50something metalhead here! I saw the birth of Heavy Metal and I'm a fan of many subgenres, from old school vintage Metal to Trash, Death, Black and much more! If people told me just one year ago that Gojira would play at the Olympics opening ceremony, I wouldn't have believed it. Awesome achievement and performance! The French revolution was extremely violent and bloody, the raw power and energy of Gojira's music fits this historical event perfectly. This is Metal AF!
Ah çà ira" was a popular song during the French revolution. It basically says: It will be OK, let's hang the aristocrats from the lamp posts and the people will be ok. This castle is la Conciergerie, the prison where political opponents awaited their execution by guillotine. You can see beheaded people at the windows. The "blood" is made of small pieces of red paper.The ship is on the city of Paris' coat-of-arms with the motto "fluctuat nec mergitur", meaning the ship is in a storm but will not sink. It is a symbol of resilience.
The opera singer is a metalhead, she was a metal singer before starting an opera singer career.

The castle in the videos is the one were the french queen Marie antoinette was jailed before going to the guillotine
For a lot of people out there it was the best part of the opening ceremony, many of my coworker/family who aren't metalhead told me they like this part

There's a French historical quote which says: "Paris vaut bien une messe" (Paris is well worth a mass). Henry IV, Paris, July 25, 1593.
Take several minutes to copy/paste it in Qwant, or in Google, to see the context. To me, in a way, this quote fits perfectly well to Gojira in Paris.
Been listening to metal since I was 13 and that was 43 years ago. From the 1st listen to Sabbath's Paranoid album in my Jr. high school friends room, I was hooked. When I saw this live, I couldn't believe it was really happening. It was actually really emotional for me. 1st of all, Gojira is bad ass, and they crushed it. And for France to have the balls to do this on a stage w/ between 1 and 2 BILLION people watching???.......serious props to their Olympic commitee and event organizers for their bravery. They represented Metal hard and it was amazing. The emotional part was that it felt like Metal had all of a sudden exploded from the deep pit within which all us metal heads revel and mosh in it's greatness. And in the next instant was just hovering there on the side of that castle and blowing peoples minds. Even the annoying commentators were like "Oh my God...what are we seeing?", but in a good way. IMHO a huge moment of "validation" for metal and I'd wager the band will look back on that moment as probably the biggest of their career.
I had goosebumps all over made me emotional to see metal on such a big stage...Just freaking loved it so much🎸🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

One thing that has kept me smiling is the amazing reactions from you metal heads. I've watched a lot of "reaction videos" from all around the world and, each time, I saw people react like we should all react: as kids ready to be amazed without any stupid second thoughts.
I found metal lovers to be really kind and happy people and even got out with a playlist for an introduction to metal for my upcoming vacation :)
What is really funny, though, is how much time you guys can spend arguing about what sub genre or sub sub genre a given band belongs to.

A little clarification for those who would like to understand the words sung at the beginning, It is a song dating from the French Revolution, which even now all French people know very well.

In english : "Ha it will be fine/ok, the aristocrats to the Street lamp, ha it will be fine, the aristocrats we will hang them !" ... ... ...
Singing this literally in front of the kings and queens of the world who came to attend the opening of O-G .... HAHAHAHAHA FUCK YEAH !!! !!! From my little point of view It's beautiful, fucking great ! It reminds to the world that Paris is not only the city of luxury and Amélie Poulain, but also the city of Revolutions ... OH OUI !! ^^
Another clarification: the singer clearly embodies Marianne, who is the emblem not of the Revolution but of the Republic.

The castle they playing on is called " La conciergerie " it used to be part of the royal palace, then during the revolution it became a jail and Marie Antoinette was one of the prisoners inside the castle. Almost 3000 prisoners were in the conciergerie, their last place before getting beheaded.

I'm not a fan of Metal... but this scene at the "conciergerie" building was insane and so justified, for the Freedom/Liberty show. Metal is exactly the contemporary music for the Revolution. I couldn't believe while seeing it, that they had dared doing this. This Olympics opening (and other scene, too) were completely crazy, inclusive, spectacular, impertinent as the French can be, when they are free to create a show. I'm so proud of what have been done, even if there's always peoples screaming about that.

I think the word 'EPIC' has been redefined. For me, there's nothing more epic that I've seen than the Olympic torch carrier overlooking the Seine and the castle. The lighting, the music....everything perfection man! Everything!

The headless woman was Marie Antoinette, she was the Queen of France, imprisoned, tried for treason and later beheaded for her crimes and the reason for the French Revolution.
The location Gojira chose was the prison where Marie Antoinette was found guilty of Treason. Ah, Ca Ira translates to “It’ll be alright” or some like that and it was a French Revolution song. Gojira chose this song and location to show the bloody history of France.
I think they did a masterful job of blending history and Opera with Heavy Metal. Everything about this performance was brilliant.

As a french metal head and history nerd this show made me feel like life isnt that bad after all. Its a W on every level, peoples hated it or loved it but no one stayed unshooked. On every video there somenone to explain every détails and meanings a non french missed during the live. Its one step closer to get metal more mainstream and tolerated as any genra by the average public, taboos just needs to be broken and we might just have witnessed the moment having heavy metal normalised enough to be aired in prime time. That a cool thing despite what some grumpy gatekeepers may say

This castle, called "La Conciergerie" is a medieval castle in the center of Paris. It’s a museum today, but during the french revolution it was a prison.
This is exactly the place where queen Marie-Antoinette and thousands of aristocrats were imprisoned, before going to the guillotine.

Though Gojira in general is a bit heavy (vocal wise) for me, I agree that this was an epically grand moment for all metalheads- regardless of what style of metal is your favorite. This song with the mix of opera and choir vocals is definitely up my alley, however.

I'm so late to the party. For me, gojira is one of the technically best bands of the last few years and I only heard today that they played at Olympia. really big performance, the band spreads on the balconies, the fire. Oh boy you really feel like eating the elite!

Their technical skill is easily surpassed by 99% of Death or Progressive Metal bands. The majority of their riffs are mid-tempo 1/2 note chugs on the low D string, interspersed with pickscrapes and pinch harmonics.

Metal definitely wasn't dying the world was just trying to pretend that we don't exist anymore. I personally think this is awesome. Gojira was already a large venue band so no harm done. My only thing is that I'd like for metal concerts to remain affordable so we're good here.
I agree, I feel like this whole world is becoming expensive. To attend a concert is like paying a third of your rent or mortgage. I hope one day the world in general becomes affordable.
