Sauna Build Alone with My Dog in a Snowstorm | Bottling/Canning Meat over Fire

I continue with the sauna build, slowed down by a snowstorm one day and frigid temperatures the next, forcing me to pile the logs on top of the sauna walls and build a fire underneath to thaw them out. My dog, Cali the Golden Retriever, is at my side as always, relentlessly retrieving her training bumper until she falls asleep in front of the fire in the cabin.
Inside the log cabin, I bottle (can) meat in a pressure canner on top of the wood-stove. I fry trout in cast iron on the woodstove and for breakfast, I continue my temporary ketogenic diet with a substantial meal of eggs, bacon and cheddar cheese fried in butter. To keep warm during the day while working on the log sauna, I place a cast iron pan on the fire inside the sauna under the tarp and logs and I heat up some leftover beef ribs and lamb shank in tomato sauce.

Sauna is coming along nicely,Cali is her usual happy self,all's right in the world lol.
Canned beef was a treat growing up. It usually showed up in the kitchen about February when the fresh stuff was done. There were on average 7 to 9 people at our table so the common use would be two jars mixed into a bag of cooked macaroni with some bread (mom called it "bread of the day"). We never knew it was a cheap meal... in fact it was one of our favourites and it was always beef from our farm.... but now I'm putting an age on myself when I look back at memories over 30 years ago. My how things have changed.

HillBillyVilly I have found that beef has changed since 30 years ago. Like you, we ate beef that was raised on our family farm which I loved...Now that I live in a big city, I buy my beef from the store and I can taste a huge difference. The store beef is usually cut wrong and tastes like plastic wrap. Yuk! My mom use to can the beef as well. She mixed it with baked beans, barbecue sauce and slowed cooked it for a few hours in the crook pot. My mom called it "Mom's Famous Fart Sauce." 😂 That was a very yummy meal unfortunately it made everyone in the house a little gassy. 😂

when u was shoveling the snow away from the door..and when u was tossing the snow away cali was jumping up to catch the snow...i started laughing...that was what my dog use to do he make me laugh and i love him for that and we had fun...but now he gone to heaven....God Bless Him....

sir, i could watch your videos endlessly! i have recently come across your videos on youtube and i am trying to find and watch as many of them as i can. this is so therapeutic for me. stunning visual quality. i have never been an outdoorsy kind of guy, and watching these kinds of videos kind of makes me wish i was. and i was actually raised pretty much in the mountains of kentucky, but live in knoxville, tennessee now. and i am 63 years old. i used to go in the mountains and hunt ginseng with my dad and me and my brothers did also, and go tracking in the woods and stuff like that. i have great memories of it. i just never learned how to build things as you are doing and i love watching this. thanks for sharing all of this with us.i absolutely love these videos!

@My Self Reliance Shawn,i have to say i just love cali to death. that dog is so energetic and she gets into everything you do. she loves it when you shovel the snow,she goes after each toss like you are doing it just for her. same thing when you are splitting wood, she dives after every chip that goes flying. cali loves you and she loves life and she loves where she lives.

Sitting here in the deep south that snow looks beautiful... I imagine the beauty fades after about 3 days.
Wow you are such a hardworking man. Weather doesn’t stop you. You, ice fish, hunt, make syrup from trees, build, without electricity, chip wood, mushroom hunt, cook like a chef, can meat, jams, and no telling what all you can do. You made a outdoor kitchen a log home with out door restroom and now a sauna. You are a expert on movie making, photography, canoeing, hiking, camping, fishing , baking, and making furniture. I’m sure I left out quite a bit, domestically speaking. I’m thankful you took us on this journey with you! I hope it makes other men see the potential in a determined and hard working spirit. Also. I love to see you using Old Bay. We eat a lot of seafood done here and that is a main seasoning. My dad even used it on popcorn at our cabin up north.
Every time I watch you prepare your meals I think, "this is not just a man in a cabin". This is a world renown chef incognito in the forest of Canada:) And all the hard work you do in the snow and cold, you can certainly eat anything you want and not worry about calories. No fit bit watch for you. Great video!

i wish the internet had been around 40 years ago and i had seen these videos in my teens.i would have been motivated then to do all this. these days i am a broken down diabetic with nerve damage.
things could have been different....Sigh....
@@hellshade2 never give up ! i had nerve damage in my spine at 45 after having a quarterzone injection . suffered uncontrollable jolts to my arms and head and constantly grunted as my arms flung around across my chest . night time in bed id have phantom mini strokes and was constantly at hospital on the stroke ward, life was an adventure id say. i spent all my time on youtube learning alternative medicine in plants. now i dont know your story but stinging nettles helped alot and you should research it , the sting has a nerve agent in it and i periodically stung my back then put the nettles in hot water , drank it and ate the rest . there is so much to be done and grounding is your friend so take off your rubber shoes and earth youself outside for as long as you can . research Grounded the movie . it took me about 2 years but im all good now and planning my first push bike camp adventure at 50yrs through the mountains in 2 months . what i soon realised during my research is the medical professionals are not there to support you or your health , they work for big pharma as drug pushers . also you should watch " dr john bergman " his posts are legend . i wish you all the luck in your recovery buddy and have one more peace of knowledge for you. the words you speak and the thoughts you have are extremely powerful if used in intention so only think and speak positively and you will start to heal ! i learned how to energy heal with my hands and mind with intent and have the ability to shrink tumours . iknow it sounds bonkers but we all have the ability to take energy from the earth and use it. They just hide it from us hense the rubber soles on our shoes .

lol, I know, I'm giving Shawn a compliment. I'd love to have his will and determination ...I suppose if I'd be living this lifestyle myself there would be a bit more ease. Nevertheless in my present situation battling logs in the snow would have me swearing at the moment 😉

I've been to the United States and Canada many times, but only in the summer, showing people what it was like over two hundred years ago when people settled there, building their first homes, and going through hard times.

2 hundred yrs ago????? My friend that way of life or a little less rustic then what Shawn is doing is quite common here...….Everybody has a cottage, cabin or goes camping quite a bit here in Canada. Well at least us middle aged Canadians anyway.....Most of the younger ones cant seem to pry their eyes away from their screen.
