An important part of Emmitt Till’s story is that the white woman in question lied about what happened and she never apologized or showed any remorse for what she or her husband did (she only died last year at 88, so this was not long ago at all) nor did they receive any criminal recourse. It’s a horrific pieces of history that we have, unfortunately, not moved past at all 😢

It’s not a mystery thriller, but THE best twist I’ve ever read is in The Membranes by Chi Ta Wei, a taiwanese author, if you’re looking for nonwhite authors for the next batch. It’s truly such a wild book - technically more of a dystopian novella

I once managed to determine the culprit simply by process of elimination very early on.
Sometimes it's so obvious what fake outs an author has planned and by simply assuming those won't happen I chose the only leftover character as my suspect and 300p later turns out I was right 😂

I really like Lisa Jewell’s writing, but I agree it is not twisty or even very… mysterious? It’s just vaguely unsettling and a little uncertain at the end. That has been my experience of her other books I have read as well. It’s not for when you want to solve anything or be shocked, it’s more writing for when you want to have a slight ick about people who are sort of unhinged. 😂

The Trees was so weird and yet so funny. Aside from its heavy impact (it certainly packs a punch) and its unique premise, I remember often laughing because of the dry, deadpan humor. I live in the south and the idiocy of the white characters was painfully spot on. Percival Everett is a fantastic writer.

I rarely give Thrillers 5⭐ ... only one recently I can think of.. How Can I Help You by Laura Sims. A psychological thriller about an obsessive cat-n-mouse game between two librarians. Lord of the Fly Fest by Goldy Moldavsky is close to a 5⭐ just because it was so fun and she did something unexpected while still being inspired by Lord of the Flies.

I was one of the people that recommended The Last One to you and so glad you enjoyed it (except for the ending lol) I completely agree with you on the ending, I was quite annoyed at how ridiculous it was 😆 but 90% of the book was so much fun to read and had me wondering which direction it was going to go, so I'll call it a win. I actually clicked on this video because I've been waiting to see if you would ever review None Of This Is True because I HATED IT! 😅 After reading it, I was like...what am I missing here? I felt so enraged after reading this book. Aside from it feeling like a big old waste of time, is it just me, or did Lisa Jewell just gloss over and justify the actions of a pedophile/sexual predator and that of a neglectful husband/father who goes on alcohol and drug binges? I didn't feel like there were any real twists because everything felt pretty predictable.

The Last House on Needless Street is still messing with me. Definitely recommend anything by Catriona Ward but that one is my favorite.
None of This is True was my first and last Lisa Jewell. Not for me.

I loved None of This is True, but I wouldn't recommend it as twisty at all. It's more of a slow build dread where you know what's happening and you're watching it play out. I found the audio to be a great experience.

It will never matter how long it’s been since I’ve read the “it was just a dream” twists. Could be 10 years and the instant I read it it will automatically be a 1 star. I hate that so much lol.

I also 👀 the little detail in The Drift and guessed the twist and gave it a 4.5. I enjoyed it more than The Burning Girls.

Thank you for not liking "None of This is True" every person I know who reads LOVES it and I DNF'd after 40 pages. I absolutely could not do it.

If you are looking for young adult mystery with some good reveals, I recommend Firekeeper’s Daughter and Warrior Girl Unearthed.

If you admit to self out loud you figured out twist early on then the book looses steam .
Has happend to me. Lisa Jewel is really good , speaking of twists.

Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent and The Majesties by Tiffany Tsao have good twists. Lying in Wait made my jaw drop. The Majesties is more of a slow burn twist.

You should let your followers / subscribers “pitch” you books and you pick what to read SOLELY based off the pitches!
