Why does Motorola choose to have their FRS / GMRS radios default with CTCSS on? Thats that second 1 below the channel number now 8f you try to use a different brand of FRS / GMRS radio in channel 1 the Motorola would not open it's squelch without the proper CTCSS code. And its probably the reason why they were on clearance people thought they didn't work.

bought this exact radio from costco, 2 sets so a total of 4. Range was horrrible, no where near 3mi, 2mi or even 1mi in the city or both being on the fwy. i guess they expect you to be in the wide open with no trees at all. returning them today.
all walkie talkies are like that. the range assumes you are either on a totally flat area with no obstructions or for max range one person is required to be elevate due to the curvature of the earth will cut off signal well under 3 miles assuming you hold it at your waste etc etc etc.... and also assuming you accept the fact the earth is round...
@@bobspurloc are there any non license required walkies out there that put out higher power to be able to cut through city stuff for 3 mile range or so?
@@seaweedmike im no ham expert but I would think no. but who is calling the fcc police these days if you dont have a license? also I dont believe the issue is the power. u cant transmit through things. radio stations have high antenna so they can reach farther but they arent going to penetrate a tunnel regardless of their power output.
