  • I purchased this engine with a free boat attached for $150 bucks about 3 years ago.
    sold the boat and kept this engine as a spare parts source for the 70hp I have on my 1983 VIP
    boat, the engine has gone the way of the dinosaur so now I'm going to try and see what
    condition this parts engine is in.
    Going into this I don't expect much.
    Follow along and experience the high or low with me.
    like and comment if you want to see more.
    If you hated this and think I'm an idiot then please comment and tell me about it, every comment helps the channel grow.
    Thanks for watching as always.

    Nice my man we had a 70 on our 14 foot valiant Chrysler boat. The thing was a rocket ship until we hit our top speed you were left in the dust really durable awesome motor very dependable here we are 50+ years later runs like a top.

    Super helpful. I have a Chrysler 120HP hinged to a skeeter 175D. Just going thru the progressions to get the motor running as we speak. This was really valuable to check some of the boxes to eliminate issues. Well done

    Id say the rubber water pump impeller will be hardened. Im not quite sure where it is on an old outboard. wi water it will not last long if its still any good.
    Best to have water running into it or put it in a barrel
    of water when your running it.

    Boat - a way to use up money you didnt know what to do with lol
    But its a clean boat, no floor or transom rot.
    But too small for me. I like something bigger with a small bathroom. Im buying a 97 four winns 225 cuddy cabin. needs floor rehab, inboard 5.7L v8 does turn over, dbl axle trailer cost $980 to get rolling again - surge brakes!
    now god only knows if there is a block crack from improper winterizing. But only 400hrs. prop it missing a few chunks - did it tweek the shaft enough to be a problem - maybe/maybe not. upholstery needs to ho in the burn bucket.

      @BrokenWrenches  Před 2 lety

      That depends on what type of ignition system it has, i would assume it has the single ignition coil and rectangular control box??
      In any case you need to use a electrical meter to check for battery voltage at the coil and or ignition box connections.

    • @BrokenWrenches
      @BrokenWrenches  Před rokem +1

      Hey. The engine in this video is a distributor but not a points setup, it has a photo eye in it, the big white CD box controls the spark. The early engines had an actual points distributor,,,a points distributor looks almost identical externally, they only have 1 wire exiting the distributor. Nobody makes the distributor new. Best bet is ebay.
      There are two styles of pump, either will work, most common is the glass bowl style…sierra marine has kits for carbs and pumps. Oreillys has the catalog.
      Cables are another matter. Sometimes you can find used or nos on ebay. Make sure you measure them.

    In your analysis of the motor which gave up after 3 seasons you stated that you thought you had a mixture problem with the centre cylinder which caused the scuffed piston and the "blowback" through the carb....
    if so, transferring the carbs from that engine to the "new" one is transferring the possible cause to the new engine.....
    So, was it a problem with the mixture (blocked/partially blocked jet?) of the centre carb...
    or was there a problem with the reed valve allowing spit back through that carb?
    If the reed valve has not been transferred to the new engine...just recheck the centre carb jets and balance the carbs (See Dangar Marine for balancing carbs)
    When you ran the outboard "just to start it" completely dry...just starting it....you ruined the impellor...I presume you have a spare new one to put on?
    Do you have muffs to run the water into the engine or do you use a drum full of water for test runs?
    If you use muffs, clamp the muffs with extra clamps on to the intakes and never run above idle.....you will ruin the impellor again.
    The problems that seem to kill more old outboards than anything else appear to be maintenance related
    impellors, thermostats, carb balancing,
    mixture incorrect especially too little oil or using air cooled 2 stroke oil in water cooled engines
    www.nmma.org/certification/oil/tc-w3
    using ethanol gas, failing to install water separator filters in fuel lines
    www.amazon.com/SeaSense-Fuel-Filter-Clear-Bowl/dp/B004XAEWW0/ref=zg_bs_3397791_9/139-8732995-2575513?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=0FDHCVCBA0MQG87G3NC9
    failing to drain fuel bowls at end of season, failing to use water repellant sprays on engine when storing it, failing to replace lower unit gear oil every season. etc.etc.
    Those old Chrysler outboards had style...and you must have had more than a few double-takes from people when you ran hard and fast at the lake.....on a 50 year old engine....
    Looking forward to more vids doing it all...and doing it right.......

      Thank you very much for your insight. Yep i have a couple new impellers on standby, my uncle owns a big boat repair shop 600miles away from me, he says a new impeller can be destroyed in as little as 30 seconds when run dry. I usually use a big plastic trash can full of water for test runs. I’m unsure about wether the damaged cylinder was due to overheat or due to lean fuel mixture, which would then cause an overheat? One thing for certain the center cylinder was hotter/leaner. These old motors are so loud that I’m not certain i would have heard the overheat alarm at higher speeds?
      Also possible that the impeller housing scoring was bad enough to cause weak flow??
      I’m no expert by a long shot.
      The damage could have simply been normal wear and tear.
      I do enjoy running an ancient 2 stroke.
      Thanks for watching and commenting, im sure i will update every one when i get to the next step with this one, this motor may not run good at all at operating temps.

    i have the same motor, 70 hp model 707hf(salt water version). really liked your video. i am also just a backyard fun mechanic. i ran my motor for 7 years with no problems but after it sat for two years due to the covid thing and i tried to start it, it backfired or exploded more like it maybe due to all the starter fluid i put into it and then never got it to fire/run even for one pop. i took it to two boat repair shops and all they did was burn out the starter motor and tell me they had no idea why it would not start. you have any ideas? could the reed valves be so destroyed that the motor can't start? thanks anyway, vince g.

    • @BrokenWrenches
      @BrokenWrenches  Před rokem

      Good question, if it exploded out the exhaust I wouldn’t be super concerned. If it came out the carbs then it had to pass through the reed valves, could be damaged. Could also be ignition related. Hard to say. Check compression first.

    i hope you reoved the impeller before starting it dry like that! on the #2 cyl... could you feel any ridges with your finger? did you re-use the old head gasket? sometimes you can, but put some gel-seal/loctite 515 on the cylinders where the firing rings sit or else they will leak eventually, really trashing the motor. love those old battery-powered ignitions. instant starts even when cold. cheers.
