Log Finnish Sauna | Pemmican Recipe | Cabin Life | Canadian Wilderness

- I continue building the Finnish style log sauna in the Canadian wilderness as the temperature plummets, thankful for the warmth of the wood stove in the cabin at night. The first day is silent with no wind, relatively mild temperatures just below freezing with ravens and chickadees circling my dog and I, looking for a free meal from the bones laying in the snow around the cabin. The following morning, a powerful wind develops, ushering in a deep freeze and a few more inches of snow on top of the 30 plus inches already on the ground. I cook walleye (pickerel) for dinner one night, a keto breakfast in the morning and braised beef shank, venison loin and ground deer meat for lunch and dinner the following day, all cooked on the woodstove inside the cabin.
I open subscriber mail and gifts in front of the snow while Cali, my Golden Retriever, watches, looking for her share. On the second day, I make chaga tea from chaga mushrooms harvested from the yellow birch trees on my land.
Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe.

I am glad that you like my knife design. The steel is AUS8, handle scales are G-10, and I have designed the end of the handle so that you can use it in an extended grip for chopping. I hope the APO-1 will serve you well. All the best. Lilly
I really love the knife... But all things considered... I absolutely love Lilly so much much more. :-I
Very nice knife. I admire it. Very kind of you to send one. Do you have place where you can purchase. I follow your channel as well, but I'm sorry I can't find a link.
Lilly, I love that knife. I checked your online shop all sold out! I really want one!
Thanks Lilly!
This is a beautiful knife. Lilly's channel is amazing.
You can tell how Cali appreciated those few moments of attention that you gave her. Loved it myself.
Cali, bless her, it's like she knows when you need to stop for a sec and take a breather. She's one in a million!
Never thought watching someone doing something so mundane as clearing snow off of anything could be so peaceful and therapeutic ! Love it ! Thanks again for this channel !
Film preparation, film breakdown and editing not to mention the physical labor that goes into these videos. It's a lot of work! Thank you Shawn!
You must spend a lot of time on these videos before you post it on youtube. Thank You for bringing us along on your journey!
WoW ~ It’s a full hour of Shawn James during the Canadian Wilderness Ice Age 🌬💨❄️🥶
Golden Retrievers have to be one of the most affectionate animals around!
As all dog/pet lovers do, I interpret what Cali is doing when she interrupts your work on the sauna. “Dad take a break. You need some Cali loves. Come on give me some back. There, you got some Cali. Everything is good.”
We have a saying here... There is no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes
That's true...
We got the same saying here in sweden :)
In Sweden, we have a saying ‘no clothes’.
Add in either dampness to the cold or humidity to the heat and I don’t think there is a “right” clothes.
I have never found any clothing that will keep me warm on damp day with only -2*C but today with -24*C (~-10*F) south of Shawn’s cabin I was quite comfortable outside as I shoveled my driveway and front patio.
We say that too in switzerland. ^^
Great video Shawn thanks for opening the window to your life and letting us experience it.
I love Cali, her personality is so cool, she is a very special animal.
Hi I am new to your channel and absolutely love your lifestyle. So peaceful to watch.
You are one very patient man that works so hard. You are really inspiring.
Even your food looks great and smells wonderful.
And Cali she is such a cute darling and a wonderful devote friend to you. What does she eat?
Ellie Belli!!! You have Smellavision???!!! Oh wow! :D
@@mawmawvee I have a great imagination.

Beautiful way to start my Friday!! I get a kick out of your almost embarrassment that you exhibit when you receive gifts from your subscribers.. it shows what a truly humble soul you are. What a unique situation and gift it is to feel love from people you have never met, eh? Thank you again for all of your efforts to share this amazing quest you are on. My advice for this week? Embrace your inner avocado! 🥑Good wishes from the Applegate River in Southern Oregon, where it is a balmy 55 degrees today! 😎🌲
I know I comment a lot about Cali 😊 but she is more beautiful every time I see her.
Because she is happy when the dogs are happy they get proper beautiful
American Patriot I agree Cali is a beautiful dog!
Lynn James thanks for the reply, I too have a golden retriever so I favor all Goldie’s.😊😊
Lynn James - I’m mad about Cali!!!
Her eyes
Cali loves you, so endearing to watch truly "mans best friend"!
