Putin and Kim said they had good talks about their joint efforts to resolve a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear program, amid stalled negotiations with the United States.

1:28 fairly important bit here, Putin seemed proud to offer the gift and was focused on explaining it. Follow it up with a displeased look on his face concerning Kim's gift at the same time you see Kim talk to a person behind Putin. "He was talking to a translator or to his security staff." It doesn't matter, it was a political gift exchange and mannerism is more important than the gift. Damn right Putin noticed when Kim turned away.
2:00 Power play here, Putin forced Kim to be the one to turn, release grip and walk away. It was dominance assertion. He glanced at Kim's translator a few times to acknowledge the conversation but he never once "truly" broke eye contact, he again forced Kim to do so and Kim did multi times during the exchange. 2:06 and again at 2:23, 06 he broke full eye contact and at 23 he focused more on the translator than on Putin.
I'm not praising Putin, not at a time like this but damn he has shown how powerful of a leader he can be and this video lowkey shows how weak Kim really is. I'm not talking about power like "Oh my god political control blah blah" I'm talking about controlling a conversation, dominance assertion, like when you get into an argument with your parents and your grandparent speaks up and all of a sudden the conflict is over because your grandparent has that "kind of power."

If I may add, just before 2:00. Putin holds out his hand with, 'well, thanks for coming'. Kim may not have liked that kind of dismissal (in front of his people).
From 2:00 Kim crushes Putin's hand smiling all the while and looking away as if unaware of his own strength' - this is typical Asian bully technique. Notice the angle of Kim's hand. It's also the moment when Putin's jawline mildly tenses. As you said, Putin from then on 'never broke eye contact'.
