  • This was the 2nd live ejection carried out by Martin-Baker in 1946 by the brave MB employee Benny Lynch - a Fitter who volunteered to carry out a number of ejection tests for the company.
    Here you can see Benny eject from the aircraft in a pre-Mk.1 Ejection Seat - having to unstrap himself from the seat while falling, kick himself out of the falling seat and then deploy his own parachute.

    Martin-Baker still uses the Gloster Meteor as a testbed for its ejection systems.

    Great footage. It's a shame no one speaks like the narrator does anymore though, that accent/dialect is hilarious!

    Lynch did this kind of testing of the MB ejection seats many many times. This was the era of real test pilots, before Elf and Safety. Nowadays it would take years to develop things that took months in those days.