Your grin after you said you thought you would never see the top of the walls! That grin was awesome to see. How happy the work progress makes you is wonderful.
My favorite moment: the relieved, satisfied smile after hoisting the final log over the doorway.... What a great feeling!
I wish the people that gave a thumbs down would point out what is wrong with the video. This series of video's are the most enjoyable, relaxing, and almost always educational videos going. ( I say almost always because sometimes you just have to stop to enjoy the land. You don't need instructions for that. )
Wait a week - those haters will have videos on their channels with a similar title and/or content to this one. It's a funny pattern - coincidence only I'm sure :)
jealousy is a strange motive
Haters are always going to hate.
I think it's just little brats who think why do this when you can just go to mcdonalds and starbucks..
Sad thing is that a Thumbs down weighs so heavy on the CZcams rating algorythm that one needs atousand extra likes to fix them.. sigh and for what reason. if there was obscene language or a distasteful content sure I give people all the right to downvote that but Shawns channel is always positive and enjoyable I really don't get it why people do this. if you find some of it boring then skip on to another channel or clip. There is no reason to make someone elses life hard just with one click.
You got my thumbs up Shawn !
A one hour video fantastic time to snuggle down, thanks Shawn.
Shawn as a born and raised Finlander I commend you of the job well done, I have lived in Canada since -78 built few saunas with electric heaters but there is nothing better that one with wood heating, awesome videos my friend you could survive anywhere!!
Those red chairs are so garish in a rustic cabin. I love it!
I'm looking forward to seeing this. I'm from Finland and my family has an 90yr old sauna by a lake.
Cali sure likes to trail blaze. Awesome footage.
Progress even in all that snow and freezing temps. The snow looks so beautiful from where I am sitting. Cali has the sweetest face.
your videos always put me in a good mood. Thank you
Watching you work so hard is wearing me out lol. Cali is so special and the way you two love each other is so obvious. She is a very special girl.
Shawn you are the great motivator! Your work ethic and philosophy on life are also very inspiring. Can't wait to see the finished sauna. Happy Friday to you and Cali!! Have a good weekend.
Cali knows that when you open mail that there could be a gift for her. It’s happened before...she knows 😀
Thanks for the longer video really enjoyed it, God Bless you and your family
Another great video thanks Shawn , I never take the effort you put into these videos for granted !
Thank you
Thank you
WOW, that's a really nice knife from survival Lilly, you're nearing 700k Shawn, it won't be long and you'll be celebrating one million
Great respect for your courage and will to live your dream Shawn! And i love Cali she is unique!!
Would be spectacular to view Cali's day and night thru a "go pro"...
PLEASE.
Prayers to keep you both safe on this journey. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you for showing us just how to be one with the nature
35 mins in looks like Narnia as you enter through the wardrobe, absolutely stunning. Such a beautiful place you have there.
loved the moment of affection shared with Cali.
I love the video Sean keep on putting them out there would you be able to invite Joe back to the cabin I love those videos where him and others come out to you and stay in the cabin and go hike somewhere else the next day.
Can't wait to see the sauna finished. I have two. One in the house and one in outhouse. Pretty common here in Finland😉
I wish he finished it too, he would've finished sooner if he used powertools.
Joy optimal, Yes, but he wouldn't have that great "ripped" body he's got now and wouldn't be so much stronger. There is that reward for him. :D
Meilläkin kuten useella suomalaisella on usea sauna, mut ulkovessassa ei sentään vielä oo :D
Piharakennusta ihan tarkotin 😉
Mukava heitellä löylyjä samalla kun vääntää paskaa?
I like your videos Shawn, because they are very relaxing it is a little bit of a break from the main part of my life. Thanks
Watching your videos I get to live the life i would love to live.... at least for a few minutes I get to forget my daily struggles. Love the videos, brother.
Be cool people Shawn does at time need his time to reflect, also be careful what you send because if he can't use it then he has to store it and the cabin isn't that big. Be sincerely conscious before sending. "Just helping a nice guy say what he cannot".
right on
Hi Shawn, It's Laura from Ohio. I sent the pillows to you and your family hoping you'd find them useful for the cabin. I believe you placed the Christmas card that was in the box with them on the table behind you. (It has a black border and trees on it.) I am very, very pleased that you like the pillows and hope that you all enjoy them! I've been watching for a while and I often share your website(s) with my friends and encourage them to subscribe! BTW, I also purchased the Cabin Life hooded sweatshirt for myself and I love it. Kudos to your wife on the design! Blessings to you all in the coming year. :-)
Thank you very much Laura!
