what i have already? started leaking at the handle then at the stem so its time for just taking the whole thing off...i think i can do it myself...if i can get it off lol...

Hi, that's awesome! Thanks for leaving a comment. It's tough to understand what could be causing the dripping via CZcams comments haha so I can't really give advice there. Wish I could help more. In case this is helpful - in my case, the new valves are harder to open and close since the seals are tighter. We've also had buildup / chunks of minerals like calcium in the lines at our hose that can make it hard to shutoff a valve if they get stuck inside of it. I'm also not a pro plumber though, so may be worth a call to one if the issue is bad enough. Hope this at least helps a little - good luck!

Hi! Currently trying to replace my leaky washer valves. I can't read the stamp on the valve because it's so corroded. I measured the circumference of the pipe with a tape measure and it is 1 inch. Is that the nps size in your table? Not sure which size I'll need bc most videos says I'll need a half inch. Thanks!
Just a quick note. the valve on the left is hot. I would have taken the red handle and installed it on the left valve. that way the ext owner know which is hot and cold.
Hi Frank, thanks for watching! Swapping the handles was actually my plan. Turns out, not all valve handle holes and valve stems are the same size. So the old red handle didn't fit on the new valve's stem. Next time, I'll definitely buy a pair of valves that are available with both blue and red handles.
I know this is two years late, but there are right-angle ball valves out there. Might be hard to find them, but they do exist. I'm glad we don't have a valxe box and the valves attach to the pipes horizontally, though
I have a question. My valves are working ok but the on/off handles are broken. Do I have to disconnect my washer to replace the handle? I have the connection on very secure and I don’t want to disconnect unless necessary.

14:57 As an amateur weekend warrior I am thinking that there is no water in the washer pipes right now, so if it does have a leak we won't know it until the hoses are reconnected and there is water running through them. Am I thinking right?
I'm glad it was helpful! I did think about it, but I wasn't sure if it would affect the quality of the seal since I'd be cutting off part of the tapered portion of the threads. Didn't want to risk it so I just left them as is.

My set up looks just like yours. The hot water washer hose will not come off. Tried to loosen and tighten the hose to hopefully get some movement but it wouldn’t budge. In doing so, the whole valve assembly moved about an inch to the left and right a few times. It occurred to me that I was bending the copper tube below and behind the drywall. Should I be worried? Fill time for the washing machine didn’t change. Should I be worried? Is the copper pipe much stronger than I give it credit for?
Yep, two blue handles instead of one red for hot and one blue for cold - I removed two with red handles so thought I'd just swing it the other way for a little a while (I'm kidding). Like I mentioned in the video, we'll be redoing some things in that room eventually and properly color coding the handles will definitely be on that list!
I was actually hoping this would work, but when I got the new valves (different brand than the old ones) and tried to swap the handles it turned out that the square holes that fit the handles to the stem were different sizes - the old valve's were larger and made it loose and wobbly. So, I decided to leave the blue one on there for the better fit and to help avoid accidentally damaging/rounding off the new valve's stem when opening or closing the valves.
1. Useful to me... my shutoff valves appear to be the threaded type too. 2. The discussion of measuring the pipe size didn't entirely satisfy, because mine appear to be about 15/16" outer diameter, which corresponds to neither 1/2 nor 3/4 NPS. The discussion also neglects pipe thickness (inner diameter). Hopefully there's a single standard size. 1/2? 3. Another way to drain the supply pipes is through the washing machine hoses into the drain standpipe. In other words, leave the hoses attached to the shutoff valve outlets, unscrew the hoses from the washing machine inlets and push the hoses' ends down into the drain pipe. This is how I may need to drain my supply pipes, because in my condo unit no faucets share the same supply pipes as the washing machine. 4. To guard against leaks when testing by turning the house water supply back on, you might want to reconnect the washing machine hoses to the valve outlets and stick the ends of the hoses down the drain pipe. Or to guard even more, wrap the valve connections in plastic bags so they will block spray and positioned so leaked water would be funneled down the drain pipe. 5. Before reconnecting the hoses, verify the rubber washers in the ends of the two hoses aren't missing. I read that plumbers tape on the threads isn't needed if the hoses have rubber washers.
Thanks for leaving such a detailed comment! On the pipe sizing question - there are standards (Wiki page link below in case it's helpful). Hopefully that can help match yours to the right size. One other viewer also made a good suggestion in that if your situation allows, you can remove and take the valve that you're replacing with you to the hardware store as a comparison when buying the new one.

