The Science Behind Why We Age | Lifespan with Dr. David Sinclair #1

  • In this episode, Dr. David Sinclair and co-host Matthew LaPlante discuss why we age. In doing so, they discuss organisms that have extreme longevity, the genes that control aging (mTOR, AMPK, Sirtuins), the role of sirtuin proteins as epigenetic regulators of aging, the process of "ex-differentiation" in which cells begin to lose their identity, and how all of this makes up the "Information Theory of Aging", and the difference between "biological age" and "chronological age" and how we can measure biological age through DNA methylation clocks.

I started taking responsibility for my health in my early 20s. I stopped drinking - have not had one single drink since 1987, no cigarettes since 1993, I've had excellent nutrition and exercise. I have seen the amazing results for years, but now that I'm heading towards age 65, my efforts have paid off tremendously. I look and feel much better than 99% of my contemporaries. And now with all these new developments in knowledge, I benefit still. Something not mentioned by most practitioners too often is faith though. Thank you Dr. Sinclair for this insanely insightful work that you provide. It’s a pure pleasure to listen. It makes me smile to whiteness the similarities between your and Dr. Huberman’s podcast, knowing of course that he helped to ramp this up. It’s great to have such powerful people see collaborate. Matthew La Plante brings a nice twist to the topic. Highly enjoyable. Looking forward to the following 7 episodes.

Thank you so much for what you are doing 🙏
In your book you mentioned that in Hebrew there is a phrase "till 120" when people greet each other every birthday.
We also say in Hebrew "Lechaym" which means "to life" every time we raise our wine and cheers.
So, thank you for improving our quality and quantity of LIFE.