I am from Arizona, that snow fall is epic. Love seeing it come down. Blessings to you and family.
Thank you shawn..im old and you take me places i cant go again..it means a great deal to me seeing your shows..thanks..cowboy..
Hi Shawn, saw you are using a Griswold #8 frying pan. Best cast iron pans ever made. I grew up in Erie, PA where they were made and I have several sets that belonged to my grandparents and parents plus others I picked up at garage sales, etc. They are great when you take care of them and keep them properly "seasoned" I have some pans that date back to the early 1900's that are in great shape and true collectors items. They will last for generations when properly cared for. My 5 kids are looking forward to the day when they get to divvy them up between them. Great channel, watch it all the time. Totally enjoy your "projects".
I have a Lodge 8"skillet from about 2001 I bought at Walmart. Used it 2 years then sanded it smooth and reseasoned. Its glass smooth now and eggs slide around so much it's hard to get a spatula under to flip. I also just received my granny's Wagner 8"skillet fro mid 1940's. It cooks just a little more nonstick than Lodge. 60 more years of seasoning. I also have a 100 year old griddle that covers half a stove weighs about 60 lbs. Love old cast iron. That stuff is indestructible. Believe ms I've tried.
@@michaelanderson1859 That't the beauty of Griswold, Wagner and other older brand cast iron. They started out smooth and, while it takes a little more effort to season properly, they are a superior surface to cook on. I have several Lodge skillets and a dutch oven, all of which I ground/sanded smooth. I don't think the cast is as good a quality, but they work. My son, sons-in-law and grandkids all go camping together in the Northeast PA woods a couple of times a year and everything gets cooked on cast iron over an open fire. Nothing better! I too have a double griddle and it is a hefty piece. Thanks for the reply Michael

The steps to the loft are extra counter space. Love it.
How good for your soul, that you always have time to show Cali some affection. I've missed the log dog. I haven't seen you use it in quite a while.
That snow scene in the opening aerials is staggering. Have never seen such a heavy snowfall. Could bore all day about rain, due to the frequency Mother Nature drops it on us but snow, now, that would be fun. Greetings from an Irish hillside!
I'm from Ireland and I hate snow hope we don't get another beast from the east.
You probably love the snow, but after 76 years of it, I don't anymore! Just plain tired of it!!!! Cali is such a special girl...when she tries to catch the shovels of snow, it is so much fun to watch! I think she is the happiest dog on the internet shows! I do hope you are NOT offended by my hunting comment. My mom hunted & got even an antelope...My dad was a hunter...my brother was a huge hunter....bagged a dear every year since I was a very young girl. He bagged a bear, a mountain lion, a bore, and many, many other types of game. I grew up with hunters, it's just not my thing....but I do understand kind, law abiding hunters. LOL Judie
Better than most outdoor, building, wilderness television production out there. I enjoy your channel thank you for the work you do.
Чага и пемикан =жизнь! Согласен на 100%!👍🏼👍🏾👍🏿👍🔥🏕️Охота, рыбалка. Строитель гениальный, больше года уже за строительством сауны слежу отлично делаете.!
We feel like we know you, that's why they send you things...like you would any friend..
Hey, I'll tell you what. That keto diet works!! Been on it a week and my gut is melting away. Feeling great! Love your channel!
Love to see you and Cal take time to bond (love) each other. Pets are so nice to have.Have a blessed day.
Great work Shawn, Cali again steels the show, man what a superstar
Nepal ! I love the way you build house in snow
Good Friday Shawn and Cali! All the cooking in this video made me so hungry!
Thanks 4 including the wind and storm sounds, freezes our blood down here in southern Kentucky! added so much to the video.
Hi Shawn...thanks again another good day.. learning so much from watching this episode.. I was shocked by the kindness of all you're viewers ....god bless brother...
I enjoyed the longer video, thank you.
Shawn, you should make a My Self Reliance cookbook. I would buy it for sure!