Overall, you did a good video. But I'd suggest you turn off all background noises except your own voice. It's very annoying. Also some of the pictures/diagrams only stayed up a split second. Give the audience time to review for a few seconds or at least enough time to pause the video. You pushed the washing machine back into it's space without having to raise it up to get it into a drain pan. Do you not have a drain pan? Congrats on being a 1st-time homeowner. I'm sure you'll continue to learn & teach a lot thru the years...
Thanks, I appreciate the thoughtful feedback! I do not have a drain pan under the washing machine. It's on the first floor with a tile floor and slab below, so we don't have to worry about damaging lower floors/ceilings. But I also didn't really think much about it tbh, and it's a good point.
you are just lucky to have the stop valve screwed into the pipe, mine used soldering to the pipe, the box is plastic, there is no way to use a flame at all, can't understand why those idiots install the valve using soldering with a plastic box.

Hi Keith! It's hard to perform a moisture or plumbing pressure test via CZcams comments haha, so I can't really give advice here. But I will say that if you're at all concerned about having caused damage, or that you may have a water leak on your hands, I'd give a plumber a call. It'll be much cheaper than dealing with water damage! There are a lot of ways that they can quickly determine if you have an issue without having to remove drywall, etc. Copper is generally a pretty malleable material, but you never know what's going on inside the wall or at the fitting joints.

That's correct. In my case, the valves I bought didn't come with a red handle. For whatever reason, they were only sold with blue. I planned to swap the red handle from the old valve onto the new. But, surprise, the holes in the handles that fit over the valve stem were different sizes. So, beware if you plan to do the same.

It sounded like you were giving good info, but your music was so loud and obnoxious I couldn't think about the options you were giving us on the valves. Do you really feel a need to entertain people with the music. I need to hear and focus on what you are saying. This setup is makes it pretty easy to replace the valves. Unfortunately 90% of the boxes out there have the valves attached to the box and soldered on below in the wall. This opens up a whole can of worms with soldering in a flammable wall and cutting into drywall. I would recommend some shark bite valves and fittings for that setup but you should have some prior plumbing experience before attempting it.

Thanks for the video - worked like a charm. Probably avoided $200-300 that would've went to a plumber. Total cost for me ($21 for two valves from Home Depot, $0.59 Teflon tape); 1.5 hr total including going to pick up supplies. Looking forward to more of your videos when I have home repair!

I needed to see this but for the valves of the drying machine
thought i needed a plumber then realized i believe my water valves are screw on not soldered so next problem is getting them off...mine are separate hot and cold not in a box..pipes are exposed...have that handle like you are showing but the intake side needs a female end i believe and the washer hose end is male to connect hose...id like the ball valve if thats possible....does it matter if thats not what i have already? started leaking at the handle then at the stem so its time for just taking the whole thing off...i think i can do it myself...if i can get it off lol...

Hi, that's awesome! Thanks for leaving a comment. It's tough to understand what could be causing the dripping via CZcams comments haha so I can't really give advice there. Wish I could help more. In case this is helpful - in my case, the new valves are harder to open and close since the seals are tighter. We've also had buildup / chunks of minerals like calcium in the lines at our hose that can make it hard to shutoff a valve if they get stuck inside of it. I'm also not a pro plumber though, so may be worth a call to one if the issue is bad enough. Hope this at least helps a little - good luck!

Hi! Currently trying to replace my leaky washer valves. I can't read the stamp on the valve because it's so corroded. I measured the circumference of the pipe with a tape measure and it is 1 inch. Is that the nps size in your table? Not sure which size I'll need bc most videos says I'll need a half inch. Thanks!
Just a quick note. the valve on the left is hot. I would have taken the red handle and installed it on the left valve. that way the ext owner know which is hot and cold.
Hi Frank, thanks for watching! Swapping the handles was actually my plan. Turns out, not all valve handle holes and valve stems are the same size. So the old red handle didn't fit on the new valve's stem. Next time, I'll definitely buy a pair of valves that are available with both blue and red handles.
I know this is two years late, but there are right-angle ball valves out there. Might be hard to find them, but they do exist. I'm glad we don't have a valxe box and the valves attach to the pipes horizontally, though

I have a question. My valves are working ok but the on/off handles are broken. Do I have to disconnect my washer to replace the handle? I have the connection on very secure and I don’t want to disconnect unless necessary.

14:57 As an amateur weekend warrior I am thinking that there is no water in the washer pipes right now, so if it does have a leak we won't know it until the hoses are reconnected and there is water running through them.

I'm glad it was helpful! I did think about it, but I wasn't sure if it would affect the quality of the seal since I'd be cutting off part of the tapered portion of the threads. Didn't want to risk it so I just left them as is.

