  • Phillips de Pury & Company Chairman, Simon de Pury, presents Jean-Michel Basquiat's 'Humidity', 1982. During his early years in the public spotlight-from 1980 to 1982-Jean- Michel Basquiat's progression as an artist was nuclear. His explorations into the subconscious imagery of the human psyche along with his integration of myriad cultural and anatomical tropes makes him one of the most recognized artists of the contemporary era. Throughout these years, we bear witness to a series of crowned figures living many lives: luminous, thorny, even cubic, and polygonal. Humidity, 1982, comes at the height of Basquiat's unprecedented artistic revelations of the human condition. The painting yields limitless treasures of Basquiat's generous spirit, and his sharp observations.
It has been suggested that the central figure in Humidity, 1982, illustrates Basquiat's friend and most influential mentor -- Andy Warhol. The fright-wig, highlighted with bold white oilstick, is perhaps the most telling sign as it mirrors the famed friseur of the legendary teacher to Basquiat. It has also been suggested that the dynamic and joyful figure to the right is actually the portrait of Swiss dealer Bruno Bischofberger. As their gallerist, Bischofberger had championed both Warhol and Basquiat's careers and nurtured the artistic collaborations between the two. While Warhol and Basquiat's collaborations would come after the creation of Humidity, 1982, becomes a distinctive homage to Warhol and Bischofberger, two men who had greatly influenced the young Basquiat.

There R thousands of basquiats on earth. Only one gets to be glorified ?. I'm a fan of jmb myself. And a fan of unknowns. Folks love my art. They make offers and I refuse. Why because they aren't splurging millionaires. I need my house paid off my truck restored. Hit my thumbnail take a peak millionaires only please...

Jean-Michel loved Andy Warhol and Andy loved him. You get the feel of joy that Jean-Michel felt about Andy in this painting. Even the nose is like a heart in some ways. Pure brilliance as usual!

JM: Look, I made a funny painting of that day you said it was humid, like I promised!
Andy: WTF hahahah you really did it! And it looks like it's from kindergarten, too! Brilliant LMAO!
JM: Imagine how people are going to try to find hidden meanings and contrasts in this! *WHEEZE*
Andy: Not knowing you just splattered colors around like a toddler! *WHEEEEEEEZE*
2012: One forgets what a great colorist Basquiat is! The pink in the top left corner! The yellow, orange at the top! You see many different techniques that Jean-Michel Basquiat used in this work. And the whole is a joyous wonderful expressionist masterwork!

I am his hero.... He paints like me although he died before I new what texture was. When I express thru colored liquids, solids and sprays... Basquiat possesses my hand unto the canvas of his/my choosing. Sometimes we paint on objects deemed inappropriate landing me in jail or with a black eye. I dont understand the process of the imagination but I am always at its mercy.

This really looks like Andy Warhol because of the spikey hair and the red nose.If one looks at videos created not long before Andy Warhol's death one can clearly see the tell tale red nose of an alcoholic. This is strange because I've read more than one biography about Andy Warhol and no one ever describes him as being an alcoholic at anytime in his life.

You are stupid and ignorant. Years of history, from Rembrandt, to Monet, finally we are here. All great artist, all great genius artist, wanted to make art way free. Its not about being like a child. Its about being free, like a child. And improve like a child. Art is not for idiots, but every idiot wanna touch it, and beat it. Coz they dont understand it. And thats making them feel bad about themselfs.
