    Hello Freya, I listened to your video and I have a few things to say if I may.
    To my opinion, this information that your give on support is not going to help beginners in singing. If you tell a beginner to hold his posture straight - all what can happen, he is just going to be more tense. This super straight posture actually isn't as important as everybody say . It isn't essential for finding the support.When you are an experienced singer , when your throat is properly taught to stay relaxed what ever you do , then of course you can be as straight as you want, but in the beginning it only will add more tension.
    The same story with opening the ribs, I cannot tell you how much problems this " open ribs" thing caused me, and how much it slowed down my progress.
    First of all people have very different ribs, of different size.while someone has big rib cage, others have small . Small rib cage doesn't open naturally very much, specially at first when you never sang properly . and when you force it you only get more tense. I think this has to be explained very well when you do this sort of videos and you give this kind of advises, because it can cause lots of misunderstanding.
    Exactly the same goes for lots of air. You say the more the better , but for the beginner it is a bad advice . You have to really be good at condensing your air in your body for you to benefit from a big inhale. Without it , big inhale makes no sense. If the beginner singer takes lots of hair he simply cannot sing, he cannot support that air at all. Then he naturally tighten his throat to hold the air, or he or she simply let it go and sound breathy and therefore irritate the larynx whith this big airflow.
    The most important thing for the beginners it's to learn to relax the throat. The support comes much more natural after it

    Thanks Freya. This is very relevant to me as I feel I'm struggling so much with breathing. I overthink the process and it's not good as then I bog down. It's interesting to hear about the contrasting theories and your take on it.

    I breathed a sort of slow, calm sigh of happiness when I heard you say you also do jazz and rock. Those areas are where I feel like I’m better in. I think I was always a jazz/rock/pop kind of guy when it came to my musical tastes, though I also enjoy country music, some heavy metal songs, and occasionally, hip hop and/or rap as long as it’s either hilarious to listen to or the background beat is actually worth jamming out to. (but we can all agree that most modern rap sucks, especially artists like Nicki Minaj. Like seriously Nicki, could you at least write ONE song that isn’t just you rambling about your…uh…physical attributes for 30 seconds straight?) I’m currently into Billie Eilish and singers who kind of copy her style, and also Aurora because the vibes she gives off are a lot like what I feel that my aesthetic is. (I’m an animal lover and am obsessed with the natural world including Nordic tundra regions with snow and Northern Lights and all that.). Since December is coming to a close even though I’m still in the holiday spirit, I’ve lately found myself listening to, singing along with, and playing Christmas music often. By the way, I like how you’re going over the support stuff a little more clearly in this video! I just finished watching one of your other videos and now I’m still trying to hiss for an extremely long time without running out of breath too soon! 😂 This one really made me understand somewhat more what actually goes into it.

    My problem is with the rhythm of my breath; when to inhale when to exhale. I sing through a line with pretty good support and Im left with a bit more breath I can't decide if I should take another breath or just go for the next line. Also the way I take in my next breath is by temporarily releasing my abdomen a little while keeping everything else intact to allow air to come in, then i start to use the abs again. Is this correct?
    Also this upload is timed pretty flawlessly. I've been wondering about this recently thank!

    Hi Freya /everyone, do you need just enough support to not let the air "drop out". For example if you don't try to support at all on a phrase, the air will rush out, is it just enough support presence to stop that from happening? This is my understanding.

    • @monsterswolr

      try breathing as if you were about to swim and taking a bigger breath in order to make sure you don't run out of breath underwater. it is that exact sensation.

      Thanks again. I tend to dwell WAY too much on a specific concept/instruction and all I end up doing is condition myself to feel like I’m probably just not meant or “made” to do some things. Ever tried to learn how to whistle by cupping your hands? It took me years to master that! And the water droplet sound where you flick your cheek and push out a little puff of air with your tongue and it literally sounds EXACTLY like water dripping? I would kinda get all mad at myself for not being able to do either, and then years later I got them both down after watching a few tutorials on TikTok and CZcams.

    Freyaaaaaaaa, I'm leaving comments all over the place, hahaha, but I've been asking other vocal coaches (via youtube) about the same thing:
    I never feel 100% "relaxed" when it comes to breathing. Be it a lot of air, a little, nose or mouth, feeling the ribcage expanding more to the sides, or more focused on the lower belly area, every way that I try, there is always this lingering tightness in my chest area especially (focused on the sternum, I think), which inevitably extends to the shoulders, even if my posture is correct (according to videos and teachers, etc etc). Any thoughts?? drives me crazy, aaaargh! Thank you 🍀

    • @aldebaran853
      @aldebaran853 Před 4 lety

      Is it on your sternum area? Or is it just right below your throat and neck area but above your chest area? If that's the case that means your body is tense, especially if you feel your shoulder is tensing all the time. Your shoulder should be relaxed all the time. No matter what kinda singing that you do (belting, riffing, etc.) A lot of factors could play into why you feel tense in that area. From shallow breathing aka chest breathing, bad posture, to collapsing the sternum.