In doing so, the whole valve assembly moved about an inch to the left and right a few times. It occurred to me that I was bending the copper tube below and behind the drywall. Should I be worried? Fill time for the washing machine didn’t change. Should I be worried? Is the copper pipe much stronger than I give it credit for?
Nice although I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it but you put on two cold water coded valves, not that it matters but I'm o.c.d. with my work.
Yep, two blue handles instead of one red for hot and one blue for cold - I removed two with red handles so thought I'd just swing it the other way for a little a while (I'm kidding). Like I mentioned in the video, we'll be redoing some things in that room eventually and properly color coding the handles will definitely be on that list!
I wondered why you didn't just take one of the red handles from the old tap and put it on the new valve so the hot water tap would be obvious?
I was actually hoping this would work, but when I got the new valves (different brand than the old ones) and tried to swap the handles it turned out that the square holes that fit the handles to the stem were different sizes - the old valve's were larger and made it loose and wobbly. So, I decided to leave the blue one on there for the better fit and to help avoid accidentally damaging/rounding off the new valve's stem when opening or closing the valves.
1. Useful to me... my shutoff valves appear to be the threaded type too.
2. The discussion of measuring the pipe size didn't entirely satisfy, because mine appear to be about 15/16" outer diameter, which corresponds to neither 1/2 nor 3/4 NPS. The discussion also neglects pipe thickness (inner diameter). Hopefully there's a single standard size. 1/2?
3. Another way to drain the supply pipes is through the washing machine hoses into the drain standpipe. In other words, leave the hoses attached to the shutoff valve outlets, unscrew the hoses from the washing machine inlets and push the hoses' ends down into the drain pipe. This is how I may need to drain my supply pipes, because in my condo unit no faucets share the same supply pipes as the washing machine.
4. To guard against leaks when testing by turning the house water supply back on, you might want to reconnect the washing machine hoses to the valve outlets and stick the ends of the hoses down the drain pipe. Or to guard even more, wrap the valve connections in plastic bags so they will block spray and positioned so leaked water would be funneled down the drain pipe.
5. Before reconnecting the hoses, verify the rubber washers in the ends of the two hoses aren't missing. I read that plumbers tape on the threads isn't needed if the hoses have rubber washers.
Thanks for leaving such a detailed comment! On the pipe sizing question - there are standards (Wiki page link below in case it's helpful). Hopefully that can help match yours to the right size. One other viewer also made a good suggestion in that if your situation allows, you can remove and take the valve that you're replacing with you to the hardware store as a comparison when buying the new one.

Overall, you did a good video. But I'd suggest you turn off all background noises except your own voice. It's very annoying. Also some of the pictures/diagrams only stayed up a split second. Give the audience time to review for a few seconds or at least enough time to pause the video. You pushed the washing machine back into it's space without having to raise it up to get it into a drain pan. Do you not have a drain pan? Congrats on being a 1st-time homeowner. I'm sure you'll continue to learn & teach a lot thru the years...
Thanks, I appreciate the thoughtful feedback! I do not have a drain pan under the washing machine. It's on the first floor with a tile floor and slab below, so we don't have to worry about damaging lower floors/ceilings. But I also didn't really think much about it tbh, and it's a good point.
suggest you get yourself some sliders...they go under the feet of the washer and make moving the washer simple.

you are just lucky to have the stop valve screwed into the pipe, mine used soldering to the pipe, the box is plastic, there is no way to use a flame at all, can't understand why those idiots install the valve using soldering with a plastic box.

Hi Keith! It's hard to perform a moisture or plumbing pressure test via CZcams comments haha, so I can't really give advice here. But I will say that if you're at all concerned about having caused damage, or that you may have a water leak on your hands, I'd give a plumber a call. It'll be much cheaper than dealing with water damage! There are a lot of ways that they can quickly determine if you have an issue without having to remove drywall, etc. Copper is generally a pretty malleable material, but you never know what's going on inside the wall or at the fitting joints.

That's correct. In my case, the valves I bought didn't come with a red handle. For whatever reason, they were only sold with blue. I planned to swap the red handle from the old valve onto the new. But, surprise, the holes in the handles that fit over the valve stem were different sizes. So, beware if you plan to do the same.

It sounded like you were giving good info, but your music was so loud and obnoxious I couldn't think about the options you were giving us on the valves. Do you really feel a need to entertain people with the music. I need to hear and focus on what you are saying. One of the reasons it was difficult is you have a very nice soft voice and so the music and the beat were just overriding everything you said.