Shawn won't continue to chop wood, if he continues to eat Mapel syrup, white flour and meat that's full of parasites! Apart from his diet; a great, motivatonal bloke! Blessings to you, Shawn!
Keeley Bothwell - speaking as a vegan, I can see that Shaun's choice of yang food (meat, primarily) gives him the energy he needs to do the physically intense work that he does. If he were a vegetarian, that’s when he wouldn’t sustain his capability to lift logs and trek through snow up to his knees.
Love the extended viewing time , thank you for sharing your life with us.
Hello from Off Grid in Hawaii....sunny and beautiful here today. Lots of geckos to contend with and mildew. The Little Fire Ants are fierce. Everyplace has its joys and challenges. Thank you for all you do!!
Hey Shawn, around 6:48, one of your tools dropped into the snow. Make sure you don't lose it! Love the channel!
I have ALWAYS hated *losing tools* due to my own carelessness or thievery.
Watching whilst on dialysis. Thanks for the videos. What is intro music please gets my foot tapping
Aw man I can't wait until this sauna is up and running! ! It's going to be awsome sitting in there
Nice gifts, you are very loved for sharing your life. Thank you and Cali
My 5 month old chocolate lab watches your vids with me. Its hilarious, she is glued to it when Cali is on. I live 5 minutes from that Cabelas. Welcome to the neighbourhood. LOL
When the sun is shining, it looks as if it is warm, but it is still very cold, the spring is far away, but it will come!!
Cali loving all the smells from subscribers lol. Good girl. Congrats on getting first log on the top. You could see the joy on your face for hitting that milestone. Thanks as always.
Absolutely, totally enjoying this beautiful snow blanket. Hi CALI.
Can anyone think of something that beats a long lunch to a new My Self Reliance video? I can't!
Nice to see a new sauna episode drop. Guess what I'm about to watch. ❤👍 Thanks Shawn, love your channel.
Great video...i dont know if its just me..but the sound of the lumber being hit together is very therapeutic to me..hug Cali for me🐕💞
Shawn, I look forward to Fridays for your videos. God Bless you and Cali. Stay warm by the fire tonight!
Survival Lilly is a fine woman.
another awesome video. i hope to do this someday! oh well i’ll just stick to making bushcraft videos for now.
Thanks Shawn for sharing your incredible knowledge on outdoor survival and building. You are a teacher with much wisdom and patience. If you ever decided to open a survival school, you would not be lacking students......
Cali gets best supporting actress award 😀
Carry on Sir! I love your attitude!
Hi Shawn. You are living the life for sure up there. Beautiful country Canada. I have (adopted) relatives up north in Noelville right on the French river. Love that clean living. Thanks, Shawn. Watching the vid has set me up nicely for the weekend 😃 Have a safe one!
SUPER VIDEO!!!
How did you manage to find so many logs all of approximately equal diameter? Did they come from a plantation? Great work Shawn. Watching your vids is the highlight of my Friday night. Much love from Oz.
Cabin life = Work work work. Great stuff Shawn

Hi Shawn from New Zealand,
I watch your videos from start to finish and give a hearty thumbs up.
what I love is your zeal and drive, you have the plans in your head and
heart. My other love is nature, the wild life and their struggle to live, you
give a wonderful coverage of that, your cooking is so awesome, the
mixture of medium rear meat your choice of greens, and how you cook
it, not over cooked but just browned off.
The sauna is great and how much work you do on your own is really
inspiring, the young NEED to watch these (I get my grand children to
watch your videos with me and I explain as best I can what you are
doing) we have a 180 acre farm up in the bay of islands, 60 in grass
60 in swamp and brush, and 60 in native forest, when the go up for
a holiday, they are hardly ever seen both boys and girls, the 2 oldest
girls are 15 and 14 and the next are the 2 boys aged 10 and 9. They
go into the forest (with packages of food) and make their own
shelters and sleep out in the wild.
Here in New Zealand we have NO aggressive animals no snakes
bears, wolves. The worst are the mozzies....... so they are and will
not have wild animals hunting them. The boys want to build a cabin
like yours and have started drawing up plans.
SO you have inspired Young boys here in New Zealand and I thank you
for all that you do. I send my blessing and good thoughts to you, your
wife and family.
Thank you from a happy great grand father from New Zealand.
Andrew Morgan.
